I just posted this in response to a CNet writer's prediction on the iPad Mini price-point.
He said....
"consequently, it'll cost more than the iPod Touch. How can it not?"
I have commented extensively on what the outer dimensions of the iPad Mini ought to be. With respect to what a 7" screen tablet ought to cost, I respectfully believe that you are mistaken in feeling that it's a relative price point issue. IN otherwords, that the ipad mini even has to be in between existing products.
Each of Apple's 'touchscreen' products targets a different set of activities and demographics. This makes price, irrelevant within the Apple domain.
As another Cnet'r astutely pointed out, the demographics for each product are different so price is less of a factor for example. than feature set. Also , there's a critical perceptual phenomenon that impacts panel choice/price- perceived resolution is dependent on viewing distance. Thus a non-Retina display occupying 1280X800 at 13" inches from the average nose, will look about as good as a retina display at 6" from the same nose. Thus, the ipad Mini needn't be a retina if it has other salient features desired by it's specific customer demographic.
Now, if Apple should have the good sense to include a value added feature set such as removable media, HDMI I/O port, two cameras, then the appropriate demographic will be willing to pay the premium.Again, it's not a comparison to other Apple products.
I've been holding off on a Tablet since the first iPad came out.
And now you know why
