You want to argue that your finger painting project you made in the first grade is better than Da Vincis Mona Lisa?

I'm not really putting my input on this as part of any sort Jobs/Dre analogy, but of all of Da Vinci's work the Mona Lisa is definitely one of the less interesting ones.

For an unrelated corollary, you should google Jackson Pollock sometime.

I disagree. Both are, or as in Steve's case, were, successful, hard driven perfectionists. Which is what the OP is comparing. Whether or not someone likes Dre doesn't make the comparison any less valid.

If Dre was a perfectionist then Beats headphones were of a superior quality just like Apple products are. But the truth is Beats are mediocre and overpriced. If Dre is perfectionist in something that's in making money, but even then I think most of the talent behind Beats success belongs to Iovine.

Putting aside the quality of Beats, that article makes Dre sound great. If it's true then he could actually be a good asset for Apple. I'm interested to see where this goes. It does seem like a very "old Apple" thing to do and I kinda like that.

(I've never heard any of his music)

Should have seen this hate coming from the title. Seriously, no one is saying that Dre has any background in IT, of course that's not saying Jobs was on the level of Woz either. But what they have in common from a business perspective is vision, attention to detail, and drive. They both have a knack for know what will sell and has/had more hits than misses. Now judging on that criteria alone, Dre is probably Jobs equal or close to it. A young kid from the war zone of Compton, managed to produce several iconic musicians, record labels, a company, etc. and is now at Apple. Give him a few years of mentoring at Apple about the tech industry and he may exceed Jobs. I love Steve as much as the next Apple fan, but c'mon let's be honest (and I work in the tech industry btw) Steve was more executive than programmer, developer, etc. he was good at driving goals, having insight, and steering his companies in the right direction. Dre did the same exact thing, except his products were major musical talents like NWA, Tupac, Eminem, 50 Cent, etc. but unlike Steve, he also brought things he created himself to market i.e. his albums/tracks. Again, this was a kid who grew up in a part of CA that Steve would have never dared to go to and yet.... So I wonder why the hate? I actually believe that they're on to something with this comparison.

Thank you! :D

LOL, Mediocre and OVERPRICED.

Thanks for the laugh. What's that in your pocket? oh, an iPhone....

Why? What proof do you have?

there's a difference between knowing what good sound is, and knowing what will sell to kids.

And the product managers who came to him said "this will sell to kids, can we put your name on?" and the product was born.

What a genius Dre is!

He also, apparently, has no concept of good sound, because his headphones are horrible. Hardly better than the el cheap KOSS knockoffs you can get at Walgreens.

CNET - The Beats Studio Wireless is a very comfortable over-the-ear wireless headphone that offers excellent sound for a Bluetooth headphone and features active noise-canceling technology.

PC Mag - Beats Pro by Dr. Dre offers excellent audio performance with strong but not overwhelming bass response. The Beats Pro by Dr. Dre offers high quality audio performance

CNET - The Beats by Dr. Dre Executive noise-canceling headphones have a sleek, sturdy design, fit comfortably, offer good sound for noise-canceling headphones...

Wired - The iBeats are pretty stellar as far as reasonably priced in-ear headphones go...overall, they toss out some good sound

Consumer Reports - [Monster Cable Beats by Dr. Dre] delivers very good sound quality and very good active noise reduction...

CNET - The unique and stylish Monster Beats by Dr. Dre headphones offer solid audio...

Engadget - Beats Pro rating: 8.0 sound quality

CNET - The Monster Beats by Dr. Dre Tour In-Ear Headphones offer much in the way of style and sound

PC Mag - I'd recommend the Beats by Dr. Dre Tour High Resolution In-Ear Headphones. It's solidly constructed and cool looking, with heavy low end and a secure fit that keeps the stereo image consistent.

Slashgear - If you can try the [Beats by Dr. Dre] Tour out before buying, ... should your ears prove as recalcitrant as ours, then they’re definitely worth a try musically.

Home Theater Review - Across the board, everything about the Beats Pro's performance is improved and not only that, it feels as if its matured, for the Beats Pro's sound is decidedly more audiophile than its predecessors.

PC Mag - Beats Studio Wireless offers powerful audio performance with intense bass and high-mid boosting.

Aren't just a bit nonobjective?

Just like when Samsung released the smart watch. You guys said it SUCKED.

But come October, Apple will slap it's name on a "smart watch" and guess what, idiots will buy it.. lol

Or how about when the S4 came with a fitness app. You guys called it useless. Oh wait..... What's that? Apple will come up with their own version? Let me guess, since it's Apple. it must be Awesome? Right?

Genius!

Uh oh, you realize what you're speaking of was, which happened 25 YEARS ago, went to court and was given community service a $2500 fine and a 2 years probation? You also realize that people grow up. People change. And sometimes it's for the better. And now he's a fine example of how a young man, literally from the streets of the ghetto, can completely turn his life around.

They fall apart after a month? Thanks for your completely made up comment.

Meanwhile, they are rated 4.5 stars on Amazon

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...e=as2&tag=popcyouk-20&linkId=FW4UEDPEOWH73DZR

People always like to bring up how terrible Beats are but people keep buying them and rating them highly. The same thing goes for the iPhone and iPad and Mac. Remember their posts about the ratings the next time an iPhone gets high marks from Amazon or JD Power and Associates.

