I can't keep track of all the droid phones. There seems to be a new one every week.

li for one would be all over the nexus prime if there was any certainty at all about a sprint release date

Ya, I'd get rid of my iPhone 4S preorder if I knew the Nexus was coming to sprint, but it doesn't look like it.

Nexus-Prime is a true next gen device, the iPhone4S is so sad to see come from Apple, it is basically a re-released iPhone4, same shell, same thickness, same screen, same battery, same OS with a screen full of app icons.

I am still in shock that they even came out with this 4S after 16 months, I would've bet big time there would be a fully new iPhone5 with 4" screen, etc...or worst case if a revised iPhoen4.5 I still expected Apple to update it a bit more, like thinner, or touting a brand new battery tech, or slightly updated screen tech. But to release pretty much the exact same iPhone4 again, is unbelievable. And just proves that Apple is obviously all about making money #1.
Okay, this argument has been done to death around here but let me try again. But first...You just don't get it!

The current design of the iPhone might quite possibly be the perfect design for the iPhone. It is possible that you will never see anything bigger than the current 3.5" screen. I was at first also disappointed that there was no redesign and bigger screen but the more I thought about it the more I started comparing my 4.3" EVO to my iPod Touch 4th gen. I decided to start using my touch for everything I was using my EVO for except of course texting and phone calls. So since Wednesday I've been using my touch exclusively.

I came to the conclusion that it didn't make any difference in terms of user experience. When I picked up my EVO for the first time in a couple days it suddenly felt clunky, much to my surprise. I also found it's a lot easier to navigate the smaller screen than it it is on the bigger EVO when only using one hand.

Maybe Apple has something here? Maybe they gave this a lot more thought than most people give them credit for? Maybe we will never see anything bigger than 3.5"? Maybe 3.5" is the perfect size for a smartphone.

If Apple had changed the outer skin of the iPhone and gave you a slightly bigger screen but had all the same upgrades as the iPhone4S would you then be singing their praises? Of course you would. The perception here is that just because they didn't change the design it somehow is inferior to newer Androids. What if it had the same size screen but a new design? What then?

Fine I'll give you that a lot of Android phones have a more "Powerful" processor. Maybe they have more RAM. But they still have Android and while Android is a lot better than it used to be it's still not as rock solid as iOS. I have had a number of embarrassing moments. Like when I was trying to sign up a new client and I'm trying to show him some samples of my work and BAM, freeze>>>pull battery>>>reboot. Niiice
Or the time I was trying to take pictures of my granddaughter taking her first steps and BAM spontaneous reboot. Yeah thats awesome and fun!!

Apple doesn't need to use the same hardware that Android phones use because they control the entire development process. They design the software to work with the hardware and they design the hardware to work with the software. Android cannot achieve that level of integration.

And please, for all those people wanting widgets. Widgets are way OVERRATED. They suck battery life and get old real fast. The only useful one I ever had was the click. It's big and bright and that's cool. I have no widgets because I value battery life over "coooool"!

I'm buying my first iPhone this week because Sprint just got it and I can finally have the best phone on the planet.

And to the OP, you should buy what you want. It's your money and you're the one that has to use it. Who knows, maybe the new Android phone you buy will be awesome and you'll love it. Maybe not. In any case in all seriousness enjoy it :)

@OP: If this is the Nexus Prime, it doesn't look very impressive. Whatever makes you happy.

If you mean...it isnt a professional commercial that costs thousands of dollars to make it look absolutely awesome, ...than you are correct.

Did you notice there was no sound and just some dude flipping through a couple of pages with no explanation of what he was doing?

Oh you did? So did i

Im not even sure that was a Nexus Prime since there was, you know...no sound.

If i see this type of thread and responses with Nexus Prime and 4S then i will not be buying the prime. Battery life is huge to me and i hate lugging extra stuff. A 4.65 screen would be heaven but eat battery crazy.

