Hopefully this speeds development of an iPad version and the addition of Gmail features (labels, etc. - seems only natural since the service is tied to Gmail to begin with).

I don't think Mailbox does anything, really, you can't already do with any regular IMAP client, or just with Gmail — but what it does do is make it very easy to quickly triage incoming mail. It's not magical, but it has a pretty solid interface.

What Dropbox probably means is better server infrastructure behind it, a faster rollout (hopefully) and probably some Dropbox sharing and attachment-based features down the road.

I already have a TON of documents in Dropbox already, so the paranoia factor is a moot point.

...Dropbox's server infrastructure is Amazon's S3 infrastructure.

Mailbox is by far and away the best virtual queuing app i have ever used, i fire it up and watch the number slowly ticking down when i feel nostalgic about when i used to use post offices to send things places. Ill be sorry to reach the end of the queue, not interested in another secuirty risk and third party holding my username and password for my emails . :D

Wow. The Mailbox stunt paid off.

To elaborate on the "stunt" comment:

You signed up to a waiting list. Eventually this waiting list got you a code. You put the code in their app and it put in you a massive queue.

If you managed some how to actually get to use the app - you may have been disappointed.
In fact, the Mailbox app angered a lot of people because it requires full access to your Gmail account (which raises privacy concerns), and it requires you to mess with IMAP folder visibility (it needs "All Folder" access).
I've had access for quite a while - but I do not use it, as I refuse to change my IMAP settings to make it work. I already use Gmail (without issue) with other programs.

Apparently all the hype got the attention of the right people.

Yeah, I installed after reading the headline (not the article nor the comments) and was at 500000-ish in the queue. After a few days, I was at 480000-ish... so delete world it is....

And now that I read this, I won't ever bother again...

Huh? Dropbox has consistently been more useful and polished, and hence light years ahead of iCloud. What else do you want Dropbox to become?

Perhaps they will drop Mailbox's dependence on other email services (gmail) and start their own.

You clearly misread what I wrote.
