iPad 2. Never crashes. I use safari all the time and usually have 7 or 8 tabs active at any given time. Also I rarely kill apps and usually have over a dozen sitting in the background, many of them games that are resource hogs.

iPad 1 here. Since installing iOS 5 it has been mostly stable except that Safari crashes more than I would like. Probably 2 times per hour on average, it is still tolerable. But before iOS 5 it barely ever crashed.

Other apps do crash occasionally but not very often, probably about the same as before iOS 5.

iPad 1 here. Crashes all the time. Safari is the biggest culprit. Opening multiple tabs consecutively causes this almost 100% of the time. Otherwise it's random in apps, gets annoying though.

We held (wife, son and I) on to one of our two iPad 1's after the purchase of two iPad2's at launch (one for wife and I). The iPad 1 is for our son and we also use it in the field for our business. Yesterday, I pulled out the iPad 1 (it had been a month or so since used) and removed all unnecessary apps--my son is 7, so his games are still there. A couple of 'office/productivity' apps and DJay (we run an A/V production company). Everything else was taken off the iPad as we are getting ready for a trip down to Vegas...I wanted to free up a bunch of room to load some of my ripped DVDs for our son's entertainment.

I don't use Safari. My preference is iCab. Second browser choice, Atomic. However...on my iPad 1, I've found the MOST stable browser(s) to be Maven and Mercury. Opera is pretty damn good too (as far as minimal crashing). On our two iPad 2's...I've had zero issues with crashing on any of these choices. Again, number one (and 90% usage) choice is iCab. No issues with crashing of other apps either...games, office, etc. The ONE app that does crash on both systems (for me) is my daily RSS choice--"The Early Edition 2". I love EE, have used it since it first dropped in the market, Early Edition 1. It does crash, probably once or twice a week and I use it 8-10 hours per week. Not a big issue.

Last night...after clearing out my iPad 1...keeping stock apps and a couple browsers, couple dozen games, and a few productivity apps...it felt damn good! I watched an entire movie (Midnight Express....Phenomenal Flick by the way:)) on Netflix without an issue, not a single glitch. Surfing on Maven and Mercury, NO crashes...and my son played a good 45 minutes of everything from Cut the Rope to PvZ--Dungeon Hunter2 to Real Steal. He had zero issues. Not sure what worked, what didn't...BUT, all this to let you know I DID in fact reset and restore the iPad before cleaning it out. It's running iOS 5.01

I was actually considering selling it to make room for at least one of the upcoming iPad 3s....BUT, I've reconsidered. I'm going to keep at least one of each of them moving forward. I'm really impressed how well the iPad 1 continues to hang in there--for my son's basic usage anyway. Obviously, if you are more of a "Power User", YMMV.

Yes. To the point that I am becoming less inclined to ever buy a new one. It's very frustrating, especially as the local Genius Bar guy tried to sell me some bullcrap about memory usage and multi-tasking.

iOS 6 better fix it. Come to that, if they lock me out of iOS 6 because I have a first-gen iPad, I'll be looking at non-Apple alternatives. This isn't a knee-jerk reaction or hating. It's the only sensible step given how much the utility of my iPad is diminished by this behavior.

Really? Seriously? Have you looked at the "non-Apple" alternatives "Update" history/frequency...or ACTUAL availability? MOST 'Droid tabs are STILL waiting for ICS Update answers...as well as their phones. So many still running old 2.xx versions. And ICS has been out for what...3 months? Maybe 4...Apple updates their OS simultaneously...throughout the line, at the same time. So features won't be available to older hardware variants. It makes sense! Technology marches on!!! It's totally, 100% up to you whether or not to update to the latest iOS version. It's not mandatory, never has been. AND, to date, we ALL know that slow-downs can and do occur in some cases. With this in mind, aren't you better off to forgo iOS6 forward? Obviously, some of the new features will tempt you...but in order to take advantage of them, invest in the new hardware. You can still command a really decent price on the used market for your original iPad. They've bottomed out at around 300 bucks! That's amazing (to me) that you can recoup 60-70% (if you originally bought refurbished) of your investment 2 years later! Just awesome!!!

That's one very cool 'feature' of these iOS devices. I've found the same with each iPhone variant. I've been able to update yearly through my service with the subsidy (I've got a half dozen iPhones for our employees on a business acct)...so I've also sold the predecessor as I upgrade my wife and I's phones. From the iPhone 4, 18 months old...I got 375 on Craigslist within an hour> Bought my 4s for 299! Un-Real!

...sorry for the length, but I actually DO believe what you're considering IS a "Knee Jerk reaction." "Hating"? Not so much...grab yourself a Droid tab (I have a Galaxy and Xoom)...then you're truly find out what "Hating" means when they release Devil's Food Cupcake...or whatever 5.0 is going to be called;)

I've sold/supported Apple's iOS products for many years now and spent time behind the genius bar, so I figured I should offer my advice for people who are having frequent crashes.

Get all your data synced off the device, which is different from backing up in iTunes. If you're concerned about losing text messages you can pursue 3rd party software to extract them. When you're POSITIVE that you're not concerned with losing anything run a DFU mode restore on the device (youtube it). When this process is finished, select to set up the device as new, as opposed to restoring from a backup, and then sync your data manually back onto the device. I definitely quit all apps on my devices a few times a day, rarely power them off, hard reset every once in a while for fun, and I experience virtually no crashes. Maybe one app once a month. If this doesn't solve your issues, then you have a legitimate reason to ask Apple to replace your device. In or out of warranty is the only remaining question at that point. Hope this helps. I've seen this work countless times on my customer's products.

