I really hope the attention brought by these news stories brings these practices to an end. :(

Unfortunately I don't have much hope of that happening considering how much coverage that place has gotten than beats the baby seals to death with clubs and they haven't stopped.

I'm no environmentalist, but that is obviously animal cruelty and should be stopped.

i don't believe it...

if he had been thrown overboard with that hook in it's lip the weight of the dog would have ripped the lip severely.

same goes for the concept... the weight of the animal being dragged behind the boat with the hook only in that far would rip it off...

FAKE.

Yeah, the more I think about it, I was about to come back and post the exact same thing. There no way that picture is real.

And whoever made that up is sick.
Completely disgusting.

Even joking about it is just wrong and disgusting! Ew...

How about it you guys from the UK?
Is the Sun story a headline grabbing fake?
Are their stories fakes, or just bizarre?

I'm certainly not defending the accuracy of the story, or condoning the practice...

Take a cute puppy, add in a cruel method for hooking live bait and you got one hell of a fake story.

Could be fake. I would expect a great deal of damage to the mouth if dragged behind a boat, unless the line broke immediately. Could someone have done this on purpose just to bring attention to the practice? How evil.

Now, if it was a cat, it would be different. :) Cats walk on my car. All cats are shark bait to me.

I want to use a Sun writer as bait.

And when you think about it, The Sun has been using Page 3 girls as bait to get people to buy their paper. I know it's not the same thing, but I'm in a weird mood today.

That is just beyond heinous. How would that man in the picture like to be shark bate. Who wants to volunteer to put a hook in his mouth. A dog is man's best friend for a reason. It is man that seems to have built in cruelty.  :(

I think the principle of what constitutes "acceptable" bait boils down to "what does the animal you're trying to catch NORMALLY eat?" Fish DO eat worms, crickets, bugs, etc., so it's more OK to use worms, crickets, bugs, etc. as bait.

Sharks do not, as a rule, eat dogs or cats. Ergo, they should not be used as bait. (Besides, dogs and cats are much higher forms of life than worms, crickets, bugs, and fish. The idea of using a live dog or cat as bait disgusts me.)
I would guess that carniverous sharks will eat pretty much anything that bleeds (which is why I don't trust the picture). Beyond that, I think if people were catching killer whales with baby seals there would be as much anger. I really think that the people who are upset about this may be better off working to get strays spayed/neutered and if that doesn't work, destroyed. When there is such an overabundance dogs and cats, I am not surprised. I don't know if we have ay Chilean members here, but I think that may be a more humane ending than what many of the strays there end up with. Not saying that this is a good thing, not saying it is a bad thing, just trying to think outside the pet box.

Agree that doing this to dogs is just plain wrong. But doing it to cats would be alright, especially the ones that keep pooping in my yard. :p

By the way, that pic is photoshopped.

A brief glance at that picture screams Photoshop, with the way the hook goes in cleanly, but I am too disgusted to zoom in on the picture and check.

Why not use annoying humans instead? Perhaps, the prison population.

Perhaps the people caught using this 'tactic' would be a better first choice? I'm sure they would make fine bait. :(

Death by Vivi-section for these C**k Suckers followed by using thier remains as Shark Bait. May thier intestines be used as guitar string to play thier Death song. I find one of these bastards I will get Demonic on his ass and come up with some horrific form of torture worthy of the Spanish Inquisition.

Sorry, but I am a big animal lover and scum like this derserve worse.

Sharks have a fantastic sense of smell, some can smell blood from up to a mile away. Most species are also infamous for not being choosy about what they eat - the dustbins of the ocean. This story has gotta be bull. Maybe i could believe carcasses of stray dogs being thrown overboard, but not live dogs and cats.

It's not so much the smell of blood that attracts a shark. It's the sound-waves sent out by a person's pulse that attracts them the most. A shark can hear your heart beat from a mile off, not smell your blood.

Oh, and this story is as likely real as my third leg picking itself up one day and announcing to the world it will be applying for Hungarian citizenship. For those of you not acquainted with my third leg, this is improbable at best.
