I wouldn't do it, the guy in Malaysia might receive the package, and pretend that he didn't get it, and files a claim on ebay and will probably ask for the money back.

This happened to me, and this is why I don't ever sell on ebay and I only sell on swappa and only within the U.S.

Plus, I could be wrong but if you send it via USPS, once it leaves US territory, the package is not trackable, so there is always a risk.

I'm talking about doing it privately just him and I over PayPal or wire

No, he can dispute via PayPal and you'll have no recourse through eBay. Definitely not wire as it can be fraudulent. Members who go outside of eBay often find themselves screwed one way or another. Be smart and don't do it.

Ok, thanks

I've sold several iPhones over CL without giving anyone my address. All in good condition. No scams.

If someone wanted my address, I'd find another buyer.

----------

Same. And, they have my phone number if they have issues.

This here. I was selling a brand new 55inch tv and some buyers wanted to come to my house and turn it on. I refused. Finally found a buyer who met me at the bank and took it off me without needing to see it work. He checked everything and it was brand new as described.

If they want to sell a phone to me, they need to let me know where they live so if the phone is later blacklisted, I know where to serve papers on them.

You show your ID anytime you use a check. Are you in fear that the cashier is a random lunatic who will hunt you down now that they saw your address on your ID?

The person who is buying your phone is a not a random person - they are a person you are choosing to do business with.

If you sold furniture on craig's list unless it was in a storage unit, the people come to your house to look at it and pick it up so they know where you live. What is the difference?

Who uses checks at a store?

Does this change your opinion or confirm his legitimacy in any way or should I still not do it?

edit: and honestly you're smart enough to ask this forum for some advice or a second opinion but for some delusional reason choose not to take heed of the advice and you still want to push a sale through to get the maximum amount of cash. its a scam. find a legitimate way to sell your phone and don't expect to gain the entirety of what the phone costs.. its pretty annoying to have people tell you that its a scam post after post and you still ask if its legitimate. you don't even bother to do a google search on the information you got from the "scammer"...

Wow, I feel sheepish. :( You're right, I was just trying to maximize my profit, guess I'll stick to eBay or Swappa. Thanks again.

No worries, looks like I needed it lol. Thanks again.

I buy on Craigslist here in Japan quite a lot. When it's something large like a microwave I meet them at their home to check it out. The item, I mean. Not their home. That'd be creepy :)

I find it interesting some of you wouldn't allow a CL buyer into your home when selling something high-value. Yes, there are the crazies but then every private transaction carries a risk that I'd like to mitigate as much as possible.

I would never buy something high-value like an iPhone off CL, and definitely not something that could be blacklisted later. Like an iPhone. Secondly, I would never buy it unless it was at their home. Don't get me wrong - I'm not saying you guys should let buyers into your home if you don't want to, just that I would never buy something high-value by meeting up somewhere random, nor would I sell it as such unless the buyer asked to meet me somewhere else.

I've only sold one thing which was a small fridge. The buyer visited my home to pick it up.

So far everyone I've bought from and sold to has been an absolute pleasure to deal with, even the ones who I initially considered a bit dodgy. Most have a great story to tell(software engineer who was selling everything to bike around Japan for a few years) or a cool career(bought random cookware from a guy researching quantum computing).

One guy was offering 8GB laptop memory for about $25. Madness, I thought. He canceled the first meeting saying he couldn't find the sticks and I just assumed he got cold feet and wanted to relist at a higher price. I gave up but a few weeks later I got a message saying he'd found them - now my Macbook is running great with the 8GB!

I get a feel for the person through their emails. For example, someone was selling MS Office for a good price(further discounted because of no interest) but his emails were brusque, he didn't have a receipt despite claiming it was a few months old, couldn't convince me it had been deactivated(just said "I've uninstalled it"), and after all that he decided he wasn't going to honour the $10 discount because he'd have to take a $3 round trip to meet me:

Then I found out that I could buy MS Office through the Home User Program for $10.

I'd be wary about using CL back home but here in Japan I just feel more at ease.
