Hearing all these reviewers describe how absolutely amazing the new MacBook Air design is freaks me out.

Yes, the bezels are smaller. Yes, it has magsafe. Yes, it comes in colors.

But is it objectively BETTER design? The build quality is the same, it already couldn't have gotten better than the previous Air. The aesthetics, does it actually look BETTER? I'm not talking does it look different, but BETTER? I really can't say, nor do I care. They both look fantastic. But all these reviewers are like," Oh my gosh my mind is blown. I'm so amazed. It looks so *sleek* and *modern*".

(PSA Industrial Designers absolutely laughs at the use of describing a product as sleek and modern because they don't mean anything in the trade. They are equivalent to calling something "good").

I feel like we are that point where laptop functionality and design really can't get much better than this, and we are at a point where Apple is just going to take laptop designs and make them "different" and tell their marketing Youtube team to say how gamechanging their designs are when they really aren't.

Does anyone else feel this way?

This is exactly why people need to learn how to form their own opinions, instead of depending on a complete stranger (with totally different needs) to tell you how to feel about something.

And no, the hype doesn’t freak me out, because the only hype that matters to me is my own.

I agree. Apple has been recycling the unibody design in some way or another since they first introduced it. I like the new MBA, I liked the old MBA. But I don't consider it amazing.

Why is everyone so upset about the positivity when it comes to this laptop or any other Apple product? You have a small but very loud group of people here that criticize everything Apple does. They're going crazy trying to convince everyone how bad the new Air is. I can sum up their points in Notch, One NAND, No fan. When the M1 came out it was the 8 GB RAM but they're not so much on that one because it takes the wind out of their One NAND.

Normal users don't care about these things and the funny thing is they're not here to hear the negativity. They're watching iJustine and putting in their orders.

Is there hype sure but unless you're the most negative person you don't want to watch someone complain or whine for ten minutes on a video... That's why it's positive. They mention the negative parts but not going to dwell on or complain about them.

Why does shills doing their jobs freak-u-out?

You know what would be funny? Somehow replace the new device for some influencer (maybe iJustine?) with broken crap, and then on release day watch them gush profusely over a falling apart, piece of junk, while trying to hide the fact. Hilarious,

Apple has always done a great job with creating buzz over it's products. The fact that we are hanging out at a site called "Macrumors" suggests that we have an insatiable appetite for Apple news and hype.

Enjoy it. I'm not seriously in the market for one of these, but I do enjoy all the fuss and discussion about new Apple products.

So I wasn’t sure about the design until I checked out my roommate’s new Air just now.

Holy moly it feels good in the hands. All aesthetic, I know, but it is just so satisfying to hold. That alone made me reconsider my M1 Air. I’m a sucker for good aesthetics.

I don't want something that gets hot and throttles real bad after 3 minutes which this M2 MBA does.

I already got that on my 2019 16" i9 MacBook Pro.

You’re forgetting the part where this only happens under workloads that are intended for a higher-end laptop anyway. If you’re using the entry level laptop as an entry level laptop it’ll be the best entry level laptop you could possibly imagine.

To be honest, Apple should have ditched the notch now that Apple has announced that you can use your iPhone as a webcam.

Did anyone “reviewer” point this out?

Most people who got a MBA have an iPhone too.

why would they? what about all the people who won't use their iphone as a webcam, or have an android phone, or...

the notch is not there to annoy you, it has a function. and one day you'll wake up to a new mac without it. right now, it's just part of the specs.

You can't really trust any of Apple's shills. Sad but true. If they bought their own and received them the same time we did it would be different. You really have to wait for the units to get in the hands of respected review sites like Tom's Hardware and Anandtech (+ many others) to get truly unbiased reviews.

Not really nor does anyone care how you feel about it 😂

No

None of it creeps me out. I long ago learned to form my opinions and evaluate my hardware needs for my (family's) use case(s). I'm thankful to have read a lot of comments on these forums that helped me learn this.

I will say, I've been extra hard on my (base) M1 MBA, trying to convince myself I need an(other laptop that is a) M2 MBA - and I just can't do it! Sad because there was plenty of stock in my area for today's pickup as recently as a few hours ago. :-(

Exactly. A lot of reviews are treating the M2 as able to do the low end stuff without breaking a sweat as a given since that was beaten into the ground when the M1 came out. Now that there are higher end but last gen options available, the focus is on finding where the line between this and higher end models is.

I didn’t think the new Pros looked good at first, but they feel great to hold with the rounded edges. I wish some of the vent edges were a little less sharp, but there are other sides to hold from. I imagine the Air is even better in that respect.

The hel are you talking about. If it “creeps you out” then you got problems. I LOVE watching video reviews I even see them twice every once in a while.

Yeah I kind of feel this way also. When the more square-ish MacBook Pros came out there seemed to be more diversity of opinion in terms of the design. Now we have a replacement for what is likely Apple’s most loved design, and everyone seems to be gushing. It feels a little contrived to me.

Also it seems like a lot of early reviews were review units and I wonder how many of the early reviewers just want to maintain their special status as the people Apple sends early review units to. Maybe that’s not fair.

Anyway, I think the new Air seems really nice. I just think it’s a bit of a mixed bag that clearly has some compromises. I will likely buy a mid range M2 Air for my wife next year to replace her 2013 Air, but am not in a huge rush. I’ll definitely avoid the 256GB model, as I think that was a mistake.

design preferred by more people.
I don't think there was a poll made by Apple asking them what would they like in which non wedge design with notch got the most votes.

We got what Apple has served us. We have no choice in this really other than not buying it.

Heck, I haven't got used to the new Mac OS design language since the Yosemite. In fact, it got even worse in the past few years imo. Why am I still using it? Because I still think there is no OS like Mac OS. Even if it made some questionable design choices lately, under all that it is still the good old Mac OS that I used to love.

In short, no one is asking you or me anything.
