I don't think there was a poll made by Apple asking them what would they like in which non wedge design with notch got the most votes.

We got what Apple has served us. We have no choice in this really other than not buying it.

Heck, I haven't got used to the new Mac OS design language since the Yosemite. In fact, it got even worse in the past few years imo. Why am I still using it? Because I still think there is no OS like Mac OS. Even if it made some questionable design choices lately, under all that it is still the good old Mac OS that I used to love.

In short, no one is asking you or me anything.
personally the menu bar being broken up doesnt matter. any power user is going to use shortcut keys to get to that stuff and any app you rarely need the menu bar you go click on it. rather have that then a black bar accross the entire top and less real estate.

I find the entire review and hype ecosystem rather repugnant. These aren't objective reviewers, and they must know they aren't, yet they're leveraging the system to carve out a career for themselves. And when you consider how their efforts induce some people to buy who otherwise don't need or can't afford this stuff then it all starts to seem rather dirty. They're the YouTube equivalent of a pharmaceutical commercial.

I don't want something that gets hot and throttles real bad after 3 minutes which this M2 MBA does.

I already got that on my 2019 16" i9 MacBook Pro.

ok there MaxTech, I have seen videos where the M2 handles a video workload nicely.. but the worst part of your post was about the i9 Macbook Pro. It's a fine machine.

I for one am eager to put my schwanzstucker in a light socket if Luke or MaxTech recommend it, like I did when I bought the 2020 iMac.
the 2020 imac is legit. 10 core with 128gb ram is my main workstation now and it will stay that way until all the bugs are ironed out with my work software (protools)

Seriously, I think people are being too sensitive about this. Someone who gets an Apple product ahead of release is going to be largely positive about it?! Shocking! Apple isn't sending out their products so that a reviewer can release a boring video like "idk the design is fine I don't care either way, we have reached the peak and nothing can improve." It's a marketing. Does it objectively look better? How could that be objective... People here throw fits about the notch and I think it looks fine, I think the Midnight is ugly, so on

Influencers influencing does not creep me out, it is so easy just to not watch any of those videos. If you're buying something you cannot afford because of a youtube video, you're a fool and have bigger problems than iJustine...

I agree hype culture is gross, and having it invade the tech space sucks, but idk its fine to still get excited over new tech progression when its warranted. Just ignore all the influencers/youtubers/etc. and enjoy things on your own I suppose.

Hearing all these reviewers describe how absolutely amazing the new MacBook Air design is freaks me out.

Yes, the bezels are smaller. Yes, it has magsafe. Yes, it comes in colors.

But is it objectively BETTER design? The build quality is the same, it already couldn't have gotten better than the previous Air. The aesthetics, does it actually look BETTER? I'm not talking does it look different, but BETTER? I really can't say, nor do I care. They both look fantastic. But all these reviewers are like," Oh my gosh my mind is blown. I'm so amazed. It looks so *sleek* and *modern*".

(PSA Industrial Designers absolutely laughs at the use of describing a product as sleek and modern because they don't mean anything in the trade. They are equivalent to calling something "good").

I feel like we are that point where laptop functionality and design really can't get much better than this, and we are at a point where Apple is just going to take laptop designs and make them "different" and tell their marketing Youtube team to say how gamechanging their designs are when they really aren't.

Does anyone else feel this way?

I’ve felt this way for the last 10 years. Build quality is getting worse if anything because they’re getting thinner. The old 2 through 4 were much more solid than the new ones. I’m not complaining, thin is nice, but new designs are just different, not better.

Not personally creeped, but the whole algorithmic fashion of these videos where they try to touch on things and come off as genuine really annoy me. There’s no authentic reactions without having to hit some kinda metric in these YouTube videos anymore. They’ve been gaming for maximum bullet points that maximize revenue for the content creator. None of it feels genuine and authenticious. /masshole

Yes, yes, and yes. I'm assuming the overkill is part these reviewers actually like the device, also a combination of needing to get clicks and free stuff from Apple. I went into the Apple store today to check it out and I wasn't that impressed. I really didn't see/feel much difference between the m2 and my m1 MBA. I felt like the side by side by side comparison between the M1 and M2 MBA is really not much. When I then looked again at the M1 14" MBP that was where I see and feel a difference.

Bro. Rene gotta get paid! If they aren’t talking about rEvOlUtIoNaRY products that have only had minor changes….come on. Also going from gold to sTaRlIgHt (aka DirtySilver) was brave and took courage. I think they are running out of design gas big time….hardware internals is on a climb…but externals….Apple hasn’t taken a chance on anything in years. Remember when Apple had interesting flops? I miss the days when they took chances…instead of having courage with ports.

what do people expect? (most) reviewers on youtube are aiming for numbers, for getting regular macusers to watch their videos; it's a pop culture moment, and they need followers, views to maintain.

then there are also the reviewers for the 'rest of us' (geeks, macrumors ppl, etc). less flash, noise... more facts.

there's nothing wrong with enthusiasm. and i feel like i am smart enough to sort out the flash from useful information... and then, make my own decisions about what i might want, or not want. i imagine that's true for most forum ppl as well.

a little excitement is not a bad thing; not every video has to be 30 minutes of stats, tech details. there's room for all of it, and you can watch the videos that interest you, and skip the ones that dont.

What I find weird is how much the fan base quickly criticizes the old design as soon as Apple introduces a new design. There are so many excuses to find faults with the old generation. It sounds more like an excuse to upgrade to the latest version. But, Apple started on Apple Silicon will the old chassis and is even still selling its latest M2 SoC with the old generation Touch Bar chassis. Don't get me wrong, the first generation model (2016) was bad out the gate and there some questionable decisions, but people still got work done on that generation.

The new MacBook Air is a nice revision, it looks good, but I am sure I will continue to get work done on my M1 MBP and so will M1 Air users. I hear concerns from some groups of Intel MacBook Air users looking for justification to upgrade to this too. Come on, we know what you do on this type of machine and I'm sure typing in Pages, watching YouTube, browsing Facebook and Google News was never that stressful.

As the delta between subsequent generations gets smaller the hype remains the same. I've seen some articles saying this is the most important Mac Apple's made in a while.

We're way past the 90s/2000s when a computer could be obsolete in a couple of years. So many of the claims seem hyperbolic. Outside of gaming and extreme professional needs the computer has become just an appliance. I still see a good amount of people using old Macs with a lighted logo, and it seems to work just fine for them. The new Macs are ridiculously more powerful than those... so any new Mac would last basically forever for someone like that.

I tend to push my Macs to the limit. I run Logic but also try to get the best value Mac I can afford, so every Mac I had I just accepted the limitations and worked around it. But with the M1 there doesn't seem to be any limitations... the ceiling is so high now it's effectively gone now. It's pretty nice knowing the computer you have now is 100% good for your needs.

I also find it weird when the fan base gets upset when a new model of a device isn't coming out. Best example of this was the Mac mini in the mid-2010s when the last update was in 2014. People were/are getting angry and worked up about a product update, it's not like they are getting it for free they still have to pay for it. What's the big deal if a product is still being sold that hasn't gotten an update or redesign? As long as it can handle the workload that its intended audience will be using and it is still getting security updates, who gives a damn? If you don't want it, don't buy it, wait for your update.
