STRAY dogs are being skewered on hooks and dragged behind boats as live shark bait, The Sun can shockingly reveal.

The cruel practice takes place on French-controlled Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean, where Prince William spent two holidays.

A six-month-old labrador pup was recently found ALIVE with a huge double hook through its snout - like the dog above - and another through a leg.

The pup was found in a coastal creek and is thought to have somehow freed itself from a fishing line.

But other dogs and kittens have been chomped up and swallowed by sharks.

The RSPCA plans to petition the French government, demanding an end to the hideous torture.

Interesting how we find some animals offensive as "live bait", but not others... I guess the same is true about food (cows v. cats, etc.).

I find most (if not all) animals to be offensive as "live bait" (but I'm also a meat-eater, go figure..)

As for cows vs cats, when it comes to food. It's probably because they're kept as pets in the west. It'd be almost like eating your friend.

I think the principle of what constitutes "acceptable" bait boils down to "what does the animal you're trying to catch NORMALLY eat?" Fish DO eat worms, crickets, bugs, etc., so it's more OK to use worms, crickets, bugs, etc. as bait.

Sharks do not, as a rule, eat dogs or cats. Ergo, they should not be used as bait. (Besides, dogs and cats are much higher forms of life than worms, crickets, bugs, and fish. The idea of using a live dog or cat as bait disgusts me.)

That's just not right....and very cruel.

And its really that difficult to catch sharks that you have to use dogs and cats as bait?

D

I know a few super-duper animal lovers who will viciously attack any insect they find in their houses.

You need bait, strays are plentiful....the math, if not the morals, work out splendidly.

Usual silly PC disclaimer for the humor-challenged: cynical/outrageous comments posted by Lord Blackadder do not necessarily represent the opinions and or/beliefs of Lord Blackadder, Baldrick, or the rat Baldrick had for lunch. I'm not sure about the rat, I suppose.

thats wrong. a full grown dog?! that was probably somebodies pet! either the owner is heartbroken that their dog has been lost or the animal has been rescued from abusive owners only to face this!

whats wrong with the more conventional methods (ie. that slurry stuff)

also what has

It's for the people that would do this kind of thing that I'd happy endorse the same being done to them.

That makes me feel sick. I honestly can't believe I share a planet with ********* like this.

Same goes for those red neck law enforcers in Louisana who've been on a dog killing spree.

Give me a GLOCK and I'd slot the bastards.

Pieces of sh*t, ALL of them.

In response to questions about what is appropriate for what kind of animal: I am rather certain there is some kind of relation between cuteness, awareness, and social capacity of the species.

I don't mean to disparage the Sun's journalistic integrity in any way, but this sounds very much like an urban legend to me. Snopes.com does have an entry on this, but so far they categorize its veracity as "undetermined".

I hope it is just urban legend... but since it wasn't just a circulating email, I posted it.

I understand, and like everyone else, I would be outraged if this is really going on. However, to get a little perspective, surf over to the Sun's home page and just contemplate their other news offerings. ;)

THAT WRONG ON SO MANY LEVELS

use animals that are alive to catch and then kill more animals, some times people make me sick
