Unfortunately just dropped by 1 week old rMPB onto a tile floor. It was in a sleeve though. There is a scuff on the lid in the bottom corner (can I polish this out or something?) but I was just wondering how I can check for any internal damage?

Pics? iFixit won't be much help given the very limited repairability of the machine.

Added photo, quite superficial but this is my first MBP and sucks to see I have already scratched it so early.

I think, if the display is intact and the fans aren't screeching, you're probably good to go. I suppose testing the I/O ports would make some sense. It's conceivable something got unplugged. Test WiFi too, that board is on a connector and has three antenna cables plugged into it.

Will this anecdote cheer you up... or depress you further?

I had had my second iPad 2 for two days. The first one had been stolen out of my briefcase in a conference room earlier in the week. I was at my niece's house and was sitting on the couch reading the Journal on my iPad. The new iPad was in an "extra" case that I'd replaced on the stolen iPad. The case fit too loosely for my taste.

So the doorbell rings, the dogs bark and, being the attentive uncle that I am, I spring up to get the door. Somehow the new iPad launched out of the too-loose case and did four slow-motion somersaults as it arced up near the ceiling on it's way to land on it's edge on my niece's new slate foyer floor.

All of which was too much for the display to handle. The good news is that most of the glass pieces actually stayed attached. And a little piece of it was still lit up.
To this day the physics of the event puzzle me.

Off to the Apple store AGAIN the next day to buy my THIRD iPad 2.

All of which is to say that, while it sucks that you dented your new Mac, it could have been worse.

It does suck though man.

This week, first night I had mine, I knocked it off my bed when I was sleeping. Freaked out but all is well!

On a lighter side something else could fail during the warranty period, not related to the fall and they might just swap out the whole thing.

Best wishes going forward.

Haha not sure what I would think if something else failed! A blessing or a curse?! I'm just telling myself the dent adds personality to my Mac...

Checked everything and all seems well, just the cosmetic damage from the fall, and yes, it could have been worse

I'm sorry about the mishap. The bad thing is that scratch is the first thing you will notice every time you come up to your brand new system.

Completely agree with you, I would not be as bothered if the scratch was on the bottom and I wouldn't see it as much!

Thats what happened to me with my 2011 MBP. My friend tossed my backpack out of the car not knowing my MBP was in it. Dented the corner pretty good. A week later my HDD failed and the microphone stopped working. I got a whole new MBP :) They didn't even ask about the dent.

This is a sign... for you to get carpet on your house.
Disagree.

Hard floors are better than carpet, not only because the former is much easier to clean and replace, but because you're forced to be more careful with anything you carry.
