Nope, moderation is the key.

Sometimes I feel like I check here too often, but its a matter of 2 minutes checking subforums or the marketplace.

However that is how I scored a $350 macbook pro.

:p Has his rep preceded him even here, outside of PRSI? Or are you a PRSI lurker who is joining his ever-widening group of "fans"?
I lurk (40 something posts and a month to go) and if you mean "fans" as in "your ignorance makes me want to rip my face off and force-feed it to you" then yes.

Right now, I'm somewhere where I live and work with the same group of people - it can be tiring spending work time and free time together, so I will spend a lot of time here as my way to "get out," especially since I cannot physically go anywhere.

When is your "shift" at the space station over? I'm sure you'll be glad to get your feet back on solid ground. Although, I bet it's fun working on a computer in zero gravity. :D

While I kind of agree that it can be sad for two people to meet online because they cannot meet people irl (I can't believe I just typed that) it does seem like they're very happy and could have met people in real life.

I know a lot of couples who have met online and even ended up getting married. I don't see anything sad about it. Online dating is a brilliant idea - it allows you to quickly and easily narrow your choices to people who are much better matches than you'd get if you just went by "hey that girl is cute."

(full disclosure: I have a long term girlfriend and we did not meet online, but if I were looking, I'd try out online dating)

I think the premise of this thread is incredibly narrow minded.

First, you assume people here are trading in in-person interactions for online interactions. Maybe and maybe not. Maybe people are trading in TV or video games.

Second, why is online interaction so worthless? I originally joined this site in 2003 to talk about the Iraq war, a topic I'd consider worthy of thought and discussion.

Third, if people enjoy posting in online forums, why is that a "vice?" Is it a vice to watch TV? Is anything except in-person interaction with other people a vice?

I have friends, family, and a girlfriend. I work out every day and work far more hours than I'd like. And I like macrumors as a way to relax, read about new things, and just see what the tech news is (I like technology - so sue me). I don't at all understand the mindset that a harmless, relaxing, enjoyable activity is a "vice." Sure you can take it to an extreme where it starts to interfere with other things in your life, but that's true of anything.

And if the concern is how other people see you because of the number next to your name... wow.

Not a space station, but I am in the middle of nowhere. I can see desert for miles in every direction outside these walls, and I have to carry my M4 everywhere.

People who came of age in 1920, where thinking that people who watched television would rot their brains and were substituting passive entertainment for active participation in social life.

Comparing yourself with the norms of others in any respect is usually fruitless.

No. Some people here are pretty nice and funny. Sometimes, they also make my day before I go to work. :)

The average American watches six complete days of television a month. That's sad. The average MMO player plays for nearly 4 complete days a month. That's sad. Participating in an online forum seems to rank a little differently.

I don't feel I spend much time one here but now I'm beginning to wonder. Maybe I'm actually just as sad and lonely as the rest of you.

I don't feel sad or lonely; I've posted on average 0.50 posts a day for the last five years so I don't exactly spend all my time on here but it's fun and I enjoy reading the posts.

I have a busy life and lots of friends. No problem!
