Its because Apple have such a generous returns policy if products go wrong, consumers then feel they can be cheeky if they make a mistake themselves I suppose.

Yup, and just like Costco they're realizing that while many of their customers are honest, the spike in people trying to cheat them isn't worth having some of the best CS when it comes to being lenient with fixing and replacing devices. Next time anyone wants to complain about it they can address people like the OP, not Apple.

The morality of it is up for debate here, obviously. But I'll put my 2 cents in that isn't whether getting Apple to replace your damaged phone is right or wrong.

I had my iPhone 4 in my pocket and mistakenly decided to move down a step into our pool and got it soaked. I immediately realized what I'd done and started the process (power off, rice, etc). Day later, no dice. I decided to give the Apple Store a try. I went in, said it wouldn't start up. They verified a water sensor had been tripped but since it was still under warranty they gave me a new replacement. Had that one up to the day I sold it after the iPhone 5 came out, no issues.

TL;DR - Just go in and explain what happened. Worst they can do is say no. But you might get lucky and walk out with a new one.

I know its a lie, but tbh, i want what i paid for, paying 600+ dollars for a phone is a little much, im paying for the brand logo not for the actual parts. I feel i should be allowed to since i did pay way more than the phone is worth. It isnt like apple is anywhere close to being bankrupt. I wasnt careless im VERY careful with my devices, i love em to death. But it was in my pocket i was even using it and it dropped out. I hate shorts.

----------

Also I hate how they dont cover water damage, why cant they add that in Apple care...i would happily buy it if i did.

This is why we need to bring back the down vote.

Wow. 200$ for a brand new iPhone 5 replacement? That's like a gift in my opinion. In Denmark you would have to pay more like 700-750$ for a replacement at your provider if you break your phone yourself.

I mean if they ask about the water sensors, cant i say it was because of the water condensation while i was taking a shower? i dont want to pay another 200 dollars. But im really distraught right now. :(:(:(

Should've been more careful.

And there's nothing to be scared about. Just learn from your mistake and if you can't afford the $200 bucks, get a flip phone or something to hold you over until you get a job when you turn 16.

As adults ...

Might be a bit of an assumption.

You got what you paid for, then you were a klutz and dropped it into a toilet. That's not anyone's problem but yours. And you didn't pay more than what the phone is worth, you paid what you felt was a fair price for a product. If you thought $600 was "a little much", you should have never purchased the phone. End of transaction. You're obviously irresponsible with your money and the things you purchase with it. Grow up. You're gonna have a tough time in this world with your attitude.

And they DO add it to AppleCare. It's called AppleCare Plus.

I did the same thing as you with the original iPhone. Thankfully it was 2010 and the iPhone 4 was about to be announced and I was able to get a prepaid phone until then.

Moral of the story is, don't keep your iPhone in your back pocket. ;)

Luckily, the thing was already suffering from battery issues and had been dropped a few months earlier. I was having to put it in the freezer to fix the wifi too.

Memories.

Don't lie. It'll come back to bite you.

No offense intended but it was your choice to spend $600 on a phone. If you felt you were over-paying you could have bought a different phone. It was also your fault you dropped the phone in the toilet, Apple didn't make you put it in a pocket it could fall so easily out of. So why should they shoulder that cost. Be honest, take responsibility for your own actions, and pay the $200

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

you want what you paid for? You got what you paid for. Just because you broke it, how does that mean Apple owes you a second phone?

If $600 was too much, why did you buy it? So the millions of dollars Apple spends to make the iPhone doesn't mean anything?

So because a company is doing financially well, you deserve to get a brand new phone for free? I'm doing really well and no where near bankrupt..should I give you some free stuff too?

It doesn't matter if you're "ALWAYS" careful with your devices. This time you were not nor does it matter that you hate shorts.

Get real. You're the reason why retailers are becoming more stringent with their return policys.

I assume you either have asburgers or you are mentally handicapped so I think people on this forum should be kinder to your posts.

I dropped my iPhone 5 in the toilet it was in my shorts pocket and as I was getting up it slipped out and went straight into the toilet. I grabbed it very quickly, (there was no excrement). i knew i had ot turn it off so i turned it off fast and i wiped it down and used a compressed air can to get rid of water form the crevices. I put it in a bowl of rice and everything. I am really scared. I was wondering if i took it into the apple store, and said that it was only on the shelf while i was taking a shower. would they be able to replace it?

So you sit down to pee?

Apple would very soon find themselves losing money hand over fist if they took responsibility for peoples mistakes. I appreciate you didn't mean to ruin your phone, but that is hardly Apple's problem is it? Why should they foot the bill for your mistakes? Saying that you paid more than the phone is worth is just your opinion. If the phone was not worth the money then nobody would be buying them. You made the choice to purchase an iPhone and were not forced to. You obviously took the decision it was the phone you wanted, therefore this justified the price you paid.

Sorry but this is a lesson and if you pay $200 (or whatever it is over there) for a replacement, you'll be a lot more careful in future and may think twice about taking your phone into a bathroom. Bite the bullet and take responsibility.
