I purchased the domain "facebookmarketplace.com" about a year ago on a random whim for $5, and surprise that it was available.

About a month ago, a small company contacted me saying they were interested in purchasing my name, since I had not done anything with it. After hours of research, talking to a lawyer, posting on forums - I got the overall advice that because it had the word "facebook" in it, that the site would not be worth what it normally would be (due to the extremely valuable keywords "facebook" "marketplace").

I heard plenty of stories about people having domains even as harmless as "mikeonfacebook.com" getting cease & desist letters from facebook and getting shut down.

So bottom line, I took the majority of the internet's advice, as well as this lawyer (not sure how much he really knew on the specific laws regarding the power of FB and it's infringement laws) and sold it to the for $1,400.

Sweet. Made $1,400 for doing nothing. I'm 21. But that's ****ing pocket change still.... now I have seen why they wanted the domain from me.... it is just being used to forward to http://www.oodle.com/ which is a major company..... so they probably sold it for wayyyyy more to them and I feel like I just got ****ed I feel like crying. I knew I should of held onto it.

After all, "paypalsucks.com" and many sites like that have been in operation for years.

    I SHOULDN'T OF TAKEN THE INTERNET'S ADVICE ****.

IN a selfish way I am hoping that Facebook takes that away from them, I really really really do. Did I **** up or what?

Does Oodle.com have the right to own my domain that was sold to them? I feel like they are still breaking infridgement laws because they are using facebook's name to make a profit... right?? Im just freaking out a but.

If the Internet's advice didn't help you the first time around, why would it help you now?

I'll stick to what I said in the other thread....don't kick yourself over it.

I always kind of wonder if after my death something I create as an artist that is seemingly worth very little now and sold very cheaply should become worth millions, but am I underselling myself? Nope I am setting the initial price for my services--whatever happens after it leaves my possession is not up to me nor should I care. Congratulate yourself you made a couple grand from practically nothing.

Sounds like the OP has enough of a drug problem...

he's having a "breakdown" over making a $1395 profit for doing nothing...that's moronic.

You clearly have LOW expectations for yourself in life.... I'm just a 21 year student but even I recognize $1,395 might as well be nothing in the context of what is going on here. I can blow a G in one weekend so easily, look at the bigger picture. Sure it's some free petty money, but in my view, I only LOST money here, I didn't gain ****ing anything. These opportunities do not present themselves anymore on the internet, at least extremely rarely. And I had it. I'm just being realistic, because I wanted instant gratification and because I listened to the majority of a bunch of ****ing online people posting on forums........

And to that poster PS yeah i pop pills everyday. Prescribed. For now that is how it is. People have ****ing issues in this stress filled, ****ed up world... I may have substance issues, but I can almost promise you I've balled out, traveled to more VIP events around the world, been to more countries, lived more lavishly and you can pick up my book at sometime relatively soon when I get around to getting it published.

Once again, I AM A ****ING IDIOT. LEARN FROM ME PLEASE.

Let's take the most played out topic possible... FB.... of course, on an ENTIRELY, INCOMPARABLY different level - if Mark had made slightly decisions, he would of ended up being another kid who made a couple hundred thousand from monetization or selling out, rather than being the youngest billionaire in the world....

Just saying you can be satisfied with what you get, working that desk job, just doing your thing, getting by.. or you can think outside the box and utilize creativity, skill, luck and... make the right decisions and be poppin bottles

You lost this opportunity. Complaining at us isn't going to get you any closer to the next one.

Isn't the solution obvious? Go buy a bunch more $5 domains, and hope it happens again. :)

Someone has some issues. Maybe you could have made more, maybe you couldn't. You'll never know. So why sit here and get all freakin' crazy angry?

Who's adrian? That's what is listed as the registrant for that URL. If that's you, then it hasn't been changed. If it's who owns it now, I doubt it's a large company with a registered name of "adrian".

Wow...arrogant much? After acting like that, I don't care what you do or what you did with your domain. Tell us how many countries, just out of curiosity.

You made $1400 for basically doing nothing. Be happy with that. You just made more money than many people in the world make in a year.

My dad is in the entertainment industry aka film festivals, premiers, etc aka travel .

It's one thing to get over a girl.... which I'll probably be breaking up with my girlfriend too cause I can't take the additional stress she causes me.. but anyways, bitches come and go, $$ over bitches, we should all know that... even if it hurts for a bit.

This is serious and I don't know how I am gona wake up to it tomorrow.

The correct answer would be to accept what happened and move on and work hard to achieve something that has an even more viable outcome... and finish school etc.... but I have a feeling this is going to mess with my head for a long time.

PROPS to them for cleverly ****ing over someone young with little experience in domain value and the complexity of laws concerning trademarks. They won. I lost.

And no, I can tell myself in all honestly right now, that there will never be another domain I come across that is still available to buy for $5, that ends up turning into and owned by OODLE INC / FACEBOOK from me for $1400........... About 10% of the people I talked to (in real life and on forums) said not to sell.... Who would of known? Wait, I should of.

I just needed to confirm that I did make a huge mistake, so eventually, perhaps, I'll be able to accept that.. thanks..

Selling the domain for 1400 is the least of your problems.
Seriously, you sound like you need help. Major help.

Agreed. See a therapist, stat. You seem to have some real anger management issues over truly trivial things. I've never seen this kind of outburst over such a tiny issue.

This is not serious. You don't know how you're going to wake up in the morning? Seriously??? Over selling a domain name and making $1400 doing jack $#!+? Did you think you were going to retire from this or something? Man....weird. I hope this is a joke.

I'd say you already got a lot more than you earned, so be happy with that and move on.

You made a decent chunk of change for what was basically nothing. Kicking yourself for not being more greedy isn't going to change anything. Let it go. Besides, if you had tried to pull for more you may have lost out completely with a cease and desist order. It's happened exactly that way before for other domainsquatters.

    Who cares?

That girl is about to be the luckiest girl around if you do leave her. Hopefully she can see through whatever BS facade you have because if I were your girl I'd walk, no run, away fast.
Money over bitches? Please! Enjoy single life.
*adds you to my buddy list* I bet you do wake up, it's not serious, you do however need to seek professional help.
No, the mature response would be to look at how you made a $1395 profit for domain squatting. Quite frankly I am surprised to see that you're a 21 year old male.

Little experience? You squatted on a domain thinking you were far more clever than the next guy. You weren't and yet you were. You made over a grand for buying a $5.00 domain one night.

No one forced you to sell and what kind of person goes onto an internet forum looking for serious advice to something that is obviously a big deal (to you)? I venture to guess that no one sees this as being as serious of an issue as you do. Hence the professional help recommendation. If the outcome of this is this bad for you and it's become this magnified then I personally question your ability to simply function in the real world.

If you cannot see how buying something for $5.00 and earning $1395 from it with no effort on your part to market the domain or attempt to sell to a higher bidder as being a good thing then I question what you consider to be "good". And at 21, if you go through "a G" in a weekend then I can see how $1395 is not a lot of money to you. To me it's $1395 money to tuck away for a rainy day. To me you're just greedy and you clearly have zero ability to make anything more than a rash decision.

You made a major mistake. This will be the beginning of the domino effect for you as this has only set off the path of future mistakes that will continue to cause immeasurable failures in your life.

    Happy now?

So what, that's capitalism. Besides there was no guarantee you could have sold it for more. why obsess over what could have been. You made a cool 1,400 bucks and that's nothing to cry over.

You made a HUGE profit. Be happy.
If you continue to obsess over this, you will become more miserable the rest of your life. Look forward, not back, like this guy:
