Aside from my iTunes Store purchases, what else is Apple mining? Are they reading my email and serving advertisements to me in the iCloud mail web interface the way Google does with Gmail?
If they aren't serving ads does that mean they aren't reading emails that are on their servers? How would we really know, especially given how many times things have been shown to be otherwise by all kinds of services/companies despite what might be in their terms of service or whatnot.

Apple using location data is hardly of the same level as google harvesting user data from using Android, email anything google etc.

As for the opt out well i flicked that switch a long time ago the iAds i get are very random with no relevance to me so it looks like the off switch does work or i would be getting ads better targeted to me.

Apple is primarily a Hardware company, and Google is primarily a free internet service who's business model is based off Advertising. What do you expect, seriously?

Can someone explain why is this a front page article? There are tons of noteworthy third party apps out there and these are featured? I could not care less about dropbox, its core product works for me but I would never use any of these things.

Because millions of iPhone users have Mailbox as their primary email app, perhaps? I have been on tinder hooks for an OS X version for ages. Mail is one of the few stock apps on both iOS and OS X that I'm not quite happy with. I don't use Dropbox for photos, but I'm still very glad to have read this news and signed up for the OS X beta.

Here's another vote for "would use, but dropbox too expensive." I don't understand how they can still survive with that pricing model. Scratch that - they're brilliant in many other ways. But they could be that much better with lower prices. Reams of people would pay to upgrade.

How do you think those iAds are getting to you?

What do you think Apple's hush hush purchase of Topsy was for?

Through iTunes store purchases or location data, but they aren't reading our mail.

Well… interesting! I did think that some sort of reply had to come from Dropbox, to set them apart front the can of digital woop-ass that copy.com has opened on them! ;-) And when apparently Dropbox have no intent on changing the by now ridiculously low free amount given, or the mindless full data count for all within a shared folder... then photos and special utilities are really all that's left!

If anyone interested… go check out copy.com! I have been running around with my hands in the air ever since I stumbled across this service a few months ago! Free 15GB out of the box, another 5BG in the bank if you are being reffered - 5GB given for a referral and no upper limit as to how much referrals you can collect - The data count for a shared folder is divided equally by all participants - and a fantastic backend control panel to control all files, folders and shares!

Haha… I actually sound pretty overly enthusiastic I can hear! ;-) Sorry about that! Not being payed for a it… just pretty god damn pleased with the service offered!

btw… if anyone wants a referral (and the extra 5GB), let me know! ;-)

Thanks for the heads up about Copy :). I moved all the data I had in storage on Google Drive to Copy and dumped Google. So happy, as I never liked having any data stored there, but they gave the most free space - until now. Copy is new and there are improvements to be made, like full reading of files (PDF's and Docs for example) and the iOS app needs an "open in" option added, but they'll get there. Too bad, I didn't notice your referral offer before I created my account :-(

Not everything is about cost.

Dropbox is faster and doesn't screw up my data like Google Drive & OneDrive did. Dropbox also allows LAN sync which ensures my data can sync across my LAN at home.

Imagine dropping 10GB of photos in my Dropbox folder. Just 10GB of data is used to send it to the cloud, using my LAN the data is then synced to all my other devices (7 of them).

Doing the same task on OneDrive and Google would mean the data has to go into the cloud and then 10GB per machine gets slowly pushed to each device on my network taking hours.

Dropbox wins. It's the best in my eyes.

How do you/we know they aren't reading it at least even on some automated level? People are more than fine assuming Google or other services do it, so it's more than fair and prudent to say that any free online service can do it and perhaps even paid ones unless some specific encryption and security is truly touted and has been confirmed. No one says to panic or anything like that of course, but at the same time ignoring that extremely likely possibility isn't the smartest thing either.

I'm surprised Dropbox didn't announce price cuts.

This is the 2nd or 3rd time Amazon has dropped their prices and Dropbox hasn't adjusted their offerings to pass along to consumers.

I guess they must be taking that 60% reduction in cost to improve their profits, since they are about to go public with stock.

