swear mine has a slight slight gap there where yours does, just use it, you could sell, buy a new one, then drop the new one....

use and abuse my friend.

:)

o.0 could you elaborate on that please?

i think the lid went crooked from the drop. luckily there isn't any dents or visible damage. just the crookedness that can be felt when looking for it. i was thinking that it would be a easy fix by just pounding it downwards (to even it) but i didn't want to risk a dent.

I'm wondering if you take it to a Genius Bar if they would be able to disassemble the top case and put it back together to minimize or perhaps fix the gap entirely. I wouldn't recommend trying to tap it back in place yourself.

Honestly, it's a computer, a tool, an implement that performs a task...it's not there to coo over and spill a tear for the slightest mark or scratch.

If it still works as it should then it's just a little battle wound and part of it's history...like the scar on my knee that I still have from falling off my skateboard at the age of 7.

Bones heel and chicks dig scars.

Based on the title I came in here thinking that you'd have to buy a new one. I looked at both pictures for a couple seconds and didn't notice anything wrong.

Apple products aren't cheap. It's your job to protect your investment and ensure you don't place them in harm's way. That's like "accidentally dropping" and infant on his head. There's just something things you don't do, you know? Unless you're made out of money and have plenty of it to burn, you really need to be alert and conscious of protecting your MacBook Air/iPad/iPhone, etc. It seems like there's a horror story posted on this website every single day and I cannot wrap my head around how people can be so negligent.

No consolation will be awarded at this time, sorry.

You must be a blast at parties. All I hear from you, in both threads you posted your rant, is "LOL look at these stupid people, I am so much better because I walk on water and never break ANYTHING! Aren't I so great?"

I wish we had tags for users so I could monitor your posts for when you post about your sure-to-happen accident.

Seriously? Accidents DO happen, no matter how careful people are.

You know what, I am a blast at parties! Ask any of my friends and they'll tell you how awesome I am.

And, yeah, I just posted on this thread a similar reply to the previous one. Yesterday, when I read this thread, I just shook my head and closed it. I abstained from commenting -- just like I have the million other times I've read this very same thread by a million other posters. However, reading today's negligence story irked me to the point where I decided to comment on it and even come back and comment on this one.

I challenge you to go through all my posts and find one single time where I've ever criticized anyone for breaking/dropping their device. I'm fed up with these BS stories, so I finally opened my mouth. Sue me! I have a right to my opinion as much as you do and there is NOTHING you can do about it, okay?

LOL tell us how you really feel. I agree people ought to take care of their stuff more. It seems like everyday there is somebody on here whimpering about their clumsyness.

I had mine in a backpack, pulled the (as I came to discover) unzipped backpack out of the trunk of my car and swung it around my back, as my MBA swung right out of it and was flung down on the concrete. I got lucky and the only damage was knick in the corner of the unibody where it slammed into the concrete.

Well said that man!

Hi. I usually laugh at these "help me get over my drop" threads but now that i dropped mine, there not so funny any more. ironic :p

anyways, i dropped my 2011 macbook air on the carpet yesterday :(

theres no dents but it slightly made the top lid crooked.

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/33/photo2qhx.jpg/
this the normal side. the black hinge is perfectly flush with aluminum

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/641/photo1kdx.jpg/
this is the side i think got damaged. as you can see, theres a space between the hinge and the aluminum. not only is there a space and uneven, the black part juts out a tad bit so when you run your finger from the aluminum to the hinge, you can feel it poke out.

also, on the right side of the magnetic latch part, the lid area is crooked meaning the bottom half slightly comes out more than the top part. aka its not fully flush. the left side is flush but the right is kind of crooked when you feel it. no visible damage but knowing its there bothers me. :/

i know theres nothing i can do but to accept it but im just venting out my frustration.

thanks guy.

