But how can you tell if they're better tasting? You'll need to find a bag with the old "crap" Doritos to compare. But what if those are stale? That wouldn't work. So now you'll never know if the "new" Doritos are, in fact, better tasting. Now you'll have to go to sleep every night not knowing if the current Doritos are better tasting.

And bring back Crystal Pepsi, dammit!

Wow, that takes me back, thanks for that! Now We can just sit back and wait for the younger MR members to start asking what the hell that is... ;)

"oh, hey, they put some extra fake cheese powder on the chips. I like cheese powder. I'll buy it!"

Do you realise that this is the only google result for the phrase "i like cheese powder"

Almost a month and a half later, that's still true! No one else explicitly likes cheese powder in all the world, at least the Connected-and-Describing-Tastes world. Now THAT is power.

This Doritos business has been buzzing around in my mind for a while. I've been thinking about Orwell a lot and what he would say about America today. More and more our politicians seem to adapt the tactics of the advertising industry in terms of "simplifying the message." It's a lot easier to talk about fighting for one-word knockouts like "freedom" than it is to talk about "really wanting to leave Iraq except the insurgency is getting stronger and the iraqi army isn't training very quickly so I'm sorry but that's the way it goes." The Bush administration's commitment - let's face it, they're hanging on desperately - to steadfast vocabulary is, I can see, far more attractive to the ear than hours of "boring" but detailed descriptions of reality. No wonder America continues to accept the war on the basis of the "values" the administration espouses, and no wonder the traditional media is quickly losing its influence. The American ear is very lazy.

But I guess we've already known that for a while. This Doritos crap is just another example in a long line of "dumbing-down" for the consumer (usually to cover up crappy ingredients). Sigh.

I thought they were eliminating TFA, that's why the doritos would taste different, the difference is not a good one so maybe they're just trying to confuse people. But that's marketing for you, 98% of the population could see the most absurd lines/words in ads and never bat an eye.

"Now BETTER Tasting" = MORE MSG!!!

Doritos = Corn, fried, with lots of salt, MSG, fake food colouring and then maybe some spices / real flavours added (hey, MSG is cheaper than paprika...)

Oh, and about MSG : http://www.msgtruth.org/

Thanks for the link! Yeah, I try and avoid poisoning my body like that as much as possible. You can't avoid everything of course, but a conscious effort to minimize your body's exposure to such toxins is definitely important. Everything in moderation though!

I say eat what you want. If you wanna eat what you want however you can't just sit on a couch and waste away.

I think Doritos are Salty, MSG Ridden, Triangle Corn snacks from Heaven. I love every flavor except for Cool Ranch.

Who in their right mind would eat potato chips when Doritos are available? :D

Who in their right mind would eat only potato chips or Doritos, when you can have both! At the same time! :D

Oh yes, by all means, eat what you want - everyone is free to make that choice. Some people choose to eat healthy and take care of their bodies, while other people choose to fill their bodies with crap and turn into obese diabetics - you get people at both ends of the spectrum and everywhere in between. I always go by, "Everything in moderation", and feel that you can't go too wrong if you follow that advice. Yet as I said above, I also make a point to fill my body with as little junk as possible - my health, fitness and well-being is very important to me. But for some people it isn't for whatever reason - fair enough - as you say, those people can eat what they want.

Now the real mystery is when "Better Tasting" is stamped on a bag of dog food.

Yeah, how do we really know? ;)

I've often wondered why there is an expiration date on sour cream. What, will it turn good?

Did you know that the only food that does not spoil is honey.
And milk doesn't really spoil either - it sours...

Yes, I did know that! :)

As for "artificial food" (let's call it) you'll find many more examples - pepperoni for example. Mmm, a meat that doesn't expire, yah, that's gotta be good for ya...

My dad still has a six pack of those Crystal colas. They can fetch a good bit on eBay. Unfortunately they failed miserably. Just like Pepsi Blu which I really liked.

Funny, I have often thought the same thing: "I wish I had a bottle of Crystal Pepsi, I betcha it would be a collector's item now!" ;)

This reminds me of those ads where Miller Lite claims to have "more taste" than Bud Light. Road kill has "more taste" than steak, but I know which one I'd choose. ;)

Shard are you aware that your beloved Crystal Pepsi contains High Fructose Corn Syrup and MODIFIED food starch???? Two things believed to be major factors in the worlds obesiety problems? Notice I said eat what you want but don't sit around and not expect to become an immobile dieing obese person. I think we are on the same page, but lets not act like the same stuff found in doritos is not found in most products all around your home. Unless of course you eat completely organic in which case i'd be wrong, however your love of Crystal Pepsi would void that statement.

Haha - yes, we are on the same page, no worries. :) First of all, yes, I do know of all the "lovely" ingredients in Crystal Pepsi, and secondly, notice I said I loved Crystal Pepsi - past tense! ;)

I actually used to go through several 2-liters of pop (in general, not just CP) a week, eat bags and bags of chips (Doritos in fact!), eat a ton of chocolate, pizza, etc. back in the day. However I cut all of that out of my diet about 4 years ago and have never felt better since. I started being more health-conscious, going to the gym, and eating the right types of food, cutting sugars and all that other crap out of my diet. Since then I've lost 30+ pounds, my skin has cleared up, I don't get sick anymore, and in general, I've never felt better and I've never been healthier or more fit in my entire life!

And yes, of course I have those things from time to time, but now I drink a glass of pop once a month or so - same with having some chips. And also, of course you can't avoid all those ingredients, but by limiting your intake you'll do your body wonders. As I said, everything in moderation. I eat a lot of organic foods, yes, but for me it's more the simple choices, like having fruit instead of chocolate for snacks during the day, eating fresh sandwiches on whole grain bread instead of eating at a fast food place, and things like that. Simple choices, realy.

I think diet is the most important aspect when it comes to health. I see a lot of people going to the gym, thinking they're keeping fit, but they hardly break a sweat, then go home, sit on the couch for the rest of the evening, and chow down on junk food. Garbage in, garbage out - you need to give your body the right fuel in order for it to do aything for you. So yes, I completely agree with you, sitting around doing nothing is going to lead to obesity among other complications.

I could continue to go on, but I'll finish by saying that balance is the key. I treat myself from time to time, but I am aware of what I'm doing. And since I eat healthy practically all the time, that helps. I shake my head at people who go on diets or follow these crazes like Atkin's. They don't work in the long run. I have a friend who, in an effort to try and lose weight, is having "healthy night" every Friday, where she eats healthy food instead of the usual junk. Good try, but how about eating healthy all the time (what a novel concept!) and making it not the exception, but the rule. At any rate, I don't consider myself a health nut, just health-conscious. After all, if you don't have your health, what are you left with?

Shard, may I just say that that's one of the more sensible things I've read in a while?

Thank you. :)
