Personally I have had a few drinks, but what I do when I'm out is try to recall th same feelings and emotions I was having while I was drinking and try to bring them out when I'm NOT drinking. It feels pretty much the same, and it works really well for me.

It's funny though. A guy says "dont drink and have fun!" and the drinkers here come out in droves to say that that's wrong, in their gentlest way though. Like in that "whats your favourite cigarette brand?" that was just stock full of people shouting "DONT SMOKE!" and that.

If you don't drink, good on ya. Think Differently and that. Plus you can say you never had a drink, even though it was offered down every road you walked. You never gave in and you probably have a lot more willpower than somebody who did drink. Congrats. You're a strong person.
You could apply that to many things in life. You could be celebate because love, lust and sex cause so many problems in the world - like murder, disease, mental pain, fighting. But I'd say you'd be missing out on something if you avoided it because it can cause problems for some people.

But heh, if it makes you feel good about yourself go for it.

Anyone fancy a pint?

...Well I was wondering who else on here does NOT drink and still has TONS of fun with their drinking/non drinking friends?
What I don't like is how this thread has been hijacked by a bunch of folks preaching to the non-drinkers that it's okay and perfectly healthy to have a drink or two socially and in moderation.

This thread was created and designed for those that do NOT drink, it was not created for those that do. Nor do I believe it was the intent of the thread creator to have this turn in to a drinkers vs. non-drinkers.

I don't drink and have very little tolerance for those that do, this is because I have seen WAY too much destruction in my life and family directly caused by drinking.

That said, I do have a TON of fun not drinking! I rarely go out to clubs and bars though because I can't stand being around drunk people. But my friends and I still have a great time not drinking, and I believe we're better for it. I do have friends that drink but when we hang out they don't drink, simple as that.

So who else has fun NOT drinking? :D

if you are a person who does not drink, and then goes out to the bar with friends, what drink would you order (non-alcholic)?

I'm underage, so ive never been to a bar. And I do not plan on drinking. So what would I get when the time comes when my friends and I go to the bar?

Virgin drinks or soda always work for me. Bars always have soda on tap. Virgin margaritas and virgin Daquiris are good, too. I was once at a bar where the bartender had a whole book of different virgin drinks. He gave it to me when I told him I wasn't drinking alcohol and I just went through and ordered what I thought sounded good.

Nor do I but I did think the subject of the thread was to encourage some discussion over it. It wouldn't be much of a discussion if everyone just said 'me too'. I don't think any of the 'drinkers' have denied that you can have fun but equally, some of the early posts did seem to hint that all 'drinkers' were were out to get completely legless at every opportunity. I don't think it's unfair to those who drink in moderation to point out that we shouldn't all be tarred with the 'drink til paralytic' brush.

Not me, Hic! , we all might as well live in a bubble, life is an experience to be experienced, which I have and have no regrets. ;)

I didn't stop me either. That video was shot around the beginning of my alcoholistic adventures... and I'm still going strong.

Can I revise that statement to say that 'drinking in moderation isn't bad for you'? I agree that if you drink enough that you aren't fully aware of what you are doing, then it can be bad for you. But a couple of glasses a couple of times a week isn't going to turn the average punter into a social reprobate.

People can die, commit murder, steal and fight whilst sober too.

If 'moderation' means 'not getting drunk', then yes.

Even Jesus drank wine.

Yeah me too (my 18th birthday the only time I did a multi coloured yawn) I've drank shed loads but I've also given up drink for years, unfortunately I substituted it for other (myriad) things, so I think it's safer for me to just have a drink or three with my friends, it kind of spices things up without breaking the law and I'm not only talking about illegal substances.

The only thing I've really noticed about drinking is that you think the guy/girl who isn't drinking is more boring than the people who are and on the other side people who drink are an absolute pain in the butt (my view).

I've only had a wee bit o' drink in my life. (I'm only 17)

At a gig, some guy gave us the rest of his bottle of wine to the cellist and I.
To be polite, I just took a sip.
I started playing REALLY LOUD.

like "Kt, you know there are more dynamics than tearing into your viola, playing fortissimo" loud.
If that happened from just a SIP, imagine what a lot would do to me.