Remember, its just a computer. Don't fret over minor accidents. Imagine how you'd react if you had the same issue with whatever computer you had before switching over to Apple. I bet you wouldn't care as much, right? Besides, its just a thing. I know its new and shiny and you don't want anything to happen to it, but just be glad you didn't crack your screen. As long as it still works, use it, and upgrade when you're ready for the next new thing. :)

Maybe calibre26 sounded a bit like he was mocking peoples clumsiness in an insensitive manner, but to a degree I concur with him. I am always super aware of where my mba is, if i leave the room i place it in an old amazon delivery envelope so my jackdaw can't peck it. I never place it on the same surface as drinks or food. I always double check the velcro strap and zips on my notebook bag, and before it goes in the bag it is placed in the amazon envelope and then placed in an old MBP sleeve. I wipe my bedside table, footstool, desk, or table with a disposable lemon scented towelette before placing my MBA down. If I go to the pub I will commandeer 2 tables, one for my MBA and one for my drink and/or food and then when I walk to the bar my MBA accompanies me (in a pocket of my own devising which is found inside my coat). In short I treat it as one would treat a revered religious object, like jesus' foreskin or St Peters key ring.

lol this made me laugh :D. OCD? but seriously, good on you for looking after it.

i just try and be careful. although mine has fallen off a chair before. i placed it in my backpack and placed it on the chair at college. i turn around and hear a thud, it had fallen off and landed hard on a corner of the mba :(

sure it works fine but i think it loosened the screws a little. but meh :)

Ah well that wouldn't happen to me. When I am away from home my MBA never leaves my field of vision.

I forgot to mention my pub or cafe habits in my earlier post, i think my pocket will be especially interesting to mac protectionists. so i added it to my post.

yeah right. and a child is just a lump of biomass.

Jesus' foreskin? Lump of biomass?

LoL! Your posts have made me laugh hard and I cannot thank you enough. I needed that!

Happy New Years, everyone!

(OP: sorry if sounded insensitive... I would be devastated too, if it happened to me. Glad the damage was minimal.)

How does one drop a laptop exactly?

Sorry I just don't understand this basic concept. Mine gets put into a case each time it comes off a useable surface and stays in case until it comes back out next time.

Your machine sounds like it is ok so just think about changing your habits around a little maybe?

Can you really not see it?

The 11" is made for mobility. People carry them around the house or at the office and often dont shove them into a case as they do so. Easy to see someone walking to the kitchen and tripping on a kids toy.

I'm not sure if you're aware of this thing called Gravity. objects of sufficient mass will attract other objects unless another apposing force resists that force.

I guess in this case, some form of resistant force to gravity failed to operate.

This answer is beter than mine. :D

nvm. not worth replying too.

thanks for the answers guys!

well, you did say you used to laugh at other people's thread when it happened to them...

i haven't dropped any kind of laptop yet, incredible considering how clumsy my hands tend to act sometimes, when i was working on my car i dropped wrenches left and right almost whenever my hands touched anything, like if bumping into some part of the engine meant let go or it'll explode or something XD, thankfully they clutch onto laptops :)

Oh, lordy - there are some interesting folks on this thread.

a) It's a computer. Use it. If it is, relative to your particular circumstances, as expensive as (to paraphrase) the by-product of a bris milôh performed on the person whose birthday many people just celebrated - then take very very good care of it. My personal preference is that I spent some $$, I'm gonna use the thing. Every week or so I have to wipe the milk stains (from reading the news while eating my breakfast cereal) off the keyboard. I have a couple of good dents, and nick, and the hinge is loose. You should see my hammer - which by the way is also a tool.
b) Wiping off the surface an Air is gonna rest on with a lemon scented wipe? I don't know - I'd've thought a winter green scented wipe would work better. Lemon scent is energizing, and winter green will exude a more relaxing environment.
c) A case to put a laptop in? My briefcase is a case - I need another one?
d) Accidents happen. Anyone who gives the victim a hard time for having one is i) blaming the victim, and ii) just lucky (so far), because iii) karma hates a smirky know it all. My wife's Air was pulled off the table by the cat. St*ff happens.

Take it to Apple and let a genius look at it.

I wouldn't go to the Apple store - right idea - wrong place. If it involves any serious work, I suspect the genius needs to account for their time... and hence charge you. And then they need to work to Apple's specs for a repair. Better to go to an Apple Authorized repair shop, where they have more freedom to just bend things back into the place.

I use mine in bed at night and sometimes miss the bedside drawers when I lean over to put it on top, and it drops onto the carpet.

However it is in a clear plastic snap on case that is cracked top and bottom, but it has made a great job of protecting my MBA. Biggest drawback is it adds a little weight, other than that it is a no brainer for a tenner. It is a year old now but identical to new.

sometimes when the door in my bedroom won't stay a-jar i like to use my mba as a door stop, normally does the trick, perfect thickness..
