No, it doesn't. I called 1-800-MY-IPHONE and purchased it right over the phone. Got a confirmation email the next day.

From an Apple email -

"After that date, if you would still like to purchase AppleCare+ within the first thirty days of receiving your iPhone, you can call AppleCare at 800-MY-IPHONE or visit an Apple Retail Store."

I'll have to try this when my phone comes on Monday.

Just this morning, I added AppleCare+ to my launch-day iPhone 5, over the phone, via the AppleCare toll-free number (1-800-275-2273). Was done and paid for in under 15 mins. I didn't have to turn in proof of purchase, or take my phone anywhere for any type of inspection, they just added it and charged me. Nice and quick.

Apple Care is pointless.

A replacement phone from Apple if you utterly destroy yours costs you $229.

Apple care costs you $149. You save $80 if you believe you're going to break it once. If you are a clumsy buffoon then yes, saving $310 by buying Apple care for 2x accidents is the only time it's worth it.

Do you have young children? There might actually be people who might benefit from AppleCare. Obviously it isn't for everyone.

Funny when I purchased iPhone 5 the person that sold it to me said I have to bring in my device to the Apple store within 30 days of purchase in order to buy Apple care. I'm sure he knew this could all be done online or through the phone. SMH

It's not pointless, because it adds a second year of warranty. I just bought a used 4S off Craigslist with AC+. It was in very good shape, but the silent switch wasn't smooth so I took it to the Apple store. They exchanged it on the spot. The original warranty had already run out. I still have the two accidental replacements on it. If anything it adds a lot of resale value.

I can probably sell this phone on Ebay as new or refurbished (looks and feels good as new to me) and double what I paid for it now ;)

That switch could also have been repaired for very little.

Yes, it helps with resale for the original owner, but you also paid $100 for it, so that should be obvious.

The point is that it costs the owner $150 to repair the phone due to an accident once, as opposed to $229. Yes if you break it more than once, it more than pays for itself, but then only the buyers who tend to do such things to their phones will benefit from it.

Normal people tend to be out $99 for no benefit.

AppleCare+ requires you to go into the store.

So I have to travel 10+ hours to the nearest Apple store to get AC+? Lame.

Add me to the list of people that got Apple Care+ over the phone.

I did my phone early Tuesday morning at work and it took only 5 minutes; all they needed was my serial number. I didn't have my wife's at the time, so I told them I'd just call back later when I got it from her. Called back later that evening and same thing -- they added it to hers with no questions other than her serial number... and billing information, of course.

AppleCare+ via phone

I am in FL and have an Apple Store 16 miles away. I just called over the land line and they added the warranty for me too on the phone. Just had to give them the Serial number of the phone.

Warranty is irrelevant, Apple replaces all iPhones broken damaged or that are not fixable for a flat $229. Whether its 1 month old or 3 years old.

You people that say that it is pointless are only using the accidental damage in your examples. As others have already pointed out, in addition to that coverage, it also extends the factory warranty an extra year. When your phone goes sour after you have owned it 20 months, you get anew one for free... not $229 as someone without AC+ would have to spend.

My wife and I have owned a total of 6 iPhones (not including our current iP5s) and we have had countles issues that required the use of the factory warranty... and a lot of those werre after the original 365 day warranty. Luckly, we alway spent the extra $69 to get Apple Care. I really like the AC+ because I can now keep my phone naked without the stress of worrying about breaking it.

In the end, it is just like any other insurance. You take a chance whether you buy it or not. Everyone's mileage may vary and you must decide for yourself which side of the risk you want to take.

Ah- no it does not. I never stepped foot in to a store and have all of my phones covered. I did not purchase when I ordered the phones. You have some bad information.

yikes...people are seriously confused about applecare and applecare+

you have just been lucky, and people should not expect this Unless you live more than 50+ miles away from a store or add it before you get the phone they want you to come into store. YOU ARE GIVING BAD INFO.

Having it repaired is not the same as receiving a new or refurbished phone from Apple.

The spread between a used iPhone that's not in great condition vs a new/refurb sample is easily $100. It provides the new owner a great peace of mind having AC+ when you resell. I'll gladly pay a premium for one (I tried to bid on Ebay, was outbid even at >$400). I lucked out on the 4S I just bought off Craigslist, the guy sold it to me under what some beatup ones go for on Ebay.

If you don't ever break your gadgets (such as myself, knock on wood), then the benefit from the $99 spent on AC+ is for the peace of mind and resale value; save the money you otherwise would have spent on a case and use it naked, the way it's meant to be used.

I am contemplating whether to keep the 5 I bought last week. If I do I will be adding AC+ to it and use it without a case.

i plan on taking my iphone 5 into the apple store this weekend and adding applecare+ before its too late (10/21). ive been rocking it naked and only have one minor drop. nothing bad at all just a small nick on the side of the phone towards the bottom. will this prevent me from being able to add the insurance? ive heard they inspect the phone beforehand and i dont want them to freak out over this small nick and not let me add applecare.

Please STOP using the word rocking as a verb. It's ridiculous.

Call Apple and they will tell you what to do.

Try ordering it on the phone by calling apple I bought mine about a week after I got my 5 and they added it to my acct over the phone without questions. I've since got my 5 replaced for a battery issue that. New one with no dents on the silver bezel.

I read on the website and it says you have to take it in, but I've also asked about apple care plus over the phone and added it without wantin me to go to a store to have I checked out. Maybe it's a extra measure if they smell something fishy about a call for them to cover themselves.

What? No ******? This is news to me.... I figured after a year they wouldn't fix it and id be stuck having to buy a new one. This is interesting...

AppleCare+ IS worth it. Not only are accidents covered (twice) but other things that have nothing to do with physical damage would be covered free of charge.

For instance, my iPhone 4 keep staying in dock mode and wouldn't play any sounds through the phone's speakers. BUT because I didn't have AppleCare and I had it for more than a year, I was stuck. Apple couldn't figure out what was wrong with it and they wouldn't replace it. Had to either use my upgrade to buy a new 4S (at $199) or pay over $200 for a refurb 4....

My wife accidently dropped her 5 about 10 days after we got them, shattered the front screen. She was devastated (she's never broken anything expensive before lol). So we go into Apple and they give us the $229 replacement spiel and try and sell us AppleCare+ on top of it. I told them I would love to, but the $229 is expensive enough and we can really only afford the replacement (I had ordered her an OtterBox right after it happened). They ended up giving her free AppleCare+.

Moral of the story - Apple's customer service is top notch, second-to-none IMO. If they sell something that covers your expensive (and oftentimes personal) piece of technology, you should buy it. I'm debating whether or not to get it too - dropped my 5 on the tile in my new purchased house (which is why money is a little tight). Not even a scratch on it - but made me nervous as hell regardless!

Moral of this long novel - buy it and you won't regret it! Plus they reward you at the end of the term if you don't end up using the accidental damage claims. Can't remember how though.

Except using your phone naked will cause the 5 to look worn in no time. So you use your insurance to get a new one. $150 for the luxury of using your phone naked for a while? Sure, I guess this makes sense for some customers.

$10 case on mine and buying the 5S on launch day instead.

Applecare+ is $99. There's a $49 free for replacements due to accidental damage. Applecare+ becomes sufficient if you're someone prone to break their phone at least twice. On the first replacement, you'll save $80 but if you break it again, you'll be saving $180.

Whatever. Drop it already.
