I am also not a fan of some of the Best Buy associates, as I am a educated individual and customer, and know what I am doing and buying before I walk into the store. I avoid the misinformed blue shirts like the plague. I was however very surprised to see the Apple associate in Best Buy near me to be very knowledgeable, courteous and friendly. It felt like a cordoned off area of bliss within the madness of Best Buy. It is very apparent that the Apple Store employees are well trained and held to a different standard than the regular blue shirts.

FLyers0815 which one do you regular? You are in my neck of the woods. You either come to mine, DanoftheDeads or one of the guys in our region.

Allot of retail problems comes down to pay rate. In general those who do know allot about a specific field have a tendency to apply that knowledge towards better jobs. Don't expect allot from those making $8/hr with no commision. As far as the warranties, credit card, etc.. offers that they ask, it is part of their job to do so. Really all you have to do is say "no" if you don't want it. Not exactly a hard thing to do. I find there are allot of people who are just afraid that they are going to get "sold" something they don't want and think these kids are out to screw them. Honestly do you get upset when you go to McDonalds and they ask "Will you like fries with that?"

You misunderstand. It's not the question, that's fine. It's the sale, when I've already politely said no. One guy tried to convince me that the camera I was about to buy needed the Best Buy warranty because it had a zoom lens and they "break a lot." I don't mind the haplessness of under-trained kids, what I mind is being sold to by someone who doesn't know the difference between a firewire cable and a USB cable and attempt to convince me that I don't need a firewire cable because "USB is better."

I've also had to fix things borked by the Geek Squad, the stereo install guys, I've heard a litany of bad-advice, and Best Buy has sold people things they truly didn't need.

Again, I'm not hammering on you or your store, just my general experience which has been sorely lacking. And, trust me, I'm an easy-going guy and I never lose my patience, but when asked for advice about where to go for electronics and assistance, Best Buy is almost at the bottom of the list.

Man if you have gone through that much why do you bother anymore or talk to the manager there. I wouldnt put up with that kind of S$#@! Hell if I heard one of my customers had that many things go wrong I would ask to be transfered out. I mean here and there stuff going wrong is well .. thats retail (no ones perfect). When this stuff happens make sure you talk to their managers or go online to their complaint form. I am very close to the management in my store and when there is a complaint I see them perosnally take care of them all. So yes each store does listen. It doesnt head to some corporate black hole. The place will never be perfect but they are pretty good. This coming from me who used to be managemet for them many a year ago for alsmot 6 years and was glad I escaped. Now much better training, managers dont put up with slackers much anymore, very very low pressure to sell attachments now. Someone says no and thats it (this surprised me the most). Of course like DanoftheDead mentioned ... 8 dollars an hour isnt gonna bring in Apple or even Dell techs to sell them. :D

If you where in Deptford that would have been me :)

Havent been to the Deptford store yet (Went to the CC there and was disgusted... I bought a laser printer for in-store pickup and received the email conf.... only to drive there and find it was "sold" to someone else) .. But i very often go to the Oxford Valley BB, which is a stones throw from me.... The NE Philadelphia BB is closer to me, but that place is unpleasant to patronize :) ... I will gladly drive the extra few minutes to Oxford Valley.

Im going to have to venture to Deptford now :)

I agree. As much as I enjoy Best Buy for being convenient some of their reps are very annoying. I understand the reps are required to offer additional services during purchases, but they can get pushy. All they need to do is ask ONCE and if the customer says "No" then that's it. I've experienced several times when the rep just did not shut their mouth. This is why whenever I'm in there I only make eye contact to say hello and that's it. People have to understand some of those purchases are already $$$ as it is and people don't need someone trying to increase the $$$.

Next time your in Oxford Valley store let me know who you are. Thats me there. Dont go to Deptford .. its like the ghetto of South Jersey..(ya know besides Camden). :D

Haha wow small world... Well the Apple section is a joy up there... and the store is actually bearable.... I was up there a few weeks ago and the MBP that is hooked up to the ACD was frozen... couldnt stand seeing it like that so I rebooted it.. My g/f thought i was mental for caring..... Anyway, Is the NE Philadelphia BB getting the Apple store anytime?... I couldn't see it going there and doing too well.

By the way, I always wondered ... are there any differences in the BB Apple shops? the only one ive seen is Oxford... is Deptford any different in size or product offered?

Mostly, I go to other places where people are paid fairly well and really understand what they're talking about, but Best Buy is often convenient and sometimes cheaper. Of course, the Circuit City seems to hire the clowns that Best Buy fired for incompetence, and other places—like Sears (shudder)—seem surprised that they sell electronics.

The firewire debacle was kind of funny. The Best Buy was really close, so I decided to go there while helping a friend set-up a new iMac and so I thought I would use Migration Assistant, but I didn't bring a firewire cable with me. No big deal, I thought, we'll just go to Best Buy, snag a cable and stare at the Plasmas for a few minutes.
So, I wander into the cable aisle, scan around for a few minutes, and realize that the firewire cable spaces are empty. So, I find a blue-shirt, and tell him I need a firewire cable, do they have any somewhere else, or maybe a few in the back. He responds by going into the aisle and looking for the cable—which is fine, I might have missed it—and hands me a USB cable. No, I say, I need a firewire cable. Oh, they're the same, he says. No, I say, the ends are different. Oh, he says, but they work the same.
At this point I want to say something acerbic about a square peg in a round hole, but I calmly say, but the ends are different and I just need a firewire cable, can you look in the back and see if there's a box back there? If not, no worries, I'll go somewhere else.
But, they're exactly the same.
No. They're not. The USB cable's end is flat, the firewire is different.
Oh, he says, then we don't have any.

I hate to say it, but I've never bothered talking to one of the managers because I assumed it would go into a black-hole.

I agree that these sales reps should not be pushy once being turned down on their additional services. However if you've ever worked at B BUY or a similar retail environment, you'll realize your performance is based on your attach rate of such services. Usually if you don't reach a certain attach rate, you are terminated. Although these people don't work on commission, their sales and attach rate are monitored SO closely they might as well be working on commission.

Yeah was having a problem with the demo software for a couple days where it would freeze it up here and there. Just had to eventually re install and r freeze it. Good as gold now. I am a little OCD at times so if anything is ever out of place it wont be for very long at all. If it ever is out of place for long ... means I am on vacation. :D

Deffinitely let me know who you are when you are in next.
