I called apple the same day made an appointment and they switched out my phone for $200... :(... oh well ***** happens..but atleast i got a new phone as well... my serial # start at 880..

The Genius probably thought your accent was sexy and cut you a break.

DIY Repair

So has anyone dropped their iPhone and replaced the front display themselves? I have found multiple sites with instructions on how to do it, as well as multiple places to acquire the new parts needed, but I am still fearful of doing it myself.

I'm 2+ hours from an apple store and I don;t want to make the drive for a slight chance that it would be replaced for free (I have no sexy foreign accent ;)) I know DIY voids my warranty, but if I dropped the phone breaking it myself the warranty is no good to me anyways.

Any suggestions, stories or tips on replacing it at home?

Thanks!

Cool. It really is a brand new phone too. I went into an apple store recently and all they had in the black boxes were refurbs (they all had 5k serials).

Does the first 3 digits mean how new they are? I got a replacement from apple 2 weeks ago that is 870. Do u think that means its new and not refurbed?

Don't risk it

I wouldn't risk going to the Apple Store. As long as you only replace the front display and don't start undoing other things (like I would :S) then you should be fine.

At the end of the day it is your choice.....

Problems?

Wouldn't getting an inactive iPhone from the States and locking it to a UK network cause troubles later.

For example you perform the aforementioned with an O2 SIM, at the end of your contract or whenever you decide you want to unlock your phone from O2 and move to 3.

You follow the O2/Apple official unlock process and become hampered, as your iPhone serial number is not one associated with an "O2 iPhone batch". Such a thing must exist as anyone with an O2 contract could then unlock a multitude of foreign iPhones or iPhones from competitors.

I had a dream last night that my iPhone 4 got dropped and the glass shattered. However it was weird because when I went to look at it, it had morphed into some horrible hinged clamshell design.

I was fretting having to hope that Apple would replace my phone for free, but then I woke up.

I think there is something wrong with me.

I am a bit late posting this, sorry I just kept forgetting to post.

Precisely 2 weeks and 6 days ago my iPhone 4 accidentally fell out of my hand whilst trying to open a bottle lid (my fault I know). The next day I was off on holiday! I picked it up only to see that the glass back panel had smashed, no big deal. After a bit of research I found that it isn't covered under warranty but it is covered under my O2 insurance. I was shocked to find that I would have to pay £75 as an excess fee to get it fixed. The good news was they could have a replacement phone to me within 24 hours!

However..... I was off on holiday the next day (under 24 hours away). After a long 10 hour 20 minute flight.... back on topic... Before I left for my holiday I booked a Genius Bar appointment at Apple Store, San Francisco.

The replacement and repair of the glass would have cost $199 which is outrageous but they don't keep parts in so I couldn't go for that option.

I can't remember who I was served by but he was extremely helpful. He didn't seem shocked that the back panel was smashed (they obviously have a lot of them) but he explained that they don't keep parts etc.

He then said "As you are on vacation I can give you a replacement iPhone 4"

So I went into the Apple store with a working smashed back panel iPhone 4 and cam out with a BRAND NEW iPhone 4 for absolutely nothing.

Thanks, Tim

This just shows that Apple really does love their users, they have surprised and delighted me.

I agree i think your charming accent led to this. I bet if you talked to me my puccy would moist.

iPhones sold in the US are indeed locked to AT&T per the Apple store in Houston's Memorial City mall...but I know someone who has one working on Tmobile's EDGE...it certainly wasn't purchased unlocked though

by new replacement, you mean a refurbished unit :)

Does it still drop calls / have the reception problem?

No I do not mean refurbished, it is brand new just not one they would sell to you (this is why it was unlocked until activated)

Yes they are BUT it was not sold to me, it was a replacement phone from a black box presumably straight from Apple rather that going though an unlock process. The reason why they do not tell you these are unlocked is because then you could use it on another network, this is also why they would usually activated it in store. I could have used any network if I wanted to but I already had a contract with O2 UK.

I live in an area of extremely low signal strength so as of yet I haven't tested. I never usually get signal at home.

I'm happy for your positive story, I wish I could relate. Unfortunately, both of my two visits to the "genius bar" have only been frustrating and ended in disappointment. It always seems like i'm booking a meeting with an adversarial bigot than a helpful hand of apple :-(

everyone read

all phones are UNLOCKED when Apple ships them out, and then LOCKED by Apple using the IMEI.

this is the process that is used in Canada and I'm sure is the same in the states.

if someone could somehow get access to this database, it'd be a nightmare for carriers ;)

don't ask how I know

But you can still switch to any carrier at anytime.

Here is an excerpt of the FAQ page:

It works with the carrier of your choice.
Buy your iPhone from the Apple Online Store and choose your own GSM carrier. You can change carriers at any time.

I don't think so. My two iphones came in shrink wrapped boxes and the AT&T rep activated them in front of me. He didn't put a sim card in the phone, it already had it. All he had to do was open the box and attach it to itunes to activate it. I think the ones Apple sells in the states are all locked from the factory to AT&T.

If I cancel my plan with my current courrier.. will my iphone be unlocked in order to use another courrier?
