I think apple may be waiting to see how well the nexus 7 and new kindle fire sell before jumping into the iPad mini... I would guess that if they do release it, it won't be until next march at the next iPad event. The rumored October event I would guess is going to be all about new macs.

I just posted this in response to a CNet writer's prediction on the iPad Mini price-point.
He said....
"consequently, it'll cost more than the iPod Touch. How can it not?"

I have commented extensively on what the outer dimensions of the iPad Mini ought to be. With respect to what a 7" screen tablet ought to cost, I respectfully believe that you are mistaken in feeling that it's a relative price point issue. IN otherwords, that the ipad mini even has to be in between existing products.
Each of Apple's 'touchscreen' products targets a different set of activities and demographics. This makes price, irrelevant within the Apple domain.
As another Cnet'r astutely pointed out, the demographics for each product are different so price is less of a factor for example. than feature set. Also , there's a critical perceptual phenomenon that impacts panel choice/price- perceived resolution is dependent on viewing distance. Thus a non-Retina display occupying 1280X800 at 13" inches from the average nose, will look about as good as a retina display at 6" from the same nose. Thus, the ipad Mini needn't be a retina if it has other salient features desired by it's specific customer demographic.
Now, if Apple should have the good sense to include a value added feature set such as removable media, HDMI I/O port, two cameras, then the appropriate demographic will be willing to pay the premium.Again, it's not a comparison to other Apple products.
I've been holding off on a Tablet since the first iPad came out.
And now you know why ;)

What do people really want?
a cheaper ipad or a smaller one?

If size matters:

Why not just price the iPad mini same as the iPad?
Why does the cost have to be any different?
Is there a law or rule that just because it's smaller it should cost less?
What if the original size was closer to 8 inches?
I bet Apple would still charge what they charged for the 10.

There are many smaller tablets out there for what a smaller tablet needs to do.
The Samsung line is very nice and the Nook Tablet is an overlooked gem- root to full Android and with external storage under $200.

Now, if Apple should have the good sense to include a value added feature set such as removable media, HDMI I/O port, two cameras,

Whahaha, that will never happen. :p If you want any of that, get an Android tablet instead.

Oh, and you've forgotten about the user replaceable battery.

Cheaper is a huge factor. $499 really is a luxury item for many people, while $200-$300 is much easier to justify. And of course there is the education market, where price is really what matters.

I really hope they make an iPad mini. I really want a smaller tablet. I played with the kindle fire hd and while really nice and impressive...it is too locked down and I don't want to bother with having to root it to customize it. (not really a fan of the lack of privacy with the carousel)

I looked at the Nexus 7 and think it is really nice but my amazon prime stuff won't work with it unless...surprise surprise...I "hack" it to get the amazon apps on it.

Now that amazon released the app for video on the iPad I want an iPad mini even more. If there is no iPad mini..I will probably ge a kindle fire because I get all my content from amazon anyway.

No way Apple sells it that low.
IMO- Apple will produce one (there are reports from China that it is already in production)
I guess folks are going to simply make a choice on size.
Lose the ipad 2 and:

itouch- $299
mini pad $399
full size- $499

???

After seeing the updates to the iPod touches, I started wondering this too. The 4" screen of either the touch of the iPhone 5 coupled with the regular iPad would be a nice combination which would handle the majority of tasks one would need to do. But then at the same time I remembered all the leaks we've been seeing lately have been dead on, so maybe the iPad mini ones are true too. It's not like Apple doesn't have the money to spare to make it and find out if it'll be a success.

Firstly, the new pricing on the iPad and touch lines:

iPad 3 = $499
iPad 2 = $399
New iPod Touch = $299
Old iPod Touch = $199

As you can see, iPad mini doesn't fit in anywhere.

Secondly, Apple have increased the display size of the new iPhone. And they are hoping iPhone 5 + 10" iPad combo will become the most popular choice, that will stop people buying the 7" tablets.

Weren't the rumours saying the iPad mini would basically be a smaller iPad 2? If that's the case, then the iPad could be discontinued and the iPad mini would take that empty price slot. Or the iPad mini could take a price point in between (my guess would be $349).

I wasn't expecting the new Touch to be such a good update.

Completely agreed. I was expecting a very minor update for the iPod touch, but Apple did more than I was expecting (especially with regards to the cameras).

Wherever the iPad Mini fits into the price hierarchy, for Apple it will be like printing money. I want one, you want one and they could not make enough of the things in the first generation.

I hope that it compares favourably to the new iPod Touch but even if it does not, that will not stop me or anyone else from buying it.

Apple simply have to make the iPad Mini, and make it affordable/competitively priced.

I love the iPad but it is too big to take out and about for me. As a man, I don't have a handbag/manbag and there are times I'd love to take the iPad but can't be bothered to carry it everywhere. A portable iPad Mini/Air with the rumoured specs would change all that.

A Mini would make much more sense for many people. Still love the iPad, but there is no denying that Amazon and Google are proving the 7" tablet is a real thing now.

There have been so few part leaks that I'm not holding my breath, and in that case, I could just pony up for a Kindle Fire HD. It's only £159 which is affordable, and if that iPad Mini was £300 I just wouldn't bother. It needs to be sub-£250.

If the iPad mini is 7" and has the same number of pixels as iPad 1/2, then that's a Retina display.

