Basically the question is in the title y’all.

I would have created a poll but I’m using Tapatalk.

I’m on the fence whether this would sway me over the dark side but usually after  adopts something the whole tech world usually jumps on board or it blows up in the mainstream if it had already been done on Android.

I would just be leery of giving up my  watch and having to switch over to Android.

I also thought I would never say this but I did switch I would most likely get the Pixel 6

(Apple employees enter the thread...)

:D :)

Being an iPhone SE1 user and lover, I have the luxury of being on the sidelines of worrying about device upgrades for now... for me it's more about will I be staying on iOS 14 for the foreseeable future.

The answer to that is very likely "yes".
Same with staying on Big Sur on my Hack actually.

I never thought I'd see the day where someone actually thought moving over to Google would be a step towards better privacy...but here we are 🤣 Zuck should roll out some Facebook phones, he'd have a few adopters I'm sure.

Not really.

Here’s the thing: The more convenience I want, the more of my personal privacy I have to give up. I could switch to Android and install GrapheneOS and use an encrypted cloud service, but then I won’t have my photos syncing across all device With sharing suggestions and generated Memories. I won’t be able to just start something on my phone and continue where i left off on my tablet with a single gesture. I wouldn’t be able to do a lot of the convenient things that I can do with Apple.

So that means, my only other choice is going to a larger Android provider, and while maybe none of them are hashing my photos on-device (which as we know have had illustrated is actually overall more secure than hashing completely server side), there’s still so much more data collection going on.

At the end of the day, what Apple is going to do for me that Google and other Android OEMs aren’t going to do is protect me from advertisers. You know what’s far scarier to me than a future with obvious oppression? A future where the oppression is invisible. A future where you might have to pay 2x as much for a doctor’s visit because you looked up your symptoms before you went and an AI figured out what you had before you did. Or a future where you get denied a house loan because an AI saw you had friends in a less than popular neighborhood. That freaks out may more than the government.

Give me more privacy, I love that Apple takes our privacy on any Apple device seriously.

I mean you could get the FreedomPhone or whatever it's called, which is a Chinese Android phone that costs $199 and this guy is charging I think $500, saying they don't delete apps, and it runs Android, despite the guy saying it's his own OS, and own App Store, like anyone will put their apps in there when you don't have to agree to TOS, hell what happens with Child P*rn ends up there?

Very good points!

Yeah I do love the continuity between all my devices and there is literally no equivalent for the  watch in the Android realm.

It would be so hard to switch. Ugh. Even though I’m liking the look of Android 12.

It's in the public light now, I think too many people are jumping to too many conclusions way too fast. Idiocracy is looking more like a prediction.

I’m still reserving my final thoughts, I most likely will be updating to the iPhone 13 Pro.

I have to say the reactions may be blown out of proportion simply because it’s .

Yes - it is - but not because of this topic.
Can't really talk more about it or the thread will get shut down.
Cheers

Yeah let’s not get the thread shut down LOL.

Just curious about others upgrade plans.

Nope other platforms are also not good for privacy such as Google or MS.
I don't want to go to the Linux/custom ROM android route.
I like simplicity.
I will still buy an iPhone and Mac next time.

JK

I will indeed be moving to Linux and Custom Android what Apple has done is TOO far.

iOS 14 is the end of the road for me.
While it's extremely unlikely than any kiddie porn enthusiast except an utter moron would collect those kind of photos and save them in the stock Photos App —no less upload the illegal images to iCloud Photos — no less do so when all the world now knows what's going on with iPhone surveillance, the fact that the RottenApple company is now going down this road spells the end of the road for me.

If a third party app decided on their own to do what they're planning to do, (background surveillance of the camera roll) they'd be barred from publishing the app on the App Store by the gatekeepers and nobody would download the app anyway.
The RottenApple company has turned into a surveillance company. Why would anyone want to be associated with that?

What's the battery life impact of all that scanning on devices/chipsets without the Neural Engine?

I'm not a fan of Safari on the 15 Betas anyway so it's looking like just more reasons to stick to 14.

If Apples rolls out the feature to 14? So be it. iCloud Photos is too convenient to give up. Let's hope the chances of false positives is really as low as Apple claims and the mechanism isn't abused for other things.

Until you find one person in court and that person is fighting for their rights. If proven wrong. Just takes one person.

There are options like Calyx and Graphene on the Android side that don’t suffer from those privacy issues.

I’m personally on the fence right now. I flashed my old HTC 10 with /e/ today to see if microG with an anonymous Google account and Aurora Store would work with all my apps and only found two credit unions I use that their apps don’t work out of 26 finance apps I use. All of my other apps work. Both of my games work too although I made the unfortunate choice of using Google for those logins so I will have to keep those games on my iPad. I was expecting more compatibility issues and this means that a Pixel with CalyxOS would work for me.

The thing is… I do like my 12 Pro Max and I’m highly doubtful that I would enjoy a Pixel 5a as much and I’m not going to fork out $1K+ for a Pixel 6 Pro… So I’m undecided. I don’t like the implications of what this could be used for down the line but am not directly impacted by it for now. I am definitely going to watch both the Pixel 6 and iPhone 13 events before I make any decisions. I don’t like the idea of hanging back on iOS 14 in order to maintain my privacy.

So one of two things will happen - I’ll switch or I’ll upgrade.
