Don't worry, the chances of you ending up being carjacked or a live television car chase are actually pretty good. :p

My neighbor failed his driving test for main 2 reasons.

1) According to his mom, the brakes were messed up in their expedition, it was just a couple months old and the braking power was seriously decreased. On the driving test he had to slam on the brakes at the last minute and almost hit cars. This was confirmed when the family was on a trip and they tried to emergency stop to avoid hitting a deer but failed miseribly and the dealers said there was a brake problem

2) He had to make a U turn on a 2 lane road in an expedition- which is not really possible.

----
He's on his 4th ticket since he got his licence.

OH!!! It's a good idea to drive around the DMV.. but around here the law says that you can't practice on the driving course while the DMV is open.. so it might be the same there. I guess they can't really catch you but if they do they might cancel your test or some other BS.

my road test was about 15 mins.
I was speeding going like 45 in a 30...I did half a parallel park. (they told me its good and to go foward) and i still passed!!!! :p

Don't sweat it. I took mine here in Massachusetts, and it was a joke.

The officer administering it barely talked to me, we drove about a minute down the road, turned into an off road, pulled over, backed up like 10 feet, 3 pnt turn, and then that was it.

I even forgot to signal that I was pulling over and I still passed:eek:

It's scarey sometimes when you think of the kinds of things you can get away with. But, I turned out fine.

I am a driver's ed instructor here in Michigan. Here the road test is a little more involved than other state's.

What we tell our students is to make sure that first of all the car is in working order. That means make sure to check all of your signals and lights are working. Here they have to pass a quick car check.
Then as others have said to make sure to practice driving in the area where the test will take place.
Some of the things that I know that they look for is definitely make sure that you make complete stops but also make sure to pay attention to the stop lines. Here it is an automatic failure if you stop on a stop line or a crosswalk.

Keep a good space cushion between you and the car in front of you and REALAX and you will do fine.

There is no such thing as a space cushion in texas (though thats not where original poster is from). If you leave a car length or more between the car in front of you, you will be cut off by the person next to you.

Well tomorrow I go in for my written test. Any last min tips or things I should be wary of?

They have more questions about driving under the influence that they used to have. Even if you don't plan to have to worry about those laws yourself, it would be wise to know the current laws about blood levels and what happens after a 1st or 2nd DUI offense because they might still have questions about it.

A lot of the other questions are things you probably know by common sense. You can get a few answers wrong and still pass, so you'll likely be fine.

However, I've seen them ask picky questions about speed limits (e.g., 15 or 20 or 25 in a school zone?) and what the colors of curbs mean. You might only get those right if you happened to review them ahead of time.

its very easy. practice 3 point turns, make sure the first thiing you do when you get in the car with the instructor is put on your seatbelt, then check all mirrors and such. make full stops, use blinkers, and you're golden!

be OBVIOUS when checking mirrors. Dont just move your eyes, move your entire head.

That's good advice.

I can also recommend what my driving instructor told me just before my test: "Drive like you will when you pass the test. He just wants to see that you're a confident driver." It must have worked because I passed my test, when i thought I had made a complete dogs dinner of it :)

most important of all...don't worry!!! you'll pass.

the tests in this country are absolutely ridiculously easy, if you do fail, you definitely should not be anywhere near the drivers seat!

like i said, don't worry...unless you're a complete dumbass with no common sense and/or respect for others, then you'll be absolutely fine :)

I didn't pass the written test. I feel like a moron now. Freakin' 16 years old, freakin' teeny bopper faces pass with flying colors in front of me and theres me being 19... "Um, sorry sir you didn't pass..." :( :(

Sorry to hear that, CubaTBird...often times tests like that can be tough because you overthink things. I know when I moved out here to California when I was 22 and had to take only the written test to get my new license I missed a couple of questions because of that. My gut reaction would have been correct, but then I managed to convince myself that they could have meant "y" instead of "x" and got them wrong.

Study up some more and head back in there to retake the test as soon as they'll let you!

I could have taken it again later today. But I think I will go in for my second try next week. Hopefully I will be ready by then.

Congratulations! If you're like me, the actually driving portion of the test will be a breeze compared to the written part. :)

NJ it was about 10 minutes for me. Our DMV has a course so you are never going over 20 mph, and there is no highway driving involved. Make sure your stopping is obvious, and always signal. I passed my test in an automatic, but my crazy sister passed her test in our '88 stick Volvo. It was so funny because she was the first person to pass all day with that instructor, and it was with the most difficult kind of car:D

Hey guys I got a question. During my actual driving test, do you think they will have me drive on a freeway?

I would say it depends how close you live to one. Over here the closest one would be 15 minutes away, and since the whole test is 4 minutes, that's not reasonable. :D

Good job with the written part....although I've never heard of a written part, over here it's just a multiple choice test for your permit and then just the driving test in the car.

Yeah multiple choice is what I meant.

Crashing into a police car or the wall of the Motor Vehicle building is not recommended, and neither is listening to your iPod and talking on your cell phone while taking the test!
Talking on the phone in the UK is now illegal. I still think that smoking, putting on makeup, etc should be too.
