No scratches here. iPhone in one pocket, keys and coins in the other and I haven't had an issue.

Phone cases I understand...but I think screen-protectors are just a big scam.

I agree, if you're buying the protectors that cost $25 for the front and back shields (cough Zagg cough ;)) but I usually buy mine in bulk from Asian websites and I usually get 10 front and 10 back protectors for about $12. I've never seen any difference in the quality from any other screen protector and I've had some of these on my phone for up to 4 months at a time.

Had mine for a year now, no problems with just a bumper. It gets put on tables, in pockets, tossed on the couch, etc. My old 3G and original never had a problem either.

I tried a number of screen covers. Gelaskins, Invisible Shield and Bodyguardz.

The Gelaskins was OK. The Invisibleshield had a bumpy texture that prevented your fingers from sliding across the screen easily and collected pocket lint easier. I returned it after a couple weeks. Bodyguardz has been the best by far and I've used them on my iPhones since my original 2G. I just reapplied a new one to my 4 last night as a weekend up north finally caused it to peel off after being on the phone since I got it on iPhone 4 launch day. With the lifetime warranty they will send you a replacement one (you do have to pay $4.95 for processing) and you just send the old one back (if you don't send it back they won't send you another under the warranty).

Additionally Bodyguardz gives you 20% off all future orders once you buy from them once so the protectors for my iPad and iPhone 4 were discounted after buying the original iPhone one years ago. From time to time they also have other coupons which are stackable on top of the loyalty discount. They had a 50% off one a while back so I got my iPad 2 protector for $9.95 shipped after the 50% and 20% discounts.

How bad is the orange peel effect with Bodyguardz, if any? I remember having Invisible Shield on my phone and it was pretty bad. I took it off within a week because I couldn't stand the way the screens looked.

Whichever one has the gummy texture (Invisibleshield, I believe) is terrible. Not only is it not smooth, I could stick my thumbnail into it and it would leave an impression. I prefer the thinner, smoother plastic protectors.

No screen protector, no scratches.

Same here. I use an Incase Snap Case for the back but never put anything on the front. I keep it in my pocket, sometimes with keys. I've even dropped it a few times. There are no scratches yet after one year and counting.

The Snap Case has some gouges where I dropped it though.

I bought an iPhone 3G for $120 and it had some deep scratches (see photo below), and, even a bubble of some weird shape and unknown cause.

I'm not sure what to do about it - but - if you're interested, more pics are here in this unanswered thread:
- Request advice on what causes this odd-shaped bubble or space under iPhone 3G screen

Note the deep gouge on the apple logo!

I've used mine naked for nearly a year. Just put it in my pocket and go. No problem. I can't stand the way screen protectors take away the nice tactile feedback.

my philosophy is that a phone should be used without any protection whatsoever. I trust the manufacturer to incorporate protective films, etc, to the best of their current ability in order to protect a device from wear and tear.

the phone was billed as the thinnest phone (iphone 4) at the time of release; why would you want to hinder your experience of using it as such by putting it in a thick-ass case?

And wear and tear in natural. if you aren't going to sell it later, who are you protecting it for? Just learn to take better care of your things...

at least thats what I think. any input is welcome :)

Scratches happen.

Remember when Apple said the iPhone 4 had helicopter windshield glass and couldn't be scratched? They lied.

I understand why you think they lied because they never made that claim. They said (from Apple's website) that it's "more scratch resistant than ever". A subjective claim and it's still just glass.

It seems that whenever my contract is up and its time for a new iPhone, I use a screen protector and case for the first 6 months or so. It would suck to drop a 2 week old phone on the pavement and sustain cosmetic damage after paying $299. For me, its not so painful to drop an older phone. :)

No scratches on mine and never used a screen protector on it. Then again, never took the time to really look under direct sunlight. If I did find one, I'd shrug it off since it is over a year old. Will get another new phone eventually and we can't take these devices to our grave.

I've read Corning Gorilla Glass also scratches. So I guess it is just marketing B.S. from everybody.

As Apple claims - scratch resistant. Never claimed it to be scratch-proof.

I have protection on for the back but not for the screen. I always put my iPhone in a pocket with nothing else with it and I always place it down on it's back so I don't have any scratches on it. I think you'll be fine too if you do that

When I had the black iPhone 4, without any screen protectors, the back glass had a lot of little scratches and they were very visible. But it's not like I was really careful about takin care of it (I dropped it a floor and then I'm a pool).
Now a year later, I've got the white iPhone 4 and can't really tell if there are scratches on it. But I'm much more careful with this one because it's much more of a beautiful phone.
But I never had any of my phones in the same pocket as my keys, pen, or whatever.

I have scratches on my iPhone 4. I always start out in a case, then after a few months say "I don't really need it" - then the scratches start coming. Maybe the iPhone 5 will use Gorilla glass, we'll see.

I hate screen protectors. I hate the drag they put on the screen. Touch screens and screen protectors do not mesh well.

I always run into this problem as well. Some people say they don't have this resistance with screen protectors. Maybe our fingers are just weird lol. In any case, I'm very careful with my devices regardless and don't have any scratches. For my phones I normally don't use a case, however I have one to apply when I go places I know my phone may be dropped more easily (such as amusement parks, or hiking trips). But otherwise my phones rock the naked look.
