Same here. I think it's quite odd that the battery would be completely dead on a brand new device.

Makes me wonder if it was removed from the box, turned on and then put back in the box without turning off.

A check on the timer might shed some light but then again, there are others here who have unboxed dead 5C units.

what timer?
The box seemed factory sealed.
I dont know how they wouldve taken it out and put it back in like that.

It's fine. It was likely old stock. It's not dairy, it can't go bad from sitting on the shelf too long. Charge it and you're good to go.

My i5 was flat as a fart straight out of the (sealed) box. It took a good 10 mins before it even recognised the charger. I suspect it was old stock, a 32GB that I purchased 9 months after launch.

If you want to find out about how far back your phone goes, go into Settings --> Cellular, and scroll down to the very bottom.

That will show you when the cellular usage stats were last reset. And if you never reset the stats, that date and time will likely show when iOS was loaded onto the phone and tested before getting boxed and shipped.

I ordered my phone on the launch date Sept. 20 and it arrived on Sept. 25. The cellular stat reset date on my phone says Sept. 21, so the phone was setup at the factory around the time that I ordered the phone. I recall that my phone had more than 50% charge when it arrived.

i dont know how long it was laying in the store.
It was the last stock they had, because the iphone 6 is expected soon and they are trying to sell all the 5c ones.
Thats why they are a bargain now.

You don't need to worry about taking it back to Apple. If you're not having battery life problems, just keep going on as normal. Congrats on your new iPhone!

Thanks!
Battery life is crucial for me and I take good care of my battery. I just want make sure that I have a good battery.
I was startled when I wanted to set up my new phone and I got zero reaction from pushing the startup button.

Definitely old stock lol

Keep in mind 0% is not 0vdc. It's pretty bad for a lithium ion battery to reach 0vdc. If 100% is 4.2vdc 0% is probably around 3vdc give or take.

If you use ibackupbot on a PC or Mac you'll find the batteries full charge capacity. Divide that by it's new capacity and you'll have it's health (ex 95%).

I'd keep an eye on that battery. I've had every iPhone since the 3GS. I bought an iPhone 5 on Launch Day and the battery was so dead that it needed to be charged before it could be activated. Turns out the battery was bad. It would lose charge even when powered off.

More than likely it was just old stock, but like I said, keep an eye on it. Good luck!

i tried ibackupbot and that didn't work at all.
it tries to recognize my phone as an ipod and fails at that.
can't see the battery charge on my ipad either.
are there any other apps i can try?
