It is a dodgy purchase, but I did it once and literally *just* did it again from the same seller, angelic88. No problems the first time around, hopefully none now.

Wow, hindsight is such a wonderful thing. Why didn't you start telling this earlier when everybody recommended buying AppleCare of Ebay?

I never asked anyone to feel sorry for me.

Common sense told you not to buy AC on Ebay and you did not listen. I could have bought this on Ebay, but I thought it looked like a scam, that's why I didn't. It's not hindsight, it's common sense.
And Nimoz, stop crying like a baby and blaming Apple. Apple is asking for reasonable things you should have. AppleCare comes with a code and a box with a serial number on it. If your seller only gave you the code, it is your problem, not Apple's. It is that simple. If you disagree, just sue Apple and see how they laugh in your face.

1) People NORMALLY don't keep the boxes of things they purchase.

2) Apple shouldn't require this information as this is very common.

3) And no one is crying like a little baby kid. When it shows the warranty on the laptop on their site, there should be NO QUESTIONS ASKED and it should just be moved.

Sorry my friend, I beg to differ!

Here in Europe you can by a car, the same car for amount X€ from a seller in Germany and for an amount X€-Y€ from a seller abroad, say Denmark.
This is because car companies tend to set their prices differently in each country. It is still the same car and a lot of people buy their cars this way.

If you go to a supermarket and they sell product X in a fancy boxing and the same product without the fancy boxing for 10$ less. What does common sense tell you here?

Up to the point when I received the email from Apple there was not a single testimony to be found that the codes sold on Ebay where not the real thing. I guess many people (including myself) never knew that the code alone is not the product (at least by Apples definition).

I choose to let people know this fact, so that they can make their own decisions. But why do I tell you this. You obviously ALWAYS make the right decisions in your life purely by relying on 'common sense'

I used to work as an authorized reseller and Apple would give us massive discounts on bulk computer purchases when we purchased boxed versions of AppleCare with each system. For example, lets say the retail of a computer was $1,500, instead of the typical 6-8% discount - Apple would give us 22 - 28% discounts. This allowed us to resell the AppleCares at 50% discounts or provide them free with any computer purchase.

We also facilitated the sale of AppleCare "codes" to various IT departments. These codes were purchased in bulk from Apple and arrived electronically (never arrived with boxes). Perhaps some of the codes being resold on eBay are of such variety? Now this all happened over 5 years ago so can't say if its the same now

It's been a bit since I've read the Apple terms of service for Applecare, but I don't believe it requires people to keep the box and receipt. If they really are planning to require people to keep that kind of stuff then they need to update their policies to state such a requirement.

Well they asked for it.

I bought AppleCare off eBay and it registered fine. Now I'll be selling my MacBook on eBay, but I've only had AppleCare for a few days. First, how would I go about transfering the AppleCare to the new owner? Second, what if Apple emails me a month later saying it's not valid? What then?

Well if Apple e-mails you months later telling you that the AC is not valid, then that's not your problem now, its the new owners.

You may transfer this Plan to a new owner of the Covered Equipment by sending, faxing or e-mailing notice of transfer to Apple Inc., ATTN: Agreement Administration, MS: 217AC, 2511 Laguna Blvd, Elk Grove, CA 95758, U.S., fax number 916-399-7337 or agmts_transfer@apple.com, respectively. You must provide the Plan Agreement Number, the serial numbers of the Covered Equipment being transferred, proof of purchase of the Plan, and the name, address, telephone number and email address of the new owner.

I've purchased three applecares on ebay (2 for iphones and 1 for my mac pro). My mac pro had a lightening hit that ruined the ethernet port (forgot that my modem was plugged into the wall outlet not the surge protector). Had the $800 logic board replaced free with the applecare.

Now to wait for Music Producer's questions on this :) This thread has been quite informative and its good to see interaction between people who know their stuff.

Also is your PayPal account linked to your credit card or directly to your bank account? Because if its your Credit Card then you will be protected.

That's true - I had two purchases go bad on eBay and craigslist. Calling Visa and getting the money refunded was surprisingly easy. They asked me to fax all of my email transactions with the sellers, and the results of the PayPal disputes as well. My money was refunded within a week or so.

Wow. I just purchased an AppleCare protection plan from app.holdings on ebay. I then started to read over 12,000 feedbacks on him. It seems that there are some negative feedbacks on him about this.

Then I came to good old MacRumors, and the warning bells went off.
He hasn't sent me the code yet, so I sent him a question asking for a refund of the price. I'll just go and buy the policy from the Apple Store.

I just checked my ebay history, and it looks like I bought my registration for my MBP from app.holdings... uh oh.

It shows up as verified on Apple's website, and when I phone them they tell me it's valid.

I think from now on it's only at Apple Store for Apple Care plans.

I have always bought applecare of eBay without an issue,. I recently had a whole macbook repaired even AFTER applecare expired. They gave me a 90day extension.

I recently purchased and bought applecare for my appletv.

All is good so far.

So if you buy a sealed, boxed Applecare from Ebay you should be alright? They are marginally more expensive than the email codes, but does that give complete peace of mind or could Apple still demand to see a receipt?

Hmm, this has put me off from buying applecare. Problem is my 1 year warranty expires in october, and buying applecare from apple would cost as much as selling my computer and buying a brand new from apple, lol.

Without the receipt it is kind of useless in case Apple investigates it. Though supposedly it reduces the chance of the code being canceled by the seller.

Amazon and LA Computer Company Inc. are both Apple Authorized Resellers and sell AppleCare at a discount from full Apple retail price albeit not as much of a discount as eBay.

I don't understand this thread.

I have purchased multiple applecare warranties through eBay. Macbook, iphone, Mac Pro, MacBoook Pro, Cinema Display, Etc. I have never had a problem. I currently got into the market of buying applecare warranties in bulk and selling them locally and on Craigslist. i buy the warranties from the people that i met on eBay who give volume discounts.

So far under warranty i have had the top case on the MacBook replaced, an entire 17" Mac Book Pro replaced and upgraded to unibody (i was even asked where i got the applecare and i said eBay), and two replacement Cinema Displays.

So please not everyone out there is trying to screw you. I feel as though you had a little bit of bad luck but you are assaulting these peoples businesses.

If someone paid for something, got a code, registered it, and then was told that they bought nothing with it with no recourse to the seller or to Apple, then yes, that is a lot more than a little bit of bad luck.

If you sold me a bad code and kept my money, you can bet I'd try to assault your business.
