That said, I also don't want to settle for a Core 2 Duo processor, so my current plan is to wait until tomorrow to see for the last time if the MBPs get a refresh, and if they don't I'm going to pony up for the base 15-inch model.

That seems to fairly well give you a straightforward answer to buy now or wait.

If you are going to keep the computer for 5+ years you probably will think, at some point down the road, "if only I had waited till the nextmost recent..."

Take this for what it's worth (and the skeptics are going to trash this comment, which is fine)... but updates are close. No, I can't say how I know. :)

Having said that, buy when you need to buy. I bought right before an update once, knowing it was coming. I was going away on an extended trip and needed the new machine right away. I was a little pissed when the new models were released a few weeks later, but I'm still using that same machine almost 4 years later if that helps at all.

Having said that, if there is no imminent rush to buy (i.e. you can limp that thing along a little while longer) I would wait and get the latest and greatest. Buy if you NEED the new machine right now... not just because you WANT it. If you're just getting impatient for a new machine I'd wait. You'll be happier in the long run.

Good luck!

where did you use this computer!!?! Cairo?!?!

It's hard to believe but this is just from regular usage: opening and closing the lid. That's all. I didn't take it to a shot put game or whatever. ;)

Skeptic here. Let's have some dates. And did you make your comment above even after the whole Intel debacle?

Ordered! Base model MacBook Pro 15-inch it is. It'll be here by Friday! Bye-bye, Dell, so long waiting for Sandy Bridge! :D

I'm tough on my equipment ... my last HP made it three years and ...

1. I wore all of the letters off the keys
2. I broke a few keys off the keyboard
3. I broke the original AC adapter and one replacement
4. I wore the black color off the front speaker grille
5. I wore the color off next to the track pad where the wrists rest
6. When I plug in any USB device Windows XP freezes
7. Battery life was down to about 40mins
8. Overheating and fan was loud all the time

But it wasn't a bad machine ... however I did pay 1500 USD for it when it was new HP DV4000 w/128MB X700

I bought a unibody MacBook when they first came out and after 2 years of heavy use and travel:

1. I have a few serious dents in the lid
2. I had a ton of scratches
3. 500+ cycles on the battery (removable) and it still holds 85+% of the original charge
4. I have a creak when I open it ... sounds like the plastic hinge is binding slightly

but it's still a night-and-day quality difference when compared to Dell/HP/Lenovo

and it's been about as close to zero maintenance as possible :)

just my .02 €

About your battery life: you're lucky. I can only get 15 minutes or less of battery out of my 2.5 year old laptop anymore. :D

During that time I had a hard drive failure, a broken power cord and overheating issues (I had to take out the vent and dust it off). I don't even know how it ever managed to overheat in the first place: it has a C2D with no GPU/separate IGP. :/

so simple
ok

buy it now it is good enough for your needs you will have the 1 year apple limited warranty plus option for 3 more years at anytime. I usually have waited to the last day of my one year warranty, so pretty much 4 years. And in that 4 years you are covered. And who knows you may have many repairs or none, but you may end up with a new macbook pro if any major issues. Just buy it now.:apple:

If you're talking about Applecare, it's only 2 year extention. 3 Year extension (for 4 total years) is available for certain educational agreements.

I dont care how hard my life gets im going to wait on the revised MBP.

As of now im using a CR-48 Chrome laptop until i get my baby :)

I'm not a good photographer by any means, but here are some pictures I just took. It's quite dramatic... :p

OMGF that laptop is fubar. If anyone ever needed the rugged unibody it's you!! I assume it's been this way for a while so I say just live with it

I don't want a MBA but the videos about it are amazing. If they bring any of that to the MBP it will be a huge upgrade

If you plan to keep the new laptop for years why not wait and find out if you like the new ones first? I'm waiting and taking the time to put aside extra money for upgrades / accessories while I wait

I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 (basically the 17" version of what you have)..
The future doesn't look too good for me :D

I must say that I do have scratches on the hinge also from simply opening and closing the lid!

couple recommendations if you get the 15"

try to persuade your parents to pay for the hi-res screen, and antiglare if you want and need it.
Hi-res screen is so much nicer than the standard one. i have Hi-Res and Antiglare, i like it a lot more then the glossy Hi-Res or standard glossy.
of course which one is better (antiglare or glossy) is up to everyones needs and likes. you can fit more windows next to each other, two-three pages documents next to each other, which i really like when being in classes :)

When i got my 15" i looked at it this way: get the specs that you cant upgrade in a year or two for far cheaper then current prices.
ie. upgrade ram, HDD, SSD in the next year when prices droped dramatically. And definitely dont upgrade RAM or HDD over apple. its more expensive

NEVER MIND BOUT THE SCREEN, you already order, i didnt see that post

Yup, that's how it started here too. The next step is that the hinges kinda split open on the back and from there it goes downhill. Good luck mate. ;)

I went with standard resolution because that's far enough for me. Besides, I really like the black bezel so that's why I went with glossy. :)

Oh god no

Thanks, you've just given me the push I needed to fully justify purchasing a MBP! :D

How old is that Dell?

Btw: Hey, you're also from Belgium!

Gotcha
Go SSD in like 2 years, then itl be even better :)
;)

I was planning on doing that, and I might also max out the RAM to 8GB this summer. :)

Whoa, I didn't notice! That's kinda cool, meeting a fellow Belgian here! :)
Oh, and seeing how your machine hasn't spontaneously disintegrated yet, you should probably wait for the next refresh. Or be like me and pull the trigger now. I've made my choice, now it's up to you. ;)