Store your files in an encrypted container. Problem solved. Dropbox won't be able to compete on price since they use a middleman for storage.

IMO, dropbox has the first-mover advantage of being a household name which everyone associates with for cloud storage.

To share my personal experience in a school, everyone is using dropbox, even the much less tech-savvy people. I don't think many people are aware that Google Drive can be used to store files; most seem to view it as a rebranded Google Docs.

It just started with one systems administrator who started using dropbox to start disseminating files, and pretty soon, everyone was on dropbox. Sure, there are many other alternatives, and some likely offer better deals, but nobody is going to bother with the hassle of switching and migrating all their data across.

I do t like Rice, but I currently only have ios devices and until the end of the year I'll be only on my iOS devices running my life...

Is carousel still available to download? I never got a chance to download it and wanna see how the automatic uploading works, even if it does it in the background...

It's still there in the iOS store as it was just released. I believe the automatic uploading works about the same way that it does in the Dropbox app itself.

Is there anything like this that lets you use YOUR OWN SERVER instead of having to depend on a cloud provider?

I own two very well connected servers with ****loads of disk space. They back up to each other and to a third offsite system. Several TB even. Why can't I use my OWN machines? Everything is cloud this, cloud that. Ugh.

Bittorrent Sync looks pretty interesting in this regard.

Oops already suggested.

Guess this isn't a big deal since your post was overlooked. and nobody responded.

To me, it speaks volume about the management style of Drop Box, and how that style doesn't match my own personal views.

So Long Dropbox. Hello G Drive.

I read this on their blog post and started looking for alternatives.
It just made it clear I was a user they had no room for as a customer.

I guess they are sticking with the $1/GB service. They just bought Loom.com to help with their photo services.

I wish OneDrive and Copy.com would do more with their services. As of now, they just store your files.

Dropbox and Google Drive have much more value, with GDrive being more bang for your buck.

So is anyone using Carousel here, and how have your experiences been so far?

My experience has been far from great. I signed in, and Carousel promptly began to upload all my photos. There was no way of stopping this process, beyond signing out or turning off camera roll access in the settings. Not sure if Dropbox simply wanted to simplify the process, make users bust their storage caps so they would upgrade, or both?

There is also no way to selectively choose what photos you want to upload. Half of the stuff on my iPhone are screenshots or work-related photos which I have no interest in preserving (but are there because I never got round to deleting them). They really should take a page from Launch Centre Pro and let you automate the process of uploading select photos to share / link to.

Not to mention it is currently iPhone-only. Sorry, but I am sticking with shard photostreams for now.

I put a year's worth of photos on it since I have the space (free account nowadays) so I can see how it works.

Frankly, it does what all the other photo share apps (Everpix, Loom, Picturelife, Pixite apps, etc.) do - display photos. They tried to add a social aspect to it, but I don't know anyone that shares photos with Dropbox on a casual basis. Again, Facebook is still the go-to for 99% of the people for this.

Dropbox STILL hasn't solved the ability to let me only see my photos instead of random photos I've taken as notes. I keep a folder based structure in the Pictures folder for each year (Photos>2014) so I'm not sure why they don't enable users to have a certain set of folder show up in the photos tab or Carousel.

The problem with this photo management apps is that once your photos are uploaded...that's it, you can share and display. Unless you're doing that, the app (like the other apps of this type) is useless, unless you like scolling through your pics all day. It's really no different than how I was using the Dropbox app.

Also, Carousel doesn't use your folders as albums - it's only a timeline view.
I guess are those albums I created on the Dropbox website are useless (didn't have many, but tested it out a few times - I mainly stuck to the timeline view; hence why Carousel probably only has a time line view, lol).

I did get 5GB more Dropbox space for exporting my Loom account to Dropbox, giving me a total of 28GB. Unfortunately, I have 35GB worth of photos. I simply can't continue to pay for Dropbox at these prices and questionable board members. Especially when Google Drive+Pixite's Web Albums app or Flickr+Pixite's Flickering app does the same thing for 75%-100% less (and let's me select the folders I wish to use instead of lumping anything and everything with a .jpg extension into the app).
