at least you have a job..and that you like.
I would stick, you like graphic design and finding a job again if the restaurant doesn't work out might be tough

Quality of life trumps money every time.
Agree.

Granted there may be an exception here and there, but overall, this is true.

Good point.

Sorry I didn't fully explained myself. I would be part owner.
Working for yourself is nice. Although 10% ownership is not near the same as 50% And there are no guarantees that the business will be a success. That in itself can create excitement (the good type) with what can become of the business.

Honestly I know where you are coming from with this whole "money is nice".
I understand you want to get married, have kids, live a great life and it does require a lot of money!!!
If you have the opportunity I would take the restaurant job to make good money (3-5 years like you were suggesting) to build the bank - sometimes you gotta lose some (time, doing something you dont love, etc) to gain some. Once you feel you are financially satisfied and ready to settle with a wife and start a family I feel you can get a job in something you like and gives you the ability to spend time with your wife and kids.

I'm not trying to come off as someone all about the money but I have experienced life with a lot of $$$ and then gone down to the bear bones. As a child in the family its easier to see your father happy, earning, and spending time with his family and not having to worry about working overtime to foot the bills.

However, Im just a 20 year old kid who probably knows little to none about the real working world but I think when Im out of college next year Im going to aim to make a fair amount (through a job and investing) before I settle. Just want the best for the "future" family and myself hehe.

Oh and its not all about money for me like the OP. My mom is in critical condition but if someone offered my even $10 million or make her get welll I would choose her any day. However, if given an opportunity to earn the most I could when I was single and able to I would take it.

Cheers

Let me keep this simple and give you an example, why are you guys in a Mac community? You can have a windows laptop for $700 these days. Why do you guys want a MB or MBP or even a MP? It looks better, it runs nicer but you pay the price. Wouldn't you all want a 30" ACD instead of a 30" Dell if you had the money? It's pretty much the same thing.

I buy Apple's for the OS. That's my only reason. The features like Dashboard, Spaces, Expose, etc, are stuff I use dozens of times a day. The freeware and cheap shareware apps I can get for a Mac are far better than it is for Windows or Linux.

About specs: Price out other laptops, and a MacBook isn't expensive. Honest. Someone in the Buyer Advice forum tried to argue otherwise last week using her own example, and when I spec'ed out her example to be equivalent to a MacBook, I got a slower, thicker laptop, but with a really low end graphics card (although it is still slightly better than the MacBook's integrated graphics). Besides that, her laptop would have been $200 more than a MacBook. The PC laptop I spec'd out was still fairly new, while Apple's MacBook is nearly end of life, and honestly, what EOL product is NOT behind the curve? The graphics issue is related to product cycle, as the next integrated graphics solution will be far far better than what we have now.

I don't see why you need to buy into the company in order to be the manager. That's just weird, and it sounds a bit "scammy" to me. I know it probably isn't, since your friend's family is in the restaurant business, but something still sounds strange about this.

But anyway, take the new job. :D

If I remember correctly, you're from Toronto, right? Which restaurants do his family own?

You may think I was joking with my earlier response but I was not. You should take the restaurant job. If you were really destined to be a graphic designer you'd have no difficulty at all making this decision. Work in a restaurant for a while, make some money, figure out what you really want to do with your life, then do it.

Thats terrible reasoning. Everyone has doubts and fears. Just because you have them does not necessarily mean that you are not meant to do what you are doing. It shows that you are taking the time to think this decision through and not make a gut reaction.