Notice how xda Nexus S users confirm that the Nexus was not optimized for best battery life. Not to say prime will not be, but this was disappointing to me after i switched to android for another time. Music play back losing 20% of battery is not the kind of thing i am looking forward to.

Again, not bashing anything. It is a trade-off. Bigger screen vs. more time between charges. I would take the longer time. I hope google figures a way to make the next Nexus a powerhouse in terms of battery life. Specs are cool but really unneeded at this point.

Also, I have yet to see a single android OEM listing battery life as one of their features to pick over another OEM. Looks like it is something they are not interested it. Sad really.

Agreed on all your points. The battery life of a single charge on an Android phone is not up to iPhone standards :(

BUT...

You can always get a spare battery and a wall charger for the spare so that you actually end up with even more overall battery life than an iPhone for an extra $20 or so. Not the most ideal solution but I always calculate buying a spare battery with any Android device I buy as a backup. Makes it really easy :)

Yeah that works fine. But the issue with me is I almost always forget to pack any thing "extra". Also charging two batteries means i have to manage both now and that is sort of extra work.

If ICS helps on this I might have a look at the new androids or maybe the prime but so far battery life doesn't seem to be the focus in any body's mind right now and we know samsung would rather flash their SAMOLEDs and other ultra thin stuff than battery.

Sometimes i wish the current nexus was from motorola. They do get the basics right at least.

The battery life is a non issue on newer Android devices compared to the iPhone4. Read Anandtech's article, he lists the newer Motorola phones as being slightly better/longer for battery life than the iPhone4, and the new U.S. Galaxy S II's are rocking very good battery life for such a big display.

You guys act like the iPhone4 is from God, and can last 3 days with heavy use or something

And with Android 4.0 "Ice Cream", the OS is supposed to be even more efficient.

Source? or it isn't true...

Being an Android user for the last year and a half and having used the Original Droid, Droid X and Droid X2 (yes I know all motorola's), I can honestly say that they all are lacking (the Samsung screens are nice, although I find them to be over saturated). Seriously, I've gone from a 550mhz single core processor, to a 1 ghz single core proc, to a dual core 1 ghz proc and each time the OS still feels sluggish. How is that possible?!?! How is it that I still haven't found on the X2 as decent experience as the original iPad which pushes more pixels with less "power"..... I've given up and going to an iPhone 4S.

I don't care what the benchmarks state about which one is fastest, which one pushes the most polygons, etc... I don't game a lot on my phone. What I do care about, is that when I need to answer a call my phone actually responds! Or when I want to unlock my phone to send a text, it doesn't just sit there for 30 seconds while it decides what to do.

And seriously, widgets are not all that great. Other than the switches to turn my wifi on/off, I never use them. Half the weather ones do not even update regularly and the facebook/twitter ones that track specific friends just eat my battery life and I still end up accessing the Facebook and/or Twitter apps because I want to know what everyone is doing and not just the 4-5 I have specifically given "space" too in a widget.

Feel free to buy what you want, but I want a device where the same people who build the phone, make the OS and can build in proper drivers for everything and make the most of the hardware. I don't care what has more memory, faster processors, better GPU's.... I just want my phone to work!

Edit: The one thing that Android had over iOS was the notification system (I hate the simple pop ups). They fixed that with iOS 5 and now I am jumping the Android Ship (and the money pit it has been for me, trying to find a decent phone).

Lol. Yeah right. Nexus Prime with a 4.65 screen and LTE will last longer than the iPhone. Okay. :roll eyes:

I have a Galaxy S2 with the samsung made 2000 battery and samsung made back cover. Doesn't last as long as my iPhone 4.

My iPhone 4 can last two days with average use, a whole day with extensive use. My galaxy S2 with the regular battery cannot last a work day with average use.

You get the picture.

Oh as for the Android phones being faster than the iPhone 4S think again.

First off, know I have two lines. A Verizon and an ATT line. Currently I have my iPhone 4 on AT&T and a suspended dumb phone on VZW. I have an upgrade eligible on VZW, and there is no way I am buying a spec bump phone when I already have the ip4, so I think I am going to go with the Prime.