After a glass of wine, I'd probably wake up in Tijuana, wearing men's clothing or something.

I just can't hold it.

So, I won't drink now, and probably not much in the future.
I want to remember having a good time. :p

WHICH REMINDS ME AND PUTS ME OFF ON A TANGENT ABOUT ALL THE DRUG USE AND DRINKING IN MY SYMPHONY... but I won't go into that, lest I rant on for pages about how dumb they are.
*holds tongue*

I have a sneaky suspicion that people who say they don't remember what they did the night before are simply ashamed of what they did and don't want to have to defend themselves. I don't have that problem, and amazingly I never wake up forgetting what I did the night before, even though on occasion I wish I could.

I usually remember what I did but often I will pretend that I have no idea what happened. It's a lot easier than having to explain some things. And often my friends will just have a giggle with each other but not actually discuss it with me which I appreciate.

I find I'll remember a big night but it won't last in my memory for as long. That fuzzyness that old memories seem to accumulate comes on quicker if I've been drinking.

Of course, I sometimes have completely no idea what happened on some of my larger nights...

As I was raised I lived in Holland for two years and went to Italy every other summer for months at a time because half our family is Italian.

As such I was raised with a lot of Italian values of drinking as well.

One thing everybody is forgetting is that drinking is a lot cheaper form of entertainment than just about anything else out there. I'm not even going to comment on whether American attitudes towards drinking are any better or worse than European, Asian, Arab, or otherwise...in college I was pretty broke, and splitting a case of beer with friends ($5) was cheaper even than seeing a movie ($9) -- and kept me entertained all night.

I think that helps explains why Americans don't drink like Europeans. (Of course, GFLPraxis, you're right that the asinine laws have a lot to do with it as well.)

My biggest peeve about drinking is those who talk about it too much. Either they're bragging about how they never drink because they're too good for it, or they're bragging how much and how often they drink to sell themselves as cooler than they actually are. Both are obnoxious. Just do what you enjoy as long as you're not harming others or yourself -- and I also suggest experimenting at least a little. If you're not going to drink, at least know why you're not doing it.

I totally agree with everything you say, especially the cheap-ness. Living in a true college town where there is not much to do but drink. A case of 30 beers cost $13 out here and a movie cost about 8. Split the case with 3 other people thats about $4.30 per person. With that being said, it doesnt mean I drink all the time. I do admit that when I do drink, it is to get drunk but not drunk to the point where I black out/forget the night. But thats just me.

Good on anyone who doesn't drink and still has fun. I frequently don't drink and have fun, but equally frequently do and do also (I guess I'm just a FUN guy :p ). All power to them that don't, but don't expect me to shut up on the topic just because i'm not in the club - it's an open forum.

I don't think it's wrong to not drink, i'd just rather people did because it means i'll be able to hold onto this job and i'm too lazy to go look for a less evil one (and i really like the staff discounts).

OMG, so I was eating supper and I was out of red wine. So I opened my first bottle of merlot. Let me tell ya, with eggs and corn it's not that good. Anyway, I had some cake left from the ole birthday and with the merlot - whoa. I don't know why but the sugary taste in my mouth was all the merlot needed to taste better.

Just thought I'd share :p

Been teetotal for 25 years, medical reasons...

I can remember every great night I ever had, all the way through college, and touring with the bands, the parties. Everything.

Friends will occasionally ask me what happened at a particular event because they can't remember....

I do...;) :D

I see no contradiction between teetotalism and the quote in my sig...

Seriously. Moderation is just like, a way for the government to control us, you know? Like, they all want us to be moderate and so we don't like, throw over the government with our peace bombs.

Man.

(faint sound of tambourines ... heavy smell of pot ...)

Sorry.

There's been this Deadhead substitute teacher in the teacher's lounge all week going on and on about how Coca-Cola drivers aren't unionized. I had to get it out of my system.

Man.
