Never happened to me.

Besides, assume Apple don't make it such an unweildly system. Surely then you'd have no problem with anti-piracy methods such as registration keys.

It's only ever happened to me on retail copies, not the OEM licenses. But it's happened often enough to be annoying.
I've had it happen on brand new Dell machines with replaced hard drives. I had to fire up the phone and call India to get Windows activated.

It's nice to believe that Apple trusts users enough not to use copy protection. Fair enough. But they do use very intense protection for their professional applications. Logic Pro is the most extreme example because it uses a hardware key that must be plugged into your computer while you use the software.
Yeah, luckily for a lab you can use a floating license on a lot of OS X software. Still, I wonder how we push iLife out so easily. It's on our default installation.

apple generally doesn't attract the n00b haxor warez users and if it does it converts them to goodness. most of the time, hey don't you look at me...

I feel compelled to buy apple software and when I was looking for perfectly legal software on [website name removed]... i was shocked when i saw 10.4 tiger downloads. The thought never even crossed my mind before that.

Having to pay to save QT downloads is not good.

Apple QT should offer for free everything that WMP has for free - which is why i searched for a Key for QT 7 and feel no guilt in using it.

I'm not saying you're right to have done that, especially since you can download a (legal) app to do this for free, but I agree with this point. Apple makes a big deal about the fact that everything is bundled into the operating system and that computers even come with iLife. Apple would not take such a huge financial bath to make QT Pro a free feature on OS X distributions (only) of QT... and it would be good for the bragging score card.

What free app is that? I would love to use it because I really don't like all the grayed out Pro features. I did notice that when using Flip For Mac I was able to download .wmv streaming files. The the fact that full screen is reserved only for pro that really made me upset.

Mmm, it's not the très, très best, but there's an app called curl, and it has some front ends like iCurl... and there are some other tricks that you can see here.

There might be something better than iCurl... I've never really wanted this and so I don't know that much about it. But hope it helps!

And is there a PC version of this app?

Not being able to save a copy of a trailer that i have downloaded has bugged me for a long time, Qt 6 did it, and i also limewired a key for that.

I have a different stance - when leopard comes out I intend to buy a single user lisence and install it on the 4 macs in the house. Does this make me a bad person? Or does the inability to spell make me a worse person?

Nothing wrong with that in my book. I'd probably do the same. After all, you bought it. And you bought the hardware. And you help promote Macs to the world by being an active member of Macroumors.
I'd probably do the same.

I don't owe Apple a thing. If I buy their hardware, I deserve free upgrades of their OS.

EOT

you get all the upgrades for free through the update-thingie, but with leopard it's a new os, not just an update....!

I'm most likely to buy leopard when it comes out, though I'm going to wait just a sec to see what it's like!

I don't look down on softeware pirates, but I would never pirate something which I think is great and use all the time! After switching to mac I even found soo much great shareware - I never used that on PC, and I still find a lot of good freeware as well...
So I have no worries having to pay for my OS, especially when it is as good as OSX!! I dread the day Apple sees OSX as bad bussiness, starts to neglect it, and it turns into a easy breach just like winblows!

Also I have this weird fetish - I just have to have the original "cover", just like music I just gotta have the cover - that's why I never really liked buying mp3s but love CDs...

It's still OS X and I shouldn't have to have purchase it if I bought the hardware. If I want to take advantage of other software updates, I have to ugrade to 10.[whatever] so I can use their updates. For example, if I want to use a new iTunes controller and it's only compatible with 10.3.9 or above, I am screwed if I have 10.2 In that case, my machine will be obsolete even though the hardware is working perfectly.

If I buy a car, I shouldn't have to keep buying updates so it keeps running. If I do the proper maintenance, it should last me awhile. The same applies to my Mac.

It's not like, if you do the proper maintenance, your operating system is going to die on you.

Besides, if you want the nifty iPod dock in next year's model of the car you bought, you've got to get the new car.

Yeah, but if you want to plugin your iPod, you might have to upgrade the stereo system. :) You Mac won't break if you don't pay for system upgrades, but don't expect to get any new features for free (I do wish Apple offered upgrade pricing for OS X though).

No,
$1.29 for the Audio out cable
Installed it myself
iPod in the car.
Voila

I am wondering if Leopard will be sold for little money for MBP c2s'. Im thinking of that, because Leopard will be released in Q1 2007. Thats 4 month later since I bought my first apple...

So maybe ill be me a mini, and just share the os... maybe. A lil luck, and I dont need to save the 70 bucks (edu) and will buy it. Depends if ill have a good job, or not. sigh.

Leopard is NOT a whole new OS. It has additional features (nice ones!). But the core remains nearly the same. Do you think, they wd. develop a complete new system, although their existing one is absolut nice?! Never ever.

cheers

Does it make you a bad person? I dunno, I don't know you personally :p

BUT it does still make it illegal according to the EULA. You have 4 Macs, why not just pay an extra $70 for the Family Pack and do it legally. Surely if you have 4 computers you can afford an extra $70.

There a lot better things to complain about. Your computer will be fine running what it came with for a long, long time.

The fact that Apple does all the R&D and design to produce a significant new version of its operating system every 1.5 to 2 years deserves the price they ask for it, in my opinion. If you are a student it's even half-off.

I would't mind some activation requirement during the OS X install....
But it wont matter, people still find ways to hack it.....

And for those people who use pirated copies of Quicktime Pro, you're a bunch of losers..... what's 50 bucks a year ??? Huh?

I like Apple too much to be using pirated Apple software....

I can't wait to buy Leopard. I actually like going to the Apple store and getting a shiny box with OS X install dvds.

Everything Windows Media Player offers, then Quicktime should offer too.

WMP lets you svae a copy of a movie clip you can download, then Quicktime should too.

If WMP has a free packet of Cheese and Onion crips (hhmm tasty) then god-dammit!, Apple better give me a free coupon for a packet too!

;)

Yeah! Adobe and Microsoft deserve to be stolen from :D muahahahah

I would pirate winblows software. It sucks, and I have no respect for their crappy OS.

Apple's software on the other hand is cheaper, and 1000000000000000000000000000000 times better;) So I would never pirate it;)

I must agree fully. Don't think ive bought any software for windows, be it Windows its self or Photoshop

It's all good tho, Microsoft have enough money.

Can anyone say 'double-standards'?

If you believe in the law, then you have to accept it through black and white and make no exceptions. Otherwise it just descends into a subjective free for all.

Personally, if there options there not to pay for it I'll most likely take it for nothing, whether it be Apple or Microsoft. As an individual living in a highly individualistic society, it's my god given right to do what the hell I want...

Etc.

People sure have a habit of deluding themselves. Just admit you're doing something illegal and then deal with it any way you want (ignore it, buy the software you're using, whatever...).

I like Apple to much to pirate their software. In fact, I don't have any pirated software here, why would you when it's so much bang for the buck anyway?
