i'm a little bit new to mac ( 2 Macbook pro years) and i have a question for you guys that had been around for more time:

it's usual see this kind of rejecting of a new design on a macbook pro? when the intel one was launch did someone prefered the old one?(design question only)

what i am trying to find out is that threads like this one are afraid of change or apple's messing up with the best design ever on a macbook pro(last one).

this thing is affecting the all line: imacs are uglier (black apple logo?come on)vs g4-best ever

should this downgade design affect mac pro too? i'm already imagining mac pro case all round with black glass on the side.

please apple designers - JUST DON'T MESS WITH PERFECTION. DON'T BE PC DESIGNERS WITH MACKINTOSH INSIDE

Actually, I went to the Apple store and spent quite a bit of time playing with it in person and to me it is even uglier in person than in the pictures. Especially the cheap feeling plastic keys and the cheesy black display bezel. This is just my opinion and I am not a designer or expert, but I know ugly and cheaper build quality when I see it. I can't believe Apple did this downgrade to the MBP and expect to charge the same money for it.

I don't want to disappoint you and I don't know it for sure but from the discussions i found it seems the keys on the "old" MBP are just painted plastic (as well as some other parts). Here's an example: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/530492/

If this is true then the keys on the new MBP may just "feel cheap" to you because they're not painted silver ;)

I personally don't understand how you can come to the conclusion the new one is ugly. The new one has made the old model seem dated, Screws, joints, plastic, the fit etc. Looks like a ....dare I say it, PC.

If you don't like the black, just paint it ;)

and you know what? i'm loving my 2 year macbook pro more everyday, today i cleaned it and i bought it a new case. w'm beeing more careful with it too. i don't to lose it at all. after all it's a discontinued Milo Venus (computer version).

simplicity, continuaty, connection of materials, please bring back our macbook pro. let this just be a fashion.....

Well you certainly didn't disappoint me as I personally own the previous MBP, I assure you because the keys are indeed aluminum and not plastic. That thread link you had in your response was a joke in regard to any credible info on this, those people didn't even own a MBP except for one who was obviously disagreeing with the others. Come on just go to a real MBP and feel it for yourself its not hard to feel the quality of the aluminum. Definitely not cheap plastic like the new ones are.

I'm not that keen on the new MacBooks that I agree with the comments that they've become Dell-like instead of Apple-like.

Apple should have left the keys and the bezel in aluminium colouring matching the rest of the laptop enclosure like the old MBP that I think the use of black in some parts makes the new laptops look tacky like PC laptops.

The new Aluminium MacBook looks almost identical to the updated MBP so does anyone thinks this really should be the 13" MacBook Pro replacing the old 12" PowerBook?

If they had that down as the 13" MBP that Apple should retain and continue the previous black and white versions purely for the MacBook line keeping prices low for students and buyers on a budget that the new Alu MacBook is almost ridiculously expensive as the 15" MBP which I believe this really should be branded as the 13" MBP!

MacBook: white or black
MacBook Pro: 13", 15" and 17"

sounds more logical instead of this

MacBook: white or "premium" Aluminium
MacBook Pro: 15" and 17"

The new ones make the old MacBook Pro's look outdated. Anybody who puts them side by side in person who doesn't think the same is just trying to make themselves feel better for owning the old one. Let's see why.

-no plastic ring around the keyboard plate which I've always thought looked bad
-no mechanical latch which I also thought looked bad
-no screws showing

Plus it's much more sturdy then the old Pro which would flex when you touched it. The only argument you people are making is the use of black but to me even that makes the old Pro look boring. The Air would probably also look better with the black around the screen to hide the camera.

found them sort of flashy and cheap looking.

They remind me of a cheap Asus with those glassy looking screens and black trim around the screen.
Haven't seen them yet, but expect to have a similar reaction.

The "Bling" look seems to be what all manufacturers are going for these days. Guess it must sell.

Gone are the days when the simplicity of the white iMac or the aluminum MBP or the ultra clean looking ACDs defined Apple's aesthetic. The current iMacs and MacBook Pros and the new display are a much more "hey look at me!" look that shouts out to the passerby with flash and contrast. The previous generation were so subtle and gorgeous that their elegance stopped many of us dead in our tracks. I respect others' differing opinions, but for me the Mac line has veered toward the garish.
Agree.

