I imagine in iOS 7 we'll see some of Ive's influence, but it won't be until iOS 8 that it'll be fully realized. I'm super excited.

Now that Scott has been ousted, kudos are in order to the original poster. Oh wait, that was little old me! So much for all the apologetics of the quislings. :p

Yep, looks like you correctly read the handwriting on the wall!

The clues did seem to be there. I get the feeling that when Jobs died, Forestall just got way too big for his britches. Hubris got the better of him, and his arrogance hindered innovation and effort on his part. I pictured him basically getting lazy and bossing people around, thinking that he couldn't fail, even if he didn't do anything that was up to Apple's normal standards. Glad Cook dealt with it decisively.

It seems to me that the two biggest beneficiaries of the Steve Jobs mojo were Forestall and Ives. Forestall got all that was bad about Jobs (immaturity, temper, arrogance, lack of respect for others, hubris, etc...) without any of the good. Ives got all that was good about Jobs (vision, design genius, prescience, intuition, etc...) without all of the bad. Cook is the CEO Apple needs, with maturity (finally!), an even-keeled demeanor, keen business sense and strong ability to lead and manage. He knows he's a business/numbers man and not a product person, and so he wisely and humbly has placed the product innovation and direction in the hands of Ives, Mansfield, Federigni and Cue. With that team and Cook at the helm, I see good days ahead for Apple.
