With 1TB free at flickr why use google or dropbox for storage?

You are right. Didn't realize Flickr offered the 'never-ending camera roll' functionality for iOS as well. At 1TB, that seems like a pretty good solution for those short on Dropbox space.

Apple really missed the boat by not having any of this functionality built in with the native Camera Roll + iCloud. iCloud only mirrors the photos that are physically on your device.

The Photostream feature that syncs 1000 recent photos is just a cluster. That should be relegated for creating shared albums only.

I use Flickr + Flickring app by Pixite. EXCELLENT combo.

I use Google Drive as a 2nd backup for the actual files, since Flickr traps your files within their site when you upload them.
So you can't just bulk download the files back down from Flickr? That is lame and not the same as what Dropbox offers then.

Pretty excited about Mailbox for Mac. Adobe also used to call their photo storage service Carousel too. So not sure what's up with that...

I will continue to use Adobe's solution because it's free for up to 50 photos. Plus I have OneDrive storage. So that's enough for my needs.

You have to use a separate app for this. Flickr only allows 1 by 1. I use Mac App Stores F-Stop app to for all my desktop uploading needs (as it's not limited by only 200 photos they way Flickr does it) because it'll take my folders and automatically make it into a set on Flickr.

I prefer to also have Google Drive (or in the past Dropbox) for the actual files because I'm not sure where Yahoo is going (I don't think Flickr is going anywhere anytime soon though) with Flickr. None of the big companies responded to their free 1TB offer so I guess Google, MS, Apple, etc. aren't too worried about them.

I do wish Google would add to Drive:

1) Auto uploads; yes the G+ app does it but those photos go to a private folder on G+ and not in Drive.

2) A seperate app for viewing photos. Since photos that I have in Drive automatically show up in G+ and Picasa (privately) I use photo viewers to view the files are the Drive app itself. I rather have a dedicated Google Photos app.

Is there anything like this that lets you use YOUR OWN SERVER instead of having to depend on a cloud provider?

I own two very well connected servers with ****loads of disk space. They back up to each other and to a third offsite system. Several TB even. Why can't I use my OWN machines? Everything is cloud this, cloud that. Ugh.

owncloud.

I wish there something in iOS to let these apps auto-delete the camera roll... I want all my pix to get uploaded to a service, and I want them off of my phone.

Check out Bittorrent Sync / BTSync. It's awesome. That's what I use.

Does anyone use Mailbox as their iOS email client? How is it?

I love it. It does help keep my inbox empty. Having said that, I am not a power user, and everything is not perfect (i.e. accessing 'drafts' folder). Geotagging (as I understand it) would also be a wonderful feature.

Having said that, it's very well organized, easy to use and I utilize the scheduling function constantly.

End result - I read and act on emails much more efficiently than I have in the past.

This appears to be what Photo Stream and iPhoto and iCloud should have been doing all along. That ecosystem is broken. Most users I encounter don't understand it.

"I backed up my photos to iTunes"
"Oh, Photo Stream doesn't take care of my videos? How do I back those up?"

Yet another one that thinks Apple, Dropbox, and Microsoft don't mine your data.

Could you provide proof of apple mining data to sell to advertisers like google do. I suspect you are just trying to lower other companys to googles level to justify what google do with your data.

Great. Now how about a pricing model that makes sense? Something in between 2 gb and 100gb...

I know you can get tons of space by doing x and y but some people are willing to pay for a little more.

Use BoxCryptor. Done.

Doesn't that render any app that uses Dropbox API's essentially useless?

Yes, Apple is a primarily a hardware company, but they indeed sell your data to advertisers (iAd). To make sure users only see ads which might interest them, Apple studies the data from their iPhones to see what the user does and doesn’t like.

Here's your proof, Apple even provides something on their official website that allows you to opt out. I imagine that 99.9% of iOS users don't even know about this feature, so I doubt it's effective.

Now they say you can turn it off, but I doubt it. They might just have that "option" for the user to develop some psychological feeling of their data belonging only to them.

:D

Thanks for the info. I actually think Dropbox offers the simplest and cleanest solution, but it costs 99 bucks a year for the 100gig option.

Looking forward to mailbox for my mac, It resides on my dock on the ipad and phone. I use my Synology Nas for my phone snaps backups/sharing, I gave up with photosharing for much some time ago. Happy to keep to Flickr for DSLR pics.

Yep, sort of along the same lines with what a couple of us have discussed. If Apple would have just done this natively with Photos + iCloud, it wouldn't really matter. Your actual device could just be caching maybe 500mb of photo data, with everything just rolling off into iCloud automatically.

Music/iTunes Match basically already works like this for crying out loud!

Well… interesting! I did think that some sort of reply had to come from Dropbox, to set them apart front the can of digital woop-ass that copy.com has opened on them! ;-) And when apparently Dropbox have no intent on changing the by now ridiculously low free amount given, or the mindless full data count for all within a shared folder... then photos and special utilities are really all that's left!

If anyone interested… go check out copy.com! I have been running around with my hands in the air ever since I stumbled across this service a few months ago! Free 15GB out of the box, another 5BG in the bank if you are being reffered - 5GB given for a referral and no upper limit as to how much referrals you can collect - The data count for a shared folder is divided equally by all participants - and a fantastic backend control panel to control all files, folders and shares!

Haha… I actually sound pretty overly enthusiastic I can hear! ;-) Sorry about that! Not being payed for a it… just pretty god damn pleased with the service offered!

btw… if anyone wants a referral (and the extra 5GB), let me know! ;-)

Apple using location data is hardly of the same level as google harvesting user data from using Android, email anything google etc.

As for the opt out well i flicked that switch a long time ago the iAds i get are very random with no relevance to me so it looks like the off switch does work or i would be getting ads better targeted to me.

Then I'm going to ask your for proof. I think the illusion you have is that Google makes it well known what they are doing, while others try to hide it or not talk about it. Apple is mining your data people. So is Amazon, so is Dropbox.

Aside from my iTunes Store purchases, what else is Apple mining? Are they reading my email and serving advertisements to me in the iCloud mail web interface the way Google does with Gmail?