To crash safari on iPad 2 try this: select any word on a paragraph and then try to extend selection to any contiguous word .It will crash safari immediately !
There is no way I can circumvent this behavior !
Just reset safari deleting cookies, history etc..
Then power and home button sequence ,but the same happens here
I'm on iOS 5.0.1
Or just a turn off device ...Doing thr above mentioned will crash my device.

I guess one feature of iOS 5 is to ensure that iPad 1 owners upgrade there iPads as a result of frustration from periodic crashes...especially Safari crashes. I used to be so impressed with how my iPad never crashed. Now, it's almost like using windows. Ok, not that bad.

I've had my iPad 1 since it came out. Loved it, now I hate it and I regret the purchase. I can't go on Safari or apps without it crashing, very frusterating and I can't get anything done on it because of this issue. I had some "safe" browsing websites such as AOL but they recently switched to a new iPad user interface and it crashes every time I open the webpage. I'm noticing more and more websites are doing this without giving you the option which is also very annoying! Should have just bought a laptop....

Safari crashes about five times a day. I only have four tabs open.

Grand theft auto crashes so often that its unplayable because I can't finish a mission.

Wow. I had no idea so many people were having troubles with iPad 1!

Apple really need to stop doing this!

Due to the inability for an average user to restore with an older OS. Apple really is ruining people's devices. It's not on!

Read my previous post in this thread. If you are not willing to go through the process then there is nothing to complain about. I've been through this THOUSANDS of times with people face to face walking into an Apple store looking for help, and ~90% of the time what I've described solves the problem and improves performance. The whole planned obsolescence argument is bogus. If you don't want to run the risk of decreasing the performance of your product then don't download the new software versions from Apple. New software not running on an older computer is accepted by most people. We have to make the same correlations with our iPhones and iPads as well.

Excellent point.

BTW, my iPad 2 has crashed once since 3/22/11, and that was caused by an app.

Mine crashes all the time with safari. Other apps randomly too.

Went to best buy to check out iPad 2, checked the logs, same thing.

Waiting for iPad 3, but this is annoying and obviously apple gets this information and there is many forum postings not just here about it yet they don't do anything.

Apple = The new Microsoft.

I really expected to open this thread and see a response like "only when my wife drives".

Low memory crashes on the iPad 2 happen a lot just depends on the apps you use.

512MB of RAM running a stripped down OS X, it just going to happen.

I'm actually very impressed how well the iPad 2 runs with the RAM it has.

My iPad 2 also crashes with those low ram warnings. But with only a few stock apps. Facebook keeps crashing (but the Facebook app it's crap).
It tends to crash a lot more when gaming but I don't use my iPad for games like my gf does, and she complains a lot about crashes (I've seen the logs, low memory too).

At the risk of being the lone voice of dissent, my 16Gb ipad1 has been running fine, fully updated, using Safari, airvideo etc. very little memory management (I tend to leave stuff running) and very few crashes, even in Safari.
Maybe 1 every week or so but nothing major.
Planning an upgrade this year but only really to get a retina display.
My wifes identical iPad 1 is also behaving itself nicely.

Excellent point.

No, it was not an excellent point. If a company releases an incompatible software update, then they should say so. I definitely would not have installed iOS5, if Apple had warned about the compatibility and performance issues users could experience on iPad 1.

My iPad 1 has been crashing a bit more in general with iOS 5 (to the point that I notice it). For those who say it's memory-related/people need new devices/etc., the iPad 1 has the same RAM as the still-being sold iPod touch, and that arguably is pushing close to the same number of pixels (albeit less "content"), so I suspect there's a memory leak of some sort. The weirder part is that a lot of the crashes are random and on applications you wouldn't think of (I get it with complex games, but basic productivity-type apps)

Maybe you're right. But the fact that Android tablets have their issues doesn't make my iPad any less frustrating.

Knee-jerk reactions are by definition sudden. This is the opposite; the issue has been ongoing for a long time - pretty much since iOS 5. Don't misunderstand me: I want to keep buying iPads. But browsing is by far my biggest use and it's compromised right now.

No, it was not an excellent point. If a company releases an incompatible software update, then they should say so. I definitely would not have installed iOS5, if Apple had warned about the compatibility and performance issues users could experience on iPad 1.

The software releases ARE compatible though. Upgrading older products (not just Apple stuff) to run newer software ALWAYS causes performance issues, but it doesn't cause the device not to function altogether as the word "incompatible" suggests. I can't understand how this concept is so ubiquitous with computers and people don't make the same correlations with their handheld devices. Last year's products will not run this year's software as well as this year's products can. That's all there is to it. If Apple thought about things the way you seem to think they should then there would never be any advancements in their technology. As more powerful hardware emerges they are trying to release products and software updates to keep up with these things. They are a BUSINESS which exists to make and sell NEW products. To sell new things, there must be improvements. Apple can't sacrifice staying on the cutting edge of a multi-billion dollar industry just to appease you. Sorry if this comes as a bit of a shock.

Speed/responsiveness degradation too?

My iPad1 is incredibly pokey. Start/switch to an app like mail or video or iBooks and it takes a good 5-15 secs to get to the app or be ready to use it. Just started doing this a few months ago.

Power cycled, did a fresh OS install and rebuilt the software...no change.

Wow, that's pretty bad.