It could well come in at $399 and replace the iPad 2

Unfortunately, that's not the case.
The current Retina iPad has a 264 ppi @2048x1535 in a 9.7 inch screen.
Assuming that the iPad mini will have a 7.85 inch screen, and keep the original iPad resolution of 1024x758, then it will only have 163 ppi. (Even with a 7 inch screen, the pixel density will still be too low: 182 ppi).

The Retina MBP has 220 ppi and it's obviously being viewed further from the eye than an iPad.

The only way to have it Retina (and I hope that will be the case) is if Apple pushes up the resolution to something between 1024 and 2048.

I'm an Amazon Prime subscriber & their video app for iPad is fabulous! Amazon is made a brilliant move with how they've released this app in my opinion.

I had an itouch & gave it away because I have a phone with more storage for my music & thought it foolish to carry 2 devices. Sorry but I see the itouch as a device primarily for people who can't have or don't want an iPhone, it's not a replacement for an iPad mini.

My main concern is that a 7-8" tablet is not suitable for everyday web surfing and emails, or even light content creation. The screen is way *too small* for viewing when it is placed on a table or on your lap. And when you are holding the device in both hands, it's impossible to type comfortably.

Whereas, the 7-8" tablet is perfect for content consumption. So let's see if Apple will use the October iTunes event to announce a new business model for the new iPad mini.

It could still be $299. Remember that the iPod Touch has a Retina Display. Likely the iPad Mini will not (it will have the same resolution as the original iPad). Also, the iPod Touch starts at 32GB, while the iPad Mini would likely start at 16GB.

yup, I can see apple doing this. the ipad mini res is 1024x768 versus ipod touch 1136x640, so the ipad mini could fill the void where people want bigger screen than the ipod touch but don't want to pay the base ipad price.

I agree / disagree. I don't think the iPod touch and iPad mini will be replacements for eachother...but...assuming that I did not have an iPhone and there was an iPad mini...I think that I would get an iPad mini and an iPod nano rather than an iPad mini and an iPod touch. Mainly because I am assuming I will be able to do everything with the mini that I can with the touch and the mini will fit in my purse.

But...I think the point of this thread is kind of that the new pricing structure of the iPod touch leaves little room for an iPad mini in the lineup unless they replace the iPad 2 with it.

Are you telling me carrying a display that is merely 2" larger is too "cumbersome"? Thats is just hard to believe.

Yes, for some people. A full-size iPad doesn't fit in my white coat when I see patients. An iPad mini would be perfect.

Ok thanks for that. I can't imagine them having a resolution which isn't a multiple of 1024x758, however, as it will complicate things for existing apps.

I recently won a Galaxy Nexus 7 tablet and I LOVE the form factor. An iPad at a similar size would be awesome.

There's 100% of a market for the mini... a screen around 7"-8" will spur a lot of portability solutions. Chics will have these in their purses, men will find it even easier to put in their briefcases(& it should be notably lighter)... also, the price point will make these things create a market within themselves. Apple, will eventually make the iPad higher end & bump up the price in years to come while the iPad Mini will be sold heavily mostly due to price point, and may indeed be left out of some features that the iPad will have. Though, I wouldn't doubt the iPad Mini will be the #1 selling tablet in years to come.

Just think about it... new iPhones in September, new iPad Minis in the fall, and then even the new iPads come out in the Spring. Apple wants you to "want/buy" everyone upon release, and they may get some of that 'fanboy' market without a doubt.

I also think new iMacs are coming out this fall due to the low stock with the new processors going through the pipeline now. I am waiting on that more than anything... if an iPad Mini comes out - definitely waiting for the 2nd gen as I do most Apple devices. The one thing I would have never guessed, just happened - The iPod Touch now has colors... I thought they would never do this, because Apple has/will never stock an item plain & simple(even though this is extremely hard/rare).

I do think some of these colored Touches will be left collecting dust on the shelves of many stores... and the iPad Mini will sell like no other tablet on launch/debut.

Apple will make a Mini, I mainly believe this, because of a price point that Apple can easily fit in. They will completely crush the tablet market, and no one will compete. They can outlast the competition in the tablet market just like they saturated the mp3 market. SJ did say they would never come out with a smaller iPad, but SJ has been known how to establish markets, and release the bigger one initially might have been best for the market he made indefinitely.

The Mini is coming...

To reiterate my key points:
1) Apple clearly has a form-factor gap with respect to the OUTER dimensions of their touch screens.
2) That gap ,must NOT be filled with a device any larger than the Nexus7 as I have discovered the Nexus 7, even with a skin or thin case, goes where no larger tablet can possibly go.
3) There is ALWAYS a customer base that is focused on specific feature parameters and they will not (like me) take out their wallets until the product they need surfaces.
4) Cost versus Price-Point. They are different customers. If a product does what I want, is the right size and I don't have to wait in line for months to get it... then I'm not price sensitive. Particularly if I think that it will result in time or money saved in the midterm.
5)The coolest ipad in the wrong size/weight is always too expensive for me!
So here's my message in a bottle to Apple....
WHAT WILL Apple DO IF Apple DOES NOT announce A 7" ipad mini in October and GOOGLE RELEASES A BETTER NEXUS 7 BEFORE THE HOLIDAYS? Answer- Apple will cry all over Cupertino!

Could an iPad Mini = iPhone HD ? Maybe something to compete with the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 ? A Phablet ? Subsidize with contract.
