But what is the purpose of the directions feature on the iphone then?

Sorry I thought it was suppose to help you navigate whether you are walking, snow mobiling, driving or whatever.

Most people I would suggest would use it for driving.

After all apple has said it has GPS and most people associate GPS with in car satellite navigation.

No give the OP some credit here he was only trying to use his iphone.

But I agree this is pretty much useless for driving as IT IS VERY VERY DANGEROUS without voice prompts.

Its Ok for walking around but hang on it will chew your battery up and is only good for about an hour- I have tried it. At least in your car you can charge your iphone.

So no the maps application is pretty much useless full stop.

No. It is useful for PLANNING your journey. Like old fashioned paper maps. I never use GPS, 'cos I like to know where I'm going before I set out. I must admit I have used Google maps a few times on a journey, if I've managed to get myself lost in unfamiliar territory, but I always pull over when I do.

I use it to plan my journey as well, heck I wouldn't play/touch any devices while I'm driving, not my iPhone. I put them on my dashboard, connect it to the car's audio system as well with bluetooth, then I start driving. Come on people be a responsible driver.

should it really come with a warning though?

I find it funny that they actually had to make a law telling people not to text message while they're driving

Me too. Also reminds me of when someone caught my dad on the phone while driving (he is a doctor, and he was on call), so that person followed him, and called the police.

The person who followed ended up getting cautioned for tailgating, and because he was on the phone, while trying to focus on following someone. Always makes me laugh. :D

Yes maps are good for checking your route.

But the way it is implemented with the arrows to progress you through the route is obviously MEANT to be used as you progress through the route.

So when you get to the next stage you press the arrow to go to the next part of the route.

You have to look at the screen find the arrow and press it. Impossible or as the OP realised (and should have realised before even attempting this) down right dangerous to do by yourself at speed.

No, the way apple has it at the moment is asking for an accident.

Maps are great but the directions feature is not well done and should have voice prompts or even do this automatically.

But the driver is responsible ultimately and you have to excercise common sense and just because apple have a feature it doesn't ALWAYS mean it is sensible or safe.

I used Maps to find somwhere I had never been before the other day and although it did get me there, I have to say I almost had a serious accident.

When you are speeding along a motor way at 100Km trying to centre the screen or press the little arrow to the next part of the directions it is just asking to have accident.

This application which comes with the iphone should have a warning...
Caution peanut allergy warning: Peanut Butter contains peanuts.

It worked out my route fine but I was using the directions where you have to press that little arrow to advance to the next stage.

You don't need to do that. You just need to click that button on the bottom left so it centers the screen around the blue dot and follow the highlighted path. It's not dangerous that way.

Not AS dangerous. It still requires that you take your eyes off the road. Voice prompts are definitely needed.

I think checking your mirrors and looking at your phone's screen are two completely different things. Either way, I'm not here to argue this. I agree with the OP that voice prompts would be safer.

That is all.

I'm not saying it wouldn't be good to have voice prompts. I'm just saying you can use Maps safely in the car. You don't need to look at the iPhone for too long, you just need to check once in a while to make sure you're going the right way. You don't need to take the eyes of the road for longer than when you check the mirrors or the speedometer.

It's not really for navigation - it's just for locating where you, finding out where you need to go. Ok, that's navigation, but I mean it's not really meant for realtime navigation.

Remember the original iPhone? It had Maps, pretty much in the form that it has now, but it had no GPS.

It's Google Maps, not Google GPS.

Edit: (quote above from apple), well, I stand corrected.

Regardless, maybe they should just slap a warning on it to say, "iPhone not recommended for use by those lacking common sense".

I do it all the time. I also text and look up sports scores.

There is little difference between using the iPhone as a GPS and a car mount as a GPS. You still have to take your eyes off the road.

The problem here is Apple have given us an ALMOST usable sat Nav. It's far easier to use this as an ALMOST working sat nav than plan your journey the old fashion way. What is the point of me buying a real Sat Nav when apple and others keep dangling the Sat Nav carrot in-front of our noses. The current system is illegal, very dangerous but I feel compelled to use it. I think you all know im right and im certainly no idiot. Just wish apple would sort it one way or the other. Tell me it's never gonna happen and ill get a true sat nav. Until then i have to use maps.

The current system is illegal.

So what's the punishment? Jail? Fine? Community Service?

What defines the iPhone GPS to any other phone with GPS? What about systems built into the dash where you STILL have to input data?

In addition to being useful for planning a journey, as some have already pointed out, it can be used by a PASSENGER who is helping the driver to find the way.

Someone who is capable of being upset about Apple not being able to foresee that he'll do things simply because no one tells him not to, should probably not be allowed to drive a car to begin with.

minimum of £30 fine.

The new law could lead to fines of up to £1000 for offenders if the matter goes to court. The penalties are stiffer for the drivers of buses, coaches, vans and lorries, who face a possible maximum of a £2500 fine. Drivers won't get points on their license - yet. The Government plans to increase the penalty to £60 + 3 penalty points in the future, when parliamentary time allows.

To be fair, everything in the UK is illegal nowadays...but i probably agree with this law ; )

Yes I will.

I agree I was stupid,

I was stupid to use something on my iphone which apple has provided for this purpose.

Sorry, I wasn't meaning it was your fault, but since Apple hasn't provided a safe way to use the App while driving and may not for the near future, it would make since to buy a device designed to be used in the car.

"it is illegal to drive while using a mobile phone"

Article only mentions using the phone and texting is illegal. says nothing about GPS, using your iPhone is a music player for car audio, or anything else.

So no, it's legal.

Driving is dangerous. People normally do dangerous things. People like to do dangerous things, and encourage other people to do these things as well, such as periodically getting in the bathtub or shower.

Just talking to a passenger in the car about some heated topic can often be more dangerous than playing with some coffee cup, map or device while driving. But there's no law against talking. So expect this and drive defensively.

imo.

I agree. It's pretty much common sense. If you know you aren't a good multi tasker then just don't take the risk. I'm a risk taker myself, and to be honest when I'm driving, I have never been close to causing an accident while on the phone. I would cause a crash from day dreaming before I get in a crash from using my phone. I'm probably jinxing myself right now but ehhh

Ignorance is bliss.
