What you're looking for is CPU temps. And it also depends on the model year MacBook you have.

Any way based on what you previously wrote I would say you have a real problem. If you go to the store and tell them "my Mac is literally burning my fingers and I don't hear the fan kicking in" it's hard to imagine they wouldn't take a closer look.

Ah, I see.

Okay the temps I see on stat are:

What I'm doing with the MPB: Just browsing FB, Macrumours and one youtube tab open. Also open is iMessage.

Other times it's gotten hot are when streaming a non HD movie/ tv program - or inlayer on SD. It gets both hot and payback begins to stop and start etc.

Looks like CPU is at 53C
RAM is at 67C
Fans are not running? No wonder it gets too hot

Can you hear the fans at all?

Even a 1080p video stream can really get your MacBook boiling. You can probably blame Flash for that.

Also when you're running hot open up your Activity Monitor and look for the processes that are high on CPU usage.

EDIT: Oops just realized justperry already posted this.

You should blame the bottom not having vent lids on every machine besides the retina for that.

Laptops with ventilation run much cooler!

"Does your mac ever get so hot you can't touch it?"
-no ( No sarcasm or snarkism intended )

The temps posted are normal, but the fans should always be turning at a min of ~2k rpm. If your fans are off, then your machine will certainly run hot.

Have you ran some sort of fan management app in the past?

Try SMC and NVRAM resets to see if it resolves the problem. If not, you may need your fans replaced. Run an Apple Hardware Test to see if it throws any error codes. Then take it to an Apple Store or an authorized repair shop to see what can be done.

Thanks guys.

No I don't hear any fan running at all. Not even the faintest sound!

Get either iStat Pro (free) or iStat Menus (free trial) and check if the fans are spinning and at what speed.
At idle they/it should run at ~2000rpm.

edit: I see you have used iStat Pro and the fan isn't running, there is a problem there!

My old 2007 model Macbook Pro would get slightly painful to use during long World of Warcraft sessions when it was brand new, but after that I can't say I've had any similar issues with it or machines I've had since.

The only hear caused issue since then has been that the machines haven't been comfortable to use on your lap if you don't have any pants on because it's the underside that gets hot, not the top one.

Hi everyone - my mac once again is getting ridiculously hot:

I've made threads on this before and visited apple who've done tests and said it's fine but it's become a huge problem now.

Within 15 minutes of using my macbook, especially when watching video's (youtube) the left side of my MBP gets extremely hot. And yes, I mean almost burning to the touch. The mouse begins to move slowly and playback is poor. Bare in mind this is when I am using it on a table and I often have to end up propping it up to cool down as I'm worried about the heat.

I no longer hear the fan either.

I'm concerned when I take it to apple (I have an app) once again they'll say nothing is wrong but this is horrendous for a £1000 laptop and I am far from happy.

There's your problem. The cooling fan is busted for some reason. That's going to be the first thing they check, given what you have posted here. That would make it overheat very quickly, which would then lead it to throttle the graphics processor and possibly also the CPU, which would lead to choppy performance.
