iPad Does the Smartcover for iPad Air fit the iPad Air 2

Is there a way to tell which is which from the outside of the box? Without opening it? (of course the air2 case lacks the silent switch cut-out, but that isn't visible from the outside of the box)

Some local stores still have only the air1 smart case on shelves.
 
I'm wondering about the Smart Cover... I bought a black Smart Cover for my new iPad Air 2, but now I'm wondering if I ended up with one designed for the iPad Air? Is there a new version for the Air 2/how can I tell which I have?

You're referring to the Smart Case. This thread is about the Smart Cover which is different.

The easiest way to tell is simply by color. The old iPad Air cover is very obviously black while the new one is very obviously grey.

I bought the Smart Cover for my new air 2. It's grey and I think I'd rather have the true black. Other than color, are there any other differences between the one released with air 2? Magnets the same strength, etc?

Anyone know a retailer discounting a black Smart Cover?

I think someone mentioned on here that they are the same thing, quality and fit, just different color.

Walmart.com has the black ones for 10 bucks off. You can order online and pickup at your local store.

MF053LL/A is the model number for the older Smart Cover for the Air 1 which is true black.

I'd love a second confirmation that it's exactly the same product, just a different color.

I have the true black one (which is apparently for the iPad Air 1), but I think I like that a whole lot better than a lighter color. My original iPad mini had a "black" cover which was actually medium grey, and this looks much better.

Here's your second confirmation that they are exactly the same product, just a different color.

Last year's model # is MF053LL/A (Truly Black)
This year's model # is MGTM2ZM/A (Actually Gray)

So anyone who owns the two smart covers can post the weight of the two covers and the thickness of each one?

I don't have a scale, so I can't give you any numbers, but I have both the 2013 and 2014 smart covers and the new one is definitely lighter. The thickness is the same to my eyes, and the fit and magnets also appear to be identical. Despite the added weight, last year's cover has two advantages over the new one: it is black rather than gray, and it actually lays flat on the screen when closed (the new one does not).
 
What has not been mentioned yet is that the cover for the Air 2 has the metal hinges covered with polyurethane. The Air 1 hinges are unprotected metal which have caused some users to report slight scratches on the Air 1.

That is completely incorrect.

The Air 1 and Air 2 have identical polyurethane hinges. The old 2010-2012 iPads have the metal hinges.

Incorrect- I have the Air 1 cover, and the hinge is fully covered to prevent scratches. The Smart Cover for the earlier iPad models did have bare metal hinges.

There are in some shops and also in some kitchens ( incredible right?!) gram scale and micrometer are widely available for purchase....
I don't pretend you have all this marvels of evolution, but someone could have this.... Christmas is near: time to consider the purchase of a scale to make some cakes 😀😀😀

As rgarjr said, the real-world difference is so insignificant you wouldn't notice. If you had a pair of socks where one set weighed a little bit more than another, it's like that.

Your Air 1 vs. Air 2 Smart Cover focus should be on one thing only- Color. If you want true Black instead of Grey, you need to find last year's Air 1 version before they're all sold out and worth more than a first-state Butcher Cover.

Just picked up the green one from staples for $20. Love it! Keeps it's slimness, debating on returning the smart case yet again 😱
