-- Marvin the Paranoid Android

I lived in the UK when the BBC series originally aired, and I *loved* it. I'm really looking forward to the new movie, but part of me is really scared that it might suck. :(

ok- am i the only one excited about this movie? i've been following the news off an on for almost a year now...
No, you're not the only one anxiously awaiting this one. ;)

My wife and I finally got around to seeing "The Incredibles" this past weekend and they showed a trailer for the new "War of the Worlds" movie during the coming attractions. I had not seen that trailer and for the first few seconds there I thought it was for HG2G.

I'm looking forward to it....can't wait to see how they handle all the characters and creatures....:D

D

Anybody here play the text based pc game? That was my introduction and lead me to my local library for the books, maybe i'll go check them out again before the big rush with the movie release!

I can't wait. The book got me through driver's ed class (no reason to pay attention there, and none of my 324 accidents since then have been my fault). I nearly burned down my house (well, no, but I could have) while taping a radio episode that aired while my family and I were a hundred miles away visiting relatives. You see, back in those days, we didn't have WireTap Pro, and I ended up setting my AM/FM/cassette stereo to record the station (when the stereo was turned on) onto a cassette - cassettes were magnetic tapes used to record analog music back before we had fire and the wheel - and then cutting and stripping one wire in an extension cord, attaching the stripped leads to my alarm clock - back then, clocks had what we called "hands" - and tuning it so the leads would touch at the proper time, thus turning on the stereo and taping the program. Stunningly, it worked. The recording started 12 seconds before the program started, and finished a minute it ended.

It has been a long wait, but hopefully, it's worth it!

Wow, thanks for the link, that looks like it! I remember thinking how odd the game was (vs zork or whatever else we had) until my dad informed me that it was based on a book.

I really don't expect anything good out of this. Mr Adams was in negotiations for a movie of H2G2 for approximately the last 20 years of his lif(e). Negotiations almost always broke down over creative differences. With him safely dead, the people who own the rights to the film can do more or less what they want with it. Starship Troopers anyone?

On a related note, does anyone else think Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency would make an awesome movie? Not many people who could pull it off keeping the inherent geekiness, which is of course why I love the book so much.

Ahhhh......Vogon poetry, how it makes me want to jam pens in my ear canals and destroy all the Babel fish in the Galaxy.

Can't wait for this one, although I am a little nervous that it won't live up to expectations. Tom Cruise isn't in it, is he? Good.

Anyone read The Salmon of Doubt, a posthumous collection of various articles, stories, and miscellaneous bits and pieces? Included is a letter Douglas wrote to the producer or director (can't remember which) who was currently on the HHGTTG movie project, subtly complaining about there having been no progress on the development. At the end of said letter, DA asks the guy to call him and proceeds to list his personal phone numbers, numbers of assistants, family, friends, numbers of restaurants and markets he is known to frequent, etc. Two pages of phone numbers at the end of a three paragraph letter. Hysterical stuff.

maybe you didnt have your Babel Fish in correctly?

Might have fell out. :p

As long as this film is not subject to American "preview Screenings" to gauge its success i'll be fine.

The guide should be a little bit weird and not take itself too seriously.

-TO

no your not, iv also been following this from the beginning of production. This was hands down the best book I have ever read. I'm not expecting to much from the movie though

OH - This might surprise a few of you. Ford is being played by someone black.

Mos Def.

I think it will be great like that, (the books all about the unexpected) I just never pictured him black while I was reading it.

Cant wait, :D

this thread has inspired me to pull out my bbc dvd collection of hhg2g. it's lovely and irreverant and geeky and fun.
i highly recommend it.
as for mos def as ford prefect, i think it's going to be great. he's a good actor, and from what i've seen/heard has good comic timing. ford is all about good timing and deadpan delivery.

I can't wait either.
is the robot on the web site marvin?
very different from how I had imagined him, a but I guess that's going to apply to all characters.
anyone thinks that 3PO was a marvin ante-litteram?

edit: how fitting is it that I got the #42 message (and no, it wasn't planned)

BTW, one piece of casting I love for this movie is Alan Rickman as the voice of Marvin... he's got just the right voice for the job. Think Metatron from Dogma saying, "Marvin, can you pick up that piece of paper? Here I am, brain the size of a planet." :)

i just found this amusing...

I'm surprised this is news for a lot of people! Aside from the internet rumors for the past year or two, they have already begun showing small teasers before movies in the cinemas (I personally saw it before The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou).

Anyway, supposedly they are going to combine aspects from the first 4 books. At least one of the rumors I read mentioned the dolphins, which really didn't come into play until So Long, and Thanks For All the Fish!.

I have a bad feeling it's going to suck. With Adams gone, I fear anybody else on this earth who tries to make a movie out of the books, studio or otherwise.

I just found out about this movie today and I thought "Hey, great" and now I'm like you, it's probably not going to be very good. It won't be as good as it could have been or should be. I remember when Douglas Adams died a few years ago I was totally shocked as he was one of my favorite authors. And he was a big fan of the Mac.

I will probably see it opening day. then, of course, you and I can go on these boards and taunt everyone who hasn't.