Anyone else debating the prime against the 4s? I never thought I would be saying this....

I will still have an iPhone so maybe I won't feel so bad....

Anyone?

Looks like you have a lot of Apple products there. Getting the droid you will be off the Apple eco-system of apps/music/os. A phone is much more than hardware. Hardware gets old the minute it leaves the factory. You have to look at the operating system and apps.

The current design of the iPhone might quite possibly be the perfect design for the iPhone. It is possible that you will never see anything bigger than the current 3.5" screen. It's ironic you would post this as I've been doing the very same thing with my Droid X and my wife's iphone 4 for the past week. While I agree that Android has issues with screen freezes and random reboots, and ALWAYS at the worst times, lack of refined apps and clunky UI, I disagree with the screen. I want an iphone so that I can integrate into the iTunes ecosystem that we have as a family. Hell, thousands of my hard earned dollars have gone into it over the years purchasing music (can ANYONE pass up the Beatles box set?) and I'd really like to be able to use it on my phone. But the screen is really, really giving me trouble. I've found myself several times putting the iphone down and grabbing my Droid X because the 3.5" screen is just too frustrating for me. I'm in my 40's and like many of us in that age group and older, my vision is not what it once was. In order to use the iphone with any amount of comfort I MUST use reading glasses. Yes, there is that much difference for ME. So while many people are very content with the 3.5" screen, there are many of us who would like to switch to an iphone (or already have one) who would very much like a larger display. Honestly, the ONLY thing keeping me getting an iphone right now, today, is the screen size. In it's 3.5" version, it's simply unusable to ME. In the meantime I'll stick with my Droid X, continue to use my daughters iPod when I want to listen to music and continue to hope that Apple upgrades the screen on the iphone. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Wow, well said! I've owned the exact same phones and this is how I feel. I couldn't have said it better myself. Every complaint about android I had, you mentioned. I too, am switching from a Droid X2 to an iPhone 4s. Cheers mate.

Only thing I will truly miss is google navigation, but it's not like I need it with me at all times, I can buy a gps for my car. Oh, and a bigger screen wouldn't hurt either. Personally, I think 4 inches might be the sweet spot but I guess we'll never know.

Glad I'm not the only one that has felt this way. Even my wife, who hated everything Apple is ready to drop her Droid X. If only she was ready for an upgrade (maybe I'll just get her the iPhone 4). I too will miss the navigation, but then again I rarely used it (maybe once a month?). I'll deal with the loss....

I'm really looking forward to integrating my phone into my daily life. All of my cars and audio equipment, are iPod ready so it'll be nice to use my phone for all of it instead of hauling an iPod + phone....

I will admit that in 2010 the iPhone4 was hands down the best smartphone for long battery life, but as of Summer 2011, these new high end dual core Android phones running Gingerbread have gotten much better. Look at the EVO 4G which sucked at like 4 hours 3G talk time, now a year later the EVO-3D is rated at almost double.

And the big update Android 4.0 "Ice Cream" is supposed to make the OS even more efficient and give it better battery life.

Bottom line is, all these phones still suck as far as battery life goes. I would like to see a phone I can bring on camping trip for several days, watch movies, text people, read online sites, e-mail, etc...and not have the battery die after 3 days of that kind of use. Now that would be IMPRESSIVE.

Narrow and thick? Is that possible? ;)

----------

Im not bashing you, just correcting for those who dont know. Im going to be getting the Nexus Prime as well :)

Easily...

It may come as a shock, but all smartphones exist along three axes. "Narrow" vs "Wide" usually refers to one axis (lets call it X). "Tall" vs "Short" usually refers to a second axis (lets call it Y). "Thick" vs "Thin" usually refers to a magical third axis that we will call "Z."

Narrow and thick certainly sounds more durable than wide and thin.

NOTE: I am offering no opinion about the build quality of popular android devices - I've never held them. However, my 3gs feels significantly more sturdy than any of my Blackberries ever did.
