After 2 17mbps i thought the problem was gone. But I get the flickering when using 9400 on lowest setting. It seems to come when I hear the HD working. I would click a link on macrumors -> HD access = flicker.

Quite interesting observation.

But since I experience the issue too and have SSD, it doesn't seem to depend on whether you have HDD of SSD.

Difference is that I can't test when something accesses SSD - it's absolutely silent.

i believe it happens when you work the cpu/gpu intensively. I've noticed this case when using the 9600gt. it's the opposite effect with the 9400m. When the 9400 is cold, it pulsates but goes away after it warms up ( about 10 minutes).

Now, if i use the 9600 and starts off cold, i get no flicker but when you warm it up, i get the flicker. It's the opposite of the 9400.

so weird..and annoying.

Mine is fine with both the 9400 and the 9600.

Are you sure its just not the auto adjust for the brightness level? I had what I thought was a flicker but it was just the auto adjust and when I turned it off the problem went away.

screen flickering issue

i know what u mean and i'm not holding my breath for a firmware fix either. I'm just learning to live with it. The weird thing with mine is, if i use the 9400, the flicker goes away after 10 minutes of being cold. If i use the 9600, it's the opposite, it starts off with no flicker but if it gets hot, i get the pulsating , again, at low brightness levels only. Other than that, i love this mbp.
Hi jgo78, I have a MBP 15, purchased on apple refurb beginning of May 2009. I had exactly the same issue as you: flickering when MBP is cold on 9400m, and flickering when MBP is warm on 9600m GT. I tried disabling the "automatically adjust brightness" setting, to no avail. I brought it to a Mac service center, they said they didn't see the flickering :( I insisted and after a new test, the display went out completely, and was restored by a reboot. So they changed the panel, and fortunately the flickering has disappeared :D The panel used to be a "N154C6-L04", it's now a "P154WP3-TLA1" (found this out using the following command: ioreg -lw0 | grep IODisplayEDID | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6). What panel do you have?

I have the 9c84 panel. If I take it in, I know, they'll say they don't see the problem so I won't bother for now. ( might come back worse or with scratches or somehing, not worth the hassle). Nice to know someone has the exact same problem as me in the exact same conditions.

Haven't seen flickering on two of the 17"s that I've owned, third one is coming next week.

I do however, have a high pitched noise coming from the left side of the screen, most probably the inverter. Most evident when it is between 60-90% brightness.
