Not sure why anyone still think that Apple is hacked. It's Quanta that got hacked. Even if there's someone paid the hacker it will be Quanta, not Apple, since it will be Quanta responsability for Apple data to be leaked.

Because the data is most valuable to Apple. Even after the data is leaked, Quanta will still get business from Dell, HP, Acer, and countless others. It's Apple's manufacturing secrets that are leaked.

I think disrupting the oil pipeline was a step too far for these guys. There had been a steady dribble of these ransomware news all these years without much action, but once they threatened the United States economy as a whole, then looks like the gloves came off.

Now only thing to watch geo-politically is whether Poland will honor the extradition request or whether they will face pressure from their larger neighbor in Russia to stall/ release this guy.

If you had just stolen the schematics and didn't attempt to extort Apple you probably wouldn't be in this mess.
Serves him right.

Don't mess with Apple. Almost as dangerous as messing with the Coca Cola Company, because "you're going to have to answer to the Coca Cola Company."

Dare I say government agencies are just as dangerous and sophisticated as those criminals, or more than likely way more powerful?

Considering teh sources they can through at it as well as political influence I'd say it's not a level playing field if a government decides to go after them.

Usually just random valuation and vague claimed damage as long as Apple can get away with it.

I think it was money and stuff he owned they took from him; which is what really hurts because if he has no money he has no friends and becomes a liability that may give someone up to get a lesser charge.

Yeah like Dell, HP or Acer will want to deal with Quanta if Quanta won't take responsibility for their actions. ? I'm not sure what world some of you living in.

Of course Apple will say "Oh you're hacked. Don't worry though we will pay for it".. No, it will be "You got our data hacked. Deal with it quick and fast!"

I'd imagine things like this even written explicitly in the contracts.

Dell, HP, and Acer designs are hardly noteworthy. Heck, many of them rely on ODMs like Quanta to do the engineering work in the first place because they want to save money.

"Quanta leaks the upcoming Alder Lake motherboard for Dell XPS!" -Who cares?

Apple will pay the ransom, but will punish Quanta by switching orders to Foxconn, Compal, and Wistron.

It's not about design. It's about responsibility. No one will hire one who never take responsibility for their actions. Maybe you will but not people in real world.

Everything for a business comes down to a dollar figure. The risk management team at Dell, HP, Acer, etc. will determine that the risk of being hacked at Wistron, Foxconn, and Compal is equal to Quanta. End result is nothing changes. There's theory and then there's reality.

And how is losing one of your main suppliers good?

ODM/OEM is a cut throat low-margin business. Read the rags to riches story of Luxshare and how they went from a cable connector supplier to helping Apple design AirPods and now assembles iPhones and mini LED displays for Apple.

The responsibility of any manufactures will not be restricted to being hacked, but everything. When you show yourself to be untrustworthy be prepare to be left alone.

Quanta wouldn't dare to say to Apple "Hey our servers are hacked but the hackers like to deal with you.. so good luck!"

I don't think you know how the real world works.

Still, having more suppliers is still better than less. More choices are always better.

Ok, he got what he deserved.

On the other hand, why aren't schematics included with a purchase of the hardware? They should be.

Yeah, but what ‘assets’? As in…valuables, belongings…ect.
Maybe it means that the group makes it living doing this kind of stuff, they just got caught this time

Remember some time back it was said in the news that these ransom ware viruses causes computers to lock up and if you play some amount of money it unlocks? Well $50 to $1,000 or whatever the amount per computers adds up. I remember reading that many people just pay it because the hassle is not worth it.

The not reported ransom payments are probably why the guy has so much cash. Also…he might be a government back operator as we will never really know.

Scary stuff going on these days..

The targeting of REvil by the US government, which led to this arrest, was surely much more because of the attack by DarkSide (a likely REvil offshoot) on the Colonial Pipeline (which caused enormous disruptions in gas supplies on the east coast) than because of the industrial espionage against Apple.

As much as I dislike these dudes for their actions, instead of throwing them in prison I would consider hiring them, if I could afford the money to keep'em loyal.
Sure, they are "thieves", but highly knowledgeable. They have broken into stuff that should be a lot better protected. The pipeline should never, ever have been so "easy" to get to, that is just scary! What other critical infrastructure has sh*t security?
This is why bug bounty programs need to really pay off, Apple! Make these a**holes work _for_ you, not against you.
