get a square trade warranty. if you think it will get dropped again.... but also call up apple and ask how much it would cost to replace the outer case if u pay cash... if it comes out to be less then 150 which i do not think it will. then go to square trade and get the accidental care warranty for $99. wait a week and then call em up and say you dropped it and then they will fix it for the $50 dollar deductible. and there you go ipad fixed. then sell it :p before the end of january to get the best price before the second one comes out :D..

not necessarily the most ethic way to get it fixed but yea. it works.

This is what is meant by fraud...

I think by fraud they meant his girlfriend taking it to the Apple store to get it fixed for free...

Just use it till iPad2 comes out. I think it will be sooner than most people think and I also feel (hope) that in the US we will have more options than AT&T for the data plans.

It wouldn't hurt too at least try and get a replacement. Maybe take it to your local "genius" and see if you can catch them on a good day. Be super friendly, and if you're girlfriend is good-looking...bring her along:D

But don't let her carry the iPad or touch the in-store display items ;)

Other posters have offered ideas like:

-Sell on craigslist, supplement with cash and get a new one
-Warranty
-Go to apple and try to get it fixed/replaced

Don't have anything constructive to say? Don't post.

Thanks for the opinions everyone else. I think I'm just going to sell it on CL and get the 64gb 3g model like I should have in the first place.

Wait, so your telling me that you needed help coming up with the above options? Yea I doubt it . lets be real here, you were wondering if apple would somehow take care of it. Plain and simple. To suggest that you need help coming up with "selling and getting a new one", is insulting to peoples intelligence.

Better off to just move on. I did the same thing five months ago, a few days after getting the iPad. Had a few beers, fell asleep holding iPad, woke up it was face down on ground with no case at the time. Thankfully, only damage was to one corner of the casing. It bothered me for about two days, that's all. You'll get over it

Actually I think most of these insurance companies work so that if you buy the insurance the same day as the iPad, it is immediately effective. If you buy the insurance after the iPad, then there is a 30 day waiting period before you can make any claims. I'm positive it is for exactly this reason.

Since they seem to be pretty well set up to expect exactly these sort of claims to happen, I wouldn't go so far as calling it fraud (although read the fine print to be certain, of course, and if they ask you when it happened, then yeah, you might get into some trouble there).

But personally, I would take out a policy just in case it happens again (doubt it'll take 2 falls gracefully), and live with it, especially if it works fine and you can't tell in the case. But that's just me, I can understand being annoyed by a seriously blemished iPad.

Oh, and I'd also milk it for all that it's worth with the girlfriend. That may be worth more than a spotless iPad. ;)

If you do this, you're committing fraud. Insurance fraud to be exact. Squaretrade is an inland marine physical damage insurance policy with mechanical breakdown included. If you have a prior damaged unit that you file a policy with then immediately file a claim and they find out about it, you'll be charged with a felony in your state. Also the same if you 'leave it on the counter and it happens to drop again'.

In most states, it's a 2-10 year sentence.

MR could be subpoenaed and your ip tracked, and you could be held liable too if it's discovered you encouraged him to commit fraud.

In other words, don't be dumb and come on here encouraging people to commit crimes.

That would be covered by my home insurance here in the UK, covered for damge or theft of anything on my person up to £2000

Rumors have it that the 2nd gen iPad will be released early part of next year. Some people are starting to think about selling their before the new one arrives. It may not be a wise idea to buy now, especially when you do have a working one to keep you entertained until then.

Similar problem here. I dropped my iPad 3G which was in a case. Afterward I discovered the black plastic piece at the top had a cracked edge.
Best option is to sell it (the market is best now before Xmas) and take what ever beating you have to on the damage then wait for the version 2 to come out in a few months. Get yourself a new one then. Problem solved.
Other option is check your screen for any defects and try to get it replaced under warranty for the screen problem if you have one. They will likely send you a new one so that will fix the other problem.

... I highly doubt MR will be subpoenaed for something that is not fraud when it is a second time.. which is what I ment... i don't get how you think getting a plan knowing your girlfriend will most likely drop it again is fraud.. Would that not fall into the place abotu the whole reason to get it. I think you misunderstanding the concept here. anyways this is going no where accept a bunch of whistle blowing...

iPad rear covers are about $50 a piece. Never repaired an ipad, so im not sure how easy it is, but you'll usually need to transfer the volume and power flex cables . If it's like the ipod touch, then all you need to do is take the board out, take the flex out, and put them in the new case and snap the screen back into place.

To the last three posts, please not those are prices for just the part, no labor. Might want to take a look at the videos on the web to see the work involved in opening up this beast and taking EVERYTHING out to replace the back which houses all the parts. might be a bit daunting to the average ham-fisted folks....just sayin'. While $149 may sound like a lot, it would cost a lot more to mess up the little/expensive bits inside or break/damage the glass.

Heres one video:http://www.powerbookmedic.com/wordpress/2010/05/21/ipad-3g-repair-take-apart-video

How much would it be worth?

I also dropped my iPad. The Apple case did its job in protecting it, and so the iPad is fine functionally. But a small scratch was resulted at the corner, and I am considering selling it now, and wait for iPad 2 to be released.

How much do you think it would be worth on Craiglist or Kijiji? It is a 64GB with 3G. The iPad is otherwise like-brand new condition. I also have all the packaging, and remaining 5-6 months of Applecare.

(Before anyone asked, I am not trying to sell it on this forum. I want to sell it locally in person, but I just wanted to see what you guys think in terms of price)

Getting a plan knowing your girl is a klutz isn't, but getting a plan and devising a way to get it to fall is.

What is confusing to me is all the people that want to sell their iPads because they have a scratch on the back case.

I think you'd be insane to sell for that scratch... its miniscule!

it would get almost full price, but not quite maybe 30-40 off