Although I do think he is a genius, I'm not using the calculator design example to support such an opinion.

Person X: Jobs never designed anything.
Person Y: He designed the calculator.
Person X: omgz you think he genius?!

I wouldn't call it fully designed. He made adjustments to a basically finished project.

Great! Now tell us why didnt they do that before Dr. Dre got directly involved in the company?

The difference between Steve Jobs and Dr Dre is that Steve Jobs knew what quality meant. He would have never purchased Beats and it sub par products.

---> Ask anyone that knows Dre and two words come to mind: workaholic and perfectionist. Say the word Detox and Dr Dre and people will LOL at how long it’s been. This is the guy who stayed in a music studio 72 hours straight with no sleep because of one song. Amazing how people make negative judgments about Dr Dre without knowing his background.

Actually the comparison to Jobs is spot on. And in some ways Dre exceeds Jobs. Not in money of course. Dre changed hip hop and music in general as a producer (not rapper) the way Jobs changed computers, phones, tablets. Neither created their respective categories but both had the vision to change it dramatically. There’s a reason you know of Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, NWA, Eminem, 50 Cent. It’s not by happenstance. Dre’s a hit maker and been so since the early 90’s. Who here remembers when frontman Eazy-E from NWA (Dre’s old group) was invited to Pres Bush Senior White House dinner? Or how Dre’s Death Row Records was valued at over $200million back in the 90s? Here’s a better comparison: NWA = Mac computers, Aftermath Records = ipod, Beats by Dre = iphone.

This all from a high school dropout who’s from Compton, CA once known as the murder capital of the world. His music already has expanded the globe and influenced generations of artist but now Beats has taken that vision and will influence a new generation of inner city kids into the field of technology.

That’s hardly fair. The type of music I would enjoy on a set of Beats is much easier to hear on the bus than the symphony I’d be listening to on a pair of Sennheisers.

That being said, people pay $400+ for cosmetic stuff that isn’t terribly high quality all the freaking time. This is part of our culture. I don’t do it personally, but I don’t see how this trend is so surprising to you.

People have been saying the same thing about Apple products for years. Why didnt that stop you from purchasing Apple products?

----------

Maybe but I I don't remember Steve Jobs ever rapping about putting a cap in someone's ***

Funny, I dont remember Dr Dre stealing intellectual property then suing others over it. I dont remember Dr Dre using his company to break federal laws.

----------

Came here for headphone snobs...was not disappointed.

Please. These audio snobs who've never set foot in a studio in their life have been rocking those terrible white earbuds for a decade....and now they all of the sudden care about the sound.

I've heard more people say that about Apple than I have about Beats headphones. Beats have their place, they're stylish, and excel at making certain types of music sound great. And yes, they're marketed almost as well as Apple's products.

And in a nutshell, that is why Apple buying Beats was a perfect match.

Dr Dre,

I just hope that Apple know what they are doing.

One thing for sure in USA Inc, the fanboys also connected with KKK ideologies will not like him out of principle. They just cannot get out of their stone age ideologies.

So best of luck to him and Apple. Time will tell.

Perfectionist? Is that why my Wireless Beats headband snapped when I was taking them off when they were only a couple months old? Is that why my Beats Executives had the left speaker stop working from light use within a couple of months of purchase? Is that why the headband on my wired beats came loose within a year of purchase?

Overpriced crap.

Have you heard the iPhone/iPad/Mac horror stories each year after they launch? Beats has a liberal return policy swap them out for a good pair. Geesh!

There's an extremely tiny list of human beings that you could compare to Steve Jobs. Dr Dre isn't even in the same universe.

There are lots of people you could compare to Steve Jobs and if you go back in history, many have done far more for humanity.

Wow.
You are comparing stealing intellectual property to bragging about killing and glorifying violence?

Im not saying they are the same. One happened recently and the other happened 20something years ago... So one could argue that Dr Dre became a better person before he died and not when he died.

My confusion in this was that I assumed that Beats were just headphones. I could not understand why somebody would like these as a tool to reproduce audio. When I step back, I can really see why somebody take this discussion so personally. This is an image thing.

If you tell somebody that their Grado SR325's are veiled and rolled off, they are not cut as deeply as when you tell somebody that their Beats are have poor bass control and no mid range. In the later senario, you're threatening somebody's image and style.

You are going to beat that horse until it's dead aren't you? You are still pushing the narrative that there is some "excuse" for someone liking Beats. There you go again, pushing your opinion as some sort of fact. You have no valid information to support your "image" theory. I'm going to step out on a limb and say, imo, your confusion stems from your inability to accept that someone likes something you don't. The more you try tell everyone why they like Beats the less credible you seem. There is no need to justify the difference in opinion. It's really not that complicated. Occam's Razor. Some people like Beats. Full stop.

Bose is about as overpriced and overrated as Beats are. The difference is, Beats acknowledges that they put out bass heavy headphones and people acknowledge that they pay a premium because they are "cool." Bose users, on the other hand, try to claim that they are enlightened audiophiles.

People wearing white earbuds also claim to be audiophiles. We know good and well if people dont like the sound quality vs the price they wont buy the headphones. I had to test an array of headsets for myself and in all but one case Beats had by far the better sound. Its my opinion and its as valid as anyone else's. People vote with their dollars. The people here just dont like the results of the election.
