The iPhone 3G can't render web pages nearly as fast as it can recieve them with a hypothetical full 3G bandwidth - it doesn't have a fast enough processor or enough RAM to do so.
This might be the case with Safari, specially when a large web page needs to be stored and held in memory, because of the HTML paradigm.

But a web page is not the only data application you use on the phone. Things like audio and video streaming, where data is processed in real time and then disposed of, or user data synchronization, or file transferring, where data is temporarily stored in memory before being written to or being read from disk... all of these things are not memory intensive or processor intensive operations (in terms of data communication speeds). Of course, video and audio encoding/decoding requires some processing power, but the current iPhone's processor is more than capable of handling high quality audio and video.

The OP also said that this would be a reason for not having mobile iChat. And the thing is that at the size of the iPhone's screen, you would only need a couple of hundreds Kbps in order to have a very good quality video chat. I use iChat on my MBP and whenever the link is not good (300 Kbps), the quality is already amazing at full screen.

Apple would. And then next year they will announce the new iPhone IS able to keep up. So go buy it!! :D
I'm going to have to accept that this is sadly true

Anyway, how about putting Wireless-N into the iPhone? How come that isn't being talked about or is something people want?
In fact, besides being able to sync your songs wirelessly, I don't see how such small device would benefit from Wireless-N. But I'm sure someone would find some interesting application to use a very fast link.

It is (which is why pages load *much* faster on a tethered machine where the rendering is being done by your computer instead)

That's the thing about the original statement. It's vague enough that it could be describing the above, in which case it's true, or it might mean rich media, as you say, in which case it wouldn't be.

I'm gonna say negative. Only because I want there to be more and really think he's either making it all up or his "informed friend on the inside" doesn't have all the information.

Either way I'll be happy. I love my 3G and can easily see myself using it for another year.

I keep forgetting this is only 2009. iChat phones won't exist yet with the current technology.

I am buying this new iPhone only because my current iPhone 3G has a screen cracked beyond annoying with tape wrapped around it. I guess I'll upgrade every year.

I just got off the phone with a friend of mine who is somewhat connected in to what is in the Apple channels, and he gave me some interesting news of what to expect from WWDC keynote tomorrow...

Everyone has a friend of a friend with a cousin or a brother who has a row boat who works someplace and is connected.

:D

I have a friend who is somewhat connected to reading a rumor forum and based off of what he has read there...

are you guys all kidding me !!!!!!!! you believe this guy.... IN NO way is he right... this guy doesnt know anymore than we do.. unless ofcourse he is connected with steve jobs. which he is not... people did this same thing last year and it turned out to be fake.. i know everyone is excited and cant wait .. but just DONT believe this guys he is BSing all of you

I took a dump this morning and it bears a resemblence to an iPhone with a front facing camera. I can post a pic if you need documented proof.

And thats where I stopped reading.

Me too!

That and he was basically quoting every persistent rumor that has been out for several months. Not that many of these rumors can't be true. He just isn't saying anything new.

I believe the guy... unfortunately. Id love to see video chat with a front facing camera. Would love to. However I am also hearing a similar thing from a friend at Apple who wont go into detail. he said there will be "substantial additions" and he mentioned being able to get me one if I want one. Im guessing availability is going to be pretty soon then. However based on the date its released I'll have to get one from him or wait. Time will tell!

Man... am I the only person on earth that doesn't know somebody at Apple that'll leak information to me!?! :(

a friend of mine just ate an apple and he told me that what these guys are saying is true

I believe the OPs info (at least what was reportedly told).

That's why I'll be happy with the OS upgrade and can wait until next year for a new iPhone. I think my upgrade is next January, so it'll work out well.

I'm hopeful for more than what we've heard about the 3.0 OS. We'll see.

You both stopped reading... yet you know what he wrote.

Yeah...

As per the OP and waiting for the 4th gen iPhone... duh. It makes sense to skip some generations, as I'm sure many of the first-gen owners did with the 3G. I know I won't be upgrading.

Yeah I really wish that the video rumors were true, and that I knew someone at Apple that was a bigger blabbermouth, but you can't have everything. I think that if a front facing camera exists then we have not seen accurate shots yet because wheres the switcher been for front vs back camera? unless its a physical switch. However havent those parts on the chinese site shown evidence of the top speaker being higher up? if so what is the reason for that?

Looking forward to these questions being answered in a little under 2 hours!

... but more interesting was that he said Apple will introduce "a completely new, really amazing product that you haven't heard about" in the Fall of this year.. in time for the Holidays. I can't wait to hear what that one is.

I think that it is a Robot Steve Jobs! No one would see that coming... and it would secure future keynotes from being Schiller-fied.

For someone with a 5GHz-only N network (like me!), having an iPhone w/ 802.11N will definitely be a welcome feature (though not enough to convince me to upgrade from my iPhone 3G).
