I was having similar troubles, and nothing was working for me. Then, I simply tried to open the stuck app by tapping on it, and the loading continued and completed! I'd guess this won't work for everyone, but it is worth a try.

Hello, I bought iphone3gs but I want to download app from app store then it said required update version do you have any idea? Thanks

I found a way to do it with a free app called iFunBox that requires installing on a Mac or PC.
It can be found at http://www.i-funbox.com/
It appears they are nothing more than thumbnails and they can be found and deleted via iFunBox > Raw File System > Downloads > in Misc. Folders.
I downloaded a couple of thumbs to my PC, opened them with Windows Photo Viewer and they were images of those stuck download icons. Funnily enough there were 2 more folders containing thumbs than icons that were showing stuck on the iPhone but I couldn't be bothered to open identify them all so just bit the bullet and deleted all the folders containing the thumbnails.
I then disconnected the iphone from the PC, went to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings and on reboot they were all gone.
Hope this helps

I assume it was the "reset all settings?" FYI, We've used this in the past to do essentially what a "restore: setup as new" does without actually having to a restore.
I have reset my phone twice reset all my settings its still stuck on waiting and I do not have a computer what do I do..

I found something.

If you are downloading anything from iTunes and that download itself is hung up, apps will not download or update. I deleted some podcasts I was trying to download that we're hung up themselves and that fixed it.

Thank you. After doing full reset, hard reset, logging in and out of iTunes ac, deleting and trying to reinstall apps, all I needed to do was delete my podcasts that were waiting to be downloaded and all problems fixed!

Please forgive me for posting here if this isnt the appropriate place...but...Hi all,

i wonder if anyone can help me here. I have an iphone 4 running on 5.0.1 for reasons that its JB. I went to update my apps and they have been frozen in the "waiting" position for 2 days now. Ive tried to delete them but to no success as the X wont show up on them. Ive installed other ones with success yet the stuck ones will not budge. I've tried signing in and out of my account with no success...rebooting after every attempt at any change...reset the setting s and still no luck. Ive even tried to delete them from Itunes on my pc and then sync....no success they are still on my phone. Even the ones i dont want on my phone anymore which ive deleted on itunes are still present on my phone. I have nothing downloading on itunes that might have gotten them stuck as i dont download music from there. Ive tried updating them with still now success...they wnt change to pause or anything other than the dreaded "Waiting"! I'm at me wits end...please can someone help me.I dont want to do a Factory reset as i dont want to lose all my stuff from Cydia, and its too much of a hastle. whether i delete them usinf Itunes and syncing on my pc they are still on my phone in the WAITING position. I use one of them all the time...Audible...and while its been reinstalled it just sits there unbudged in the waiting position. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance :)

Not sure if this thread is dead but I had the same problem. I had 2 apps that were stuck trying to update. I was about to try the reset option when I found a silly solution.... I simply clicked on one of the apps that was attempting to update. Bingo! It woke up, finished updating and opened normally. I thought it was a fluke, but then it worked on the other stalled app.
Hope this helps someone.

I was having this problem on my jail broken iphone. I don't know why. I usually don't have trouble downloading apps over wifi. I did not want to reset all my settings and I wasn't at home to get access to my computer. So, I tried rebooting into safe mode through SB settings and my app started downloading right away. I was able to reboot back into my jail broken state with my app installed with no problems. Just a little something for you jail breakers to try.

Guys please. It's the podcast app thats causing all this trouble. Just delete it then tap the other apps and they will update. After that just downlaod the podcast app again and problem solved!

Try a "reset all settings" (NOT an erase all) and if that doesn't work then you're going to have to restore.
I've tried everything including that but my app still won't update. If that means I have to restore it, will it delete all my pictures and apps?

I found a way to fix it but its very annoying because you have to use this method for each update.

1. You need to SSH into your phone and delete the /var/mobile/Media/Downloads folder
2. You can do this if you are jailbroken with iFile or unjailbroken with iExplorer

Delete the folder shown above, reboot, install update. Rinse and Repeat until you are done updating.
thank you!

once I deleted that folder and rebooted my iphone, I was able to update it again from within App Store app

My iphone is doing the exact same. I've done everything that people have suggested, reset the settings, reset the phone ect. It won't let me delete the app so it's just sitting on "waiting". What do I do? It's been stuck for about three hours.

When I erased all content and setting on my iPod touch 5, I restored from iCloud backup and all the auto download apps were stuck on waiting. So I had to go back to iOS 6 and setup my device again, then re update by to iOS 7 beta 6. This happen to anyone else?

I have had the same problem with my Instagram app, it has been on waiting since 8:00am this morning for an automatic download I believe an I have tried everything on this forum but it is still on waiting and it's now 21:30 and I don't know what to do, seriously need some help

I have a iPhone 5c and right after I downloaded my music off my computer, my phone restored all my data and now all my apps are stuck on waiting . I need help quick, I'm going to California soon

I have found the answer to the problem! I have an itouch 5 jailbroken 7.0.1 and did the same, it stalled while trying to download latest apps. •TURN OFF DEVICE
•TURN BACK ON
•GO TO SETTINGS
•TURN WIFI OFF
•TURN WIFI ON
•THEN GO BACK INTO APP STORE AND UPDATE APPS
