Hello,

Currently I have the processors (only the processors, nothing else, neither the cooling nor anything) of the power mac g5 quad.

And I would like to know if buying the dual core PowerMac11.2 version could I replace the dual core processors with the quad core ones.

Bye and thanks for your time and help.

Hi Sergio,

There is no quad core.
What we "loosely" call Quads is a PM11,2 Dual CPU each Dual Core.
To have a quad core you need a PM11,2 logic board for two cpus, a single CPU one won't support
2 cpus.

Thank you vddrnnr.

So what you mean is that if I buy a PowerMac11,2 with 2 sockets and 2 CPU's I can't just put Dual CPU each Dual Core. Because the motherboard would not support it, is that correct?

Hmm, IIRC, early PMG5 single core, single and dual cpu models were hardware locked and would not take cpu upgrades but later 2005 dual core 970MP cpu models were indeed swappable. Anyhow, the 11,2 logic board came in two varieties:

a single socket 970mp (for one dual core CPU)
a dual socket 970mp (for the quad core - which has two, dual core CPUs)

As far as I understand it (I have not attempted this myself), the CPUs on the late 2005 powermacs are interchangeable and can be air cooled successfully as some folks have switched LCS quads to air-cooled quad systems and others upgrading DC2.0 and DC2.3Ghz power macs to single air-cooled DC2.5. So from these posted experiences, you could acquire a late 2005 box with a single socket, dual core logic board and run one of the 970mp, dual core 2.5ghz CPUs and you would have an air-cooled 11,2 dual core 2.5Ghz Power mac G5 - pretty cool and something I should try with my DC2.0. It looks like in some instances, the power mac was unhappy until Apple Hardware test CD was run and the machine calibrated and then in others, it chimed and booted up reporting the CPU upgrade - so unsure what's going on there. The thread I found useful and referenced is below:

Best of luck to you if you choose to move ahead. :apple:

Hi Sergio,

It's like RhianB said you have two varieties for the last PMG5's (Powermac 11,2 model).
The logicboards for this model as RhianB points out have single CPU and dual CPU models
also in this mode CPUs are always dual core.
So you have the CPUs, do you know their exact model?
In the PMG5 ( 11,2 ) the PMG5 had 2 cores in the previous model it had only one and
you cannot put the previous G5s in the last logicboard.
So first you need to know exactly their model and if they are if they are the 970mp then it's
dual core.
In that case you need to look for the 2 CPU logicboar to have a Quad.
If you can't find one then RhianB's suggestion of using the single CPU logic board will sitll
give you a dual core 2.5 Ghz PMG5.
To cool it down look at this thread for "Air Cooling" or you can search for an LCS but it
must be for the PowerMac11,2 model which is different and more robust than the
previous ones.