Everything seems to focus on eye candy these days. About 3-4 years ago, I saw this coming based upon what I saw being offered in Japan.

This is one of the few times that I am glad to have an old version of a particular model.

The new MB/MBPs have some nice construction ideas. I do like the idea of a one piece construction, per se, and the new battery/HD compartment. However, the black rim around the display and the chiclet keyboard are turn-offs for me. And the lack of a matte screen option is a no-go.

Hopefully Apple will consider a matte screen option in the future.

Ugliest thing Apple came out with since the clam shell. At least that thing had a handle.

The bezel is approx 1" thick and looks even bigger black. The antenna looks like cheap plastic. The chiclet keyboards bad enough, but the black keys are gross. The one thing I hated about my 667MZ powerbook.

yuck yuck yuck

Just returned the new MBP, couldn't be happier to get rid of that abomination! I didn't have to eat the restocking fee either because the screen dimming key was hyper-sensitive (all you have to do is lightly touch the surface and it'll register a hit), so after a little back and forth with the people at the "genius" bar (I'm sorry but I always found that to be the stupidest name ever) I was able to get all of my money back.

I love my "old" MBP (ordered the same say I bought the new MBP) so much I just wanna hug it.

Some thoughts: I actually don't hate the looks of the new MBP as much as some others might, but what I hated was the overall downgrade in quality and sophistication of the product. It's blatantly obvious that Apple reduced their cost tremendously by going with the new uniform body enclosure and applying the same technique to both MBs and MBPs, but they made no significant upgrades and kept charging the same prices and at the same time wants customers to faithfully believe in their marketing campaign.

Being a car fanatic, this move reminds of exactly what Mercedes did in 1992 when their board made a decision that their cars were "needlessly over-engineered", so they began saving money and raising profits by cutting corners. The end result? In 1992 Mercedes was 1st in JD Powers' customer satisfaction survey, in 2002 they were 9 places from the bottom.

When the leaders of a business start getting greedy, it shows. It's not always obvious, but look past the plume of smoke they're blowing into your face, and the truth is staring at you right in the eye.

Depends on the person...it will never be such that 100% of people "prefer" the new design. But truth is, if you don't like it, why don't you try and come up with a better design that 100% of people prefer? Unless you can do that, your point of view is entirely subjective.

Personally, the new MacBook design is good, but as a MacBook Pro, I was hoping for a matte screen option, and I'm not crazy about the black border - I'd rather the screen go all the way to the edge.

After spending a lot of time with MacBooks and MacBook Pros today, I definitely think they're both gorgeous.

The Pro is an absolutely beautiful machine.

I own a first generation MBP (Rev.B), 2 1/2 years old, my primary working machine, and no, i can not say for sure that the keys are aluminium and not just well-fabricated plastic. And all the info I did find on the net was people saying it was painted plastic. I have yet to find a quote where it says they're not. So I really dont know.

I don't think one can be sure about that just by how they "feel".

Let me add two more quotes from the apple forums:

No, plastic keys painted to look like aluminium is Dellness. I'm glad Apple got over that. Raw materials look so much better. I love the real black plastic against the real aluminium.

The lack of FireWire, however, is certainly Dellness.

The third point is a matter of taste, but i totally agree with n-q that the silver keys matched far better the alu-case then the cheap plastics of the new model (although i always had to chew on the fact that the silver keys were made of plastics too, after all).

Don't get me wrong. I love my MBP (and the keyboard), im in no way trying to downgrade the old MBP here, it's the best and most beautiful notebook i've ever had. I just don't agree with the statement that the new ones look "cheap and ugly".

As a piece of engineering, it's incredible. Especially when you see it next to the old Macbook Pro. The case is perfect....

The only issue is the black, it's not in any way subtle so you could say it's lost a bit of 'class' and got louder, more vulgar and looks like a lot of other laptops.

I think it might have made more sense for the Pro version to remain the same color.

yeah I think its uglier

funnily enough, I think the Macbook is much better. I think the size difference of less aluminum makes the black work better. But with the MBP its gets uglier.

I wanted to buy one of these but I really don't like the design and I don't truly need it and its expensive - I would have thought after the classic design of the whole MBP, it would have been much better

Its not the same but at least you can get the idea:

(black border screen, black keyboard).
