my wife dunked hers in a cup of coffee this morning - well actually, our two year old did, but whatever....

she turned it off and put it in rice - but as it turns out its not actually turning off. it keeps rebooting itself. is that a bad sign?

I have had my iphone 4 for about 2 years now. Unfortunately on Friday it was submerged in water For under 30 secs. I wasn't at home at the time so i dried it with tissues and shook it franticly and a bit of water came out from the charging area. About 3 hours after the accident I blowdried it with my hairdryer, poked it with cotton buds and wrapped it in a flannel. Then I put it in rice and i have just taken it out now. It wouldn't turn on, so I put it on charge it keeps on making that annoying charging noise, plus when i click the side button to loud and silent it vibrates the only problem is the screen in blak. I REALLY DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO, WILL I HAVE TO BUY A NEW PHONE? PLEASE HELP ME!! I LOVE MY PHONE TO BITS AND HAVE BEEN LOST ALL WEEKEND WITHOUT IT!!!

RE:Dropped iphone in water

If your phone is under warranty then you can go at apple service center if not then you can try at other repair center for your phone Issue.

iPhone Water Damage Repair Guide

We, at Florida iDoctor, do things a bit differently in terms of addressing water-damaged smartphones that make their way into our shop. You see, we are located in Palm Harbor, Florida and only a stones-throw away from the beach!

Of course, the first thing we tell our clients is IF your phone hits the water, to get it to us asap. Rice can work okay in a pinch, but the actual success rate using a bowl of rice is quite low if it were scientifically studied. Fresh water is bad for any smartphone. Pool water (with chlorine) is the next worse type of water infiltration. The most caustic of all water is salt water. Water with high levels of NaCl (salt) is very damaging to electronics due to the high level of corrosivity. Our recommendation is if your phone falls in salt water, to actually rinse it off under tap water in order to try and wash away some of the salt residual. We also ask them to remove the battery (if possible). One word of extreme caution...DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT try and power on your phone to see if it still works no matter how tempting that may seem. You are certainly likely to short out motherboard components if current is applied through the circuits of a water-logged phone.

With that being said, once a client brings us their water-logged phone, the first thing we do is remove the battery. We then tear the phone down to the basic components (battery, frame, motherboard, cameras, etc). Once it is taken apart, we place the motherboard in an professional-grade ultrasonic cleaner using a proprietary dielectric cleaning fluid. This is one of the keys along with making sure the fluid is heated up. Once the board has come out of the ultrasonic cleaner, we rinse it off thoroughly with a deionized (DI) water. DI water is ultra pure and this rinse step will ensure that there are no trace contaminants on the board.

We then take the clean motherboard and put it into a container of desiccant along with all of the other components of the phone. We use a proprietary desiccant with the highest adsorption rate of any desiccant available on the market. This is super-critical so that you can wick away any moisture from the motherboard and the components as quickly AND EFFECTIVELY as
possible.

We let everything sit in the desiccant for 24 hours to ensure complete moisture removal. Once complete, we reinstall all of the components and also install a NEW BATTERY (NOTE: We recommend never reinstalling the same battery once it has come into contact with water).

I hope this helps the readers of this great guide. If anyone needs further help with this process, simply let us know. Since our store is located near the Gulf of Mexico in Palm Harbor, FL we see water damaged iPhones in our shop every day. This process we listed here has achieved over a 74% success rate in restoring water damaged iPhones.

Your warranty does not cover water damage that is unless you have AppleCare + , bad information

My iPhone 4 fell out of my pocket and into a tub full of water. I didn't have any problems at first but now my volume slider has dissapeared and now my phone simply won't charge with anything is there anything I can do to fix this without going to the apple store and paying for them to fix it? I have important stuff on this phone which would not be backed up and do not have enough money to get a new phone or have it repaired. Please help me if you can!

Hope you have insurance. Make sure they cover water damage for a submerged phone, if not, you need to "lose" the phone

Also there is no water damage to it I dried it off and out, took it to the Apple store had them run some tests and they said it was fine. A few days later there was a short in the charging point. Is there a way for me to fix this at home because all of my pictures and contacts would be lost.

How about you back it up so if something does happen at least all won't be lost? Also, download Dropbox, create an account, and upload all of your pictures.

Agreed. The best you can do at this point is damage control & prepare for the future FAIL. Even if all you can do is copy your pix to your computer, you're still saving your valuable data in case the worst happens.

There is just one problem...It will not charge... At all. There is a part of the charging point that is not working I need to be able to fix that before I can back it up

I have there is no debris and for about the forth time there is a part of the charging point that is not working. How do I fix this?

Sometimes the only thing to do is to pay someone (Apple or an independent repair source) to deal with the damage, if repair is even possible.

Sometimes your ticket is just punched. Game over.

Again I DO NOT HAVE THE MONEY!!

I heard you the first time. It seems that the answers offered in this thread don't suit you and you expect someone to offer a Miracle Cure instead. Perhaps you should prepare yourself for the fact that there isn't one.

Either you diagnose the problematic (physical) part and pay for a replacement and do the repair work yourself OR you pay someone to do all of that in a professional manner for you (if it's even possible to repair the damage.) No matter what, some $$$ is exchanged.

There IS water damage, even if the tests say it's fine. The reason is because even if water dries completely away, the corrosive elements in the water will eat away at the components until, like in your case, it stops working.

Go on Ebay. If you have even like $10 you can buy a cheap basic flip phone and use that. Heck, I think I've got one or two lying around even, somewhere in the attic. Might be willing to sell it to you.

Or, you might be able to sell your broken iPhone on eBay and use the proceeds to buy an old 1st generation Droid or maybe an iPhone 3G.

Use iCloud to store a backup of your phone. Save up your money, get a new phone and then restore it.

For the fifth time I have no money! I have $25.72 because I do not have a job. The reason for that is because I can't get a job.

Don't know what to tell you then. If you can't connect to iTunes and you can't charge it, and you can't get someone to lend you some money, then you're done.

Unless:

If you are jailbroken, download funbox to your computer, plug in your phone, and see if it will read it, and pull the files out.

Other than that, there is no hope for your device unless you sell off some stuff in order to get money to pay someone to fix it.

If you used the notes app, goto icloud.com and you can access them. Photos could be in photo stream which can be accessed by downloading the icloud control panel for windows. Or viewable in iPhoto if you have a Mac.

I acknowledge that you have no money right now. Which is why I said when you do have money and able to replace your phone, your backup will be waiting for you.

I have good news guys. I'm truly amazed by the Iphone reliability. I dropped my phone a few times and no damage whatsoever. I do have it in a case.

I forgot to take my phone out of my shorts two weeks ago. I put it in the washer. I was frantically looking for my phone around the house, and using another phone to call it until I realized it was in the washer! It went through half a cycle.

My sister in-law gave me this phone 4 months ago. I was so mad at myself. I immediately looked on google and found out about the rice method. It was around 9pm so of course I couldn't go anywhere to buy the screwdriver to open up the phone.

What made it worse was that I tried to plug it to my computer. The charge noise was working. I left it in there for the night. The next morning Siri came back on but the screen was black! I decided to go out to Frys to buy the screwdriver set. I open up the phone and patted the last few drops of water. A few hours later I could receieve phone calls. The screen was still black. I thought that was the end of it.

I left it in rice for 3 more days hoping it will dry out the connections. The screen was still black. I gave up and took it to a local place that fixed iphone screens. They told me they couldn't do anything about it and that the logic board is screw up. The best thing is just to get a new phone. I decided to open it up one last time to see if I could fix it. It turns out that the screen connection wire was still wet. I dried that and plug it back in. It started working again!
