That's exactly what happened with mine. It eventually wore down to bare metal.

Apple replaced both the iPad and smart cover. I've added moleskin to the part of the cover that touches the iPad just to be safe.

Out of curiosity, how do you carry it with you? I'm starting to wonder if it's not an effect of the case I use - a cheap neoprene sleeve that holds it fairly tightly - I figure it might allow enough flexing/rubbing in my bag to cause the wear.

My iPad has only left the house once and that was on a vacation and I just carried it around. No case for me.

Interesting... well... there goes my theory. :D Hopefully the extra padding I've added to the smart cover will keep my iPad wear-free.

I just purchased a Smart Cover (Poly gray) today. Had it on for most of the day. When I took my iPad to work, I put it with the smart cover on, in my leather sleeve. When I left work, I took the smart cover off and noticed too small scuff type marks on the aluminum body where the smart cover attached to the iPad. Not sure why this happened as it doesn't seem like any of the smart cover's aluminum touches the ipad. I wasn't sure if it was because I stuck it in my leather sleeve or what.

Anyway, took the smart cover off.

I think it scratches when you carry it and cause the case to move about.

I think I'm gonna get the case linked to in the "wife dropped my iPad" thread for carrying it about as let's face it the smart cover isn't very protective.

And just use the smart cover for around the house

Is not just the smart cover issue. I have found the charging pod also are prone to scratches.

Is where the 2 pointy bit on the side from the charger where it meets the charging pod on the ipad2.

I've had mine since Mar. 17. I have the cover off and on all day. When I'm just sitting on couch, I don't like holding the iPad with the cover flopping around in back, so when I settle in, the cover comes off. When I get up, I usually put it back on for Justin (you know - Justin Case?).

Anyway - no marks. I have to admit, I do check from time-to-time.

Can you clarify the 'cover flopping around in back' please?

When I looked in the Apple shop I was pleased to find you flip the cover around the back and it magnetically clings to the rear. That is, the hinge is magnetically attached on the left, while the opposite side is holding on to the back of the iPad on the right, no flapping. Are you not finding this, or is it sagging in the middle?

The smart cover's edge opposite from the hinge side does not cling to the back of the ipad very tightly. It can get dislodged extremely easily.

This is true, those pointy bits that stick out on the charging cable can easily scratch the area around the charging connector of the iPad. You have to be careful when inserting it.

Yes, my brothers is full of scratches.

He wouldn't listen when I told him it was an overpriced accessory. He's since removed it and gone with a sleeve as I have.

yes, the smart cover will scratch the side of the ipad. Debris can get stuck in between and rub against the aluminum. I have a nasty deep scratch on the side of the aluminum from the smart cover.. took it off

This. I have both covers, and only use the smart cover for when I am in the kitchen or in the living room. Use my other cover for when I go out. In bed, and in my office I don't use any covers at all.

And I don't get any scratches from the smart cover either. So far atleast :)
