For years, Apple has been looking at ways to bring manufacturing back to the US. I believe automation is the key, not taxes.

Tax incentives may not be enough to offset the increase in labor to make products here, but more automation and fewer workers might make it feasible. In that case, how does a US manufacturing plant with few jobs and no taxes benefit the US economy?

It's a great idea. Hopefully they can do it eventually. Trump is right though - bring jobs here so not as many people are unemployed. They'll have money to spend and the economy improves.

Sure, maybe some folks won't want to do that type of work, but hopefully people will get any job they can instead of sitting on their butts and waiting for a handout.

Bringing manufacturing back here isn't cut and dry, but at least it's a start which I think is great.

I'm Canadian and here in Ontario, we have a Liberal government which has increased electricity prices so bad that it's difficult for small businesses to operate. The govt is only now starting to backtrack because they realize people are ticked off so votes are going out the door. Which is ironic because during their campaign they touted how they would make it easy for businesses to work in Ontario.....which they haven't because they are directing hurting the expense bottom line.

So having a soon-to-be-president saying he wants to work directly with 1 of the biggest companies around is refreshing.

Cheers,
Keebler

Most American people are no longer used to work on factories. Most people hate their jobs too, regardless of what it is they do.
Just drive to a McDonald's, or Walmart's customer service and you'll be treated like crap.
Or think about several GM vehicles that had issues with their sunroof (like mine) that were caused by an idiot at the assembly line who forgot to puncture the drainage connectors. Not even the dealer could figure it out. I had to do it myself.

As much as some people hate Trump there is no way you can say this is a bad thing to bring jobs and manufacturing back to the US.

Actually, there are many, many downsides to it...which is a big part of the reason it was outsourced in the first place. But hey, why make it complicated when it is much easier to just say "I'll bring jobs back, vote for me!"

Cook celebrated that they were making mac pros here. They celebrate designing things in California. It'll be hard for him to avoid bad PR dealing with Trump on this.

Why would it lead to hyper inflation? Even if there was no growth in production it would help the US economy a great deal.

Just theorizing. Assume total cost will be higher even with incentives and potentially stronger dollar would lead to a devalued product when exporting. Not saying I know all this to be true. I just don't think it's as simple as more US production = better for US economy.

I'm not an American. Is it typical that a president elect starts working even before in office? He has also met with the Mexican president many months ago. I think it's quite extraordinary, but I could be wrong.
They typically announce appointees well in advance, usually starting with controlled leaks to gauge public reactions (for example, so that they can "walk back" if there's significant push-back). There's precedent for it going back decades now.

Won't happen for at least 10 years and even if it does these types of jobs are for Robotics, no longer done by humans. So there's little jobs to be gained from this transition. Just smoke and mirrors, put Made in USA on the product and suddenly we are great again.. please.. If I was Apple I wouldn't even bother, tax break?? Seriously? Cook and his team claim they pay their normal fair share of taxes.. oh wait.. didn't they get busted for not paying correctly (overseas)?? This whole thing makes no sense anyway. The only way to get jobs here is to go back to innovation, we need to invent something new.. or have some company like Apple invent something new.. then start with that product, make it here in house from the ground up and that's where your jobs will be. You can't get jobs from old technologies.. even the iPhone by the time it would be moved to be all in house in the USA will be old. It's the excitement of the innovation that should drive us to do great things. Sadly that was lost long ago to people who were all about greed.. as if 10billion wasn't enough already.. shoot for 100 and put people out of work.. zero innovation, zero drive to explore...
