you said iOS 5 on an iPhone 3G before saying 4.3.5... you clearly have no clue what you are talking about

Of course I did, it is in your quote of my text. Do you have trouble reading or comprehending? I said I asked my brother without telling him how to check and he told me the wrong one. When I told him how to check it turns out he is running 4.

Hope that helped you understand what all is going on.

Not everyone feels the need to have the latest technology and, if an older phone still works and does what someone needs it to, then it's really no one else's business what they do. They certainly don't "need" to do anything.

It's not supported and getting the features that are making the iPhone a good platform. iOS pre iOS 5 was a real POS as a phone operating system. No notification system (WM 6.1 has one), no multitasking before iOS 4 (BB and WM had one). Heck, the original iPhone didn't have copy/paste or MMS. It was a piece of iTrash. It took Apple long enough, but now that they are all the way there on basic phone OS functionality, iOS and the iPhone really is amazing. And finally deserving of my money.

I think the pace of needing to upgrade is starting to slow, as the market is starting to get bigger, although the need for faster LTE will probably drive a lot of upgrades as the 3G networks are getting rather bogged down at times...

Hi
I am one of those rare people who still has the 3G.

Am I right to believe that if I ever update my phone it will become intolerably slow?

Am I doomed to the phone becoming less and less useable as apps require the updates?

I'm an ex-3G owner that jumped ship after the iOS 4.0 update from hell. The phone is almost 4 years old, this summer I think, it's not surprising that many apps aren't supporting it.

this is all a bit of a bummer! I was kind of hoping to keep on to my little baby 3G for years!!!

It's weird how technology never suffices forever - somehow we always have to 'upbuy'! This must be very clever development.

You don't have to "upbuy", but you'll be stuck on DOS.

If you think this stinks, it's nearly impossible to get a new os on an android phone. The providers want you to buy a new phone just to get a new os. And no, I don't think it counts if you have to do some finagling or research to get an update. There are a lot of people who aren't technologically proficient. They're not going to bother with an update to the os without it being almost spoonfed.

None of which changes what I said. If someone is happy with their phone and it works for them then they don't need to upgrade. Again, not everyone needs the latest technology. Am I not saying it right?

No. Everyone in this day and age should have a basic level of smartphone functionality, i.e. a notification system and multitasking.

That's strange the og droid (near the same age as the 3GS) got an update in nov (near the same time as ios 5) but it didnt have a negative effect on the phones performance. Isn't that weird?!? Lol

Don't worry I do the samething on androidcentral in defense of the iPhone/iOS. :)

Again, no. You're confusing what you need with what everyone needs. Take my Dad for example. The man doesn't even know how to text. He needs a phone that can make phonecalls. What would he need notifications and multitasking for?

He's not paying for a smartphone either.

Elfy - I agree - it is all about what you require.

The issue is - I simply don't know what I require - I would quite like to actually be able to use the best apps (and I kind of think that I should be allowed to) but I don't feel that I should buy a new phone.

How do you know what he's paying for?

Because he has a dumbphone. Hello.

What do you mean by notification system? Every phone has a notification system, and you don't need a smartphone to multitask either.

The iPhone pre iOS 5 doesn't have a notification system. It has pop-up notifications. That's not a system. A system has to have a method of managing them unobtrusively, and compiling notifications from different applications. WM6 has some sort of system of icons in the menu bar and showing you messages and emails on the home screen, Android has it, I think the Pre had something like that.

Yep, I'm doomed never to update my iphone as well. My 3GS has the reboot during calls bug, which is apparently fixed by replacing a file called mobilewatchdog with the same file from iOS 3. While the problem persists, that fix is not available in iOS 5, so I'm stuck on 4.3.3. No problem though, phone does everything I need, and is smooth and has great battery life.

I know it sounds unthinkable, but I don't give a damn about both. (no, really)
