You’ve got to also remember that any background tasks will have a impact on the results as they will interrupt the benchmark processes.

Absolutely - I turn everything off - even Airport/Wireless if applicable.

As @LightBulbFun indicated, 2.2.7 does seem best for Leopard (apart from on my MDD!) - in future I'll stick to 2.1.2 for Tiger systems as I've been using that for years.

I sometimes use my makeshift benchmark test for a more real world assessment but even that gets thrown off by using different versions of Quicktime, in fact for that test, my new MDD beats my Dual 2.3 G5, presumable because the G4 has Quicktime 7.5.5 instead of the G5's 7.6.4

Nice find!

Also, I'm always amazed how people don't even do a quick wipe of their hard drive before selling things off.

I bought an eMac to install OS9 that came with panther pre-installed, and the seller was so nice as to include tons of documents plus all of their Gmail, banking, and other passwords--at least a couple of which were still working when my curiosity got the better of me. The same thing happened with an old black Macbook I bought last summer.

Of course I wiped both machines right away, but not everyone has good intentions. Really ridiculous.
I highly, highly, highly recommend that you never be this curious again. I can only assume you were able to verify the passwords by using them which is illegal.

@LightBulbFun Pics of the 7448

I had to use a magnifying glass to get the writings properly readable because my camera sucks.
I also took them next to a MDD dual 1.42 board to compare the size between 7448 and 7455. 7448.jpg 7448vs7455.jpg

I was kinda lucky as someone on ebay sold the three of them for $40 USD. I found the listing randomly.

@AphoticD this is quite the opposite for me. On geekbench 2.1.9 my MDD scores approx. 1400 while it goes down to approx. 1300 on 2.2.7. I also noted 2.2.7 benchmarks take longer than 2.1.9's.

the Sonnet dual 1.8 is a pair of 1.42ghz 7447As overclocked to 1.8ghz. If you had one of the extremely rare dual 1.8 7448s, you might see the gap narrow quite a bit. I know that my 2.0ghz 7448 is a beast at single threaded tasks.

I have a MDD with a Sonnet dual 1.8ghz upgrade, and I boot it up every here & then. How do I check to see if it's a 7447 or a "rare" 7448? If it is a 7448, is there any practical way to take advantage of that?

I'd love to get a MDD one day myself. How does the fan noise compare to a healthy G5?

There's no doubt it's noisier than a healthy G5 but so far, the fans have remained at a constant pitch regardless of load. My Dual 2.3 which has some kind of sensor problem has to be run in reduced mode, else the fans blast away at the least provocation (not just heavy CPU load).
By contrast, my old Quad was whisper quiet regardless of the task it was running.

the the sonnet Dual 1.8Ghz always used 7447A/Bs as far as im aware

its still a very nice and rare CPU :)

The easiest way to ID a 7448 is by the cach size. 7448s have 1mb L2 cache.

BTW, a while back we had some doctored photos along with a big story about 17" DLSD PowerBooks having 7448s. I did a tear-down of my 17", and posted die photos of that along with photos of a real 7448. The 7448 die is a decent amount smaller than the 7447.

Yes, the "Elusive 7448 equipped PB G4 17-inch DLSD". The holy grail of PowerPC portables which was nothing more than a hoax :apple:

Does anyone here have a faster-than-stock last rev PowerBook G4? Was there really a 2Ghz upgrade? I can only imagine how hot it ran!

daystar DID offer a 7448 upgrade service for the DLSDs but it was very short lived.

the big thing about 7448s and DLSDs is all the Numpties like rabidz 7 who run around proclaiming that DLSDs had 7448s from the factory which is not true.

(its a shame you where not part of this forum a few years ago Rabidz was a proper nut case :) )

Do you no longer have it?

He's actually still here. He just doesn't post.

When the forum changed, his account became un-suspended.

A MDD is much noisier than a G5... However the G5 will warm up the room when under load.. A MDD never does even with heavily overclocked processors (something like MP 7455 @1.67ghz).

With a couple simple case mods the MDD is easy to both quiet down and (even) cool down alot more efficiently.
Picture 1.jpg
The usual temperature from my machine cpu board's censor when not under sustained heavy load(typical desktop use, note I rarely use 10+ applications at the same time). Worst case it will reach 38ªc under sustained load (42ªc when using an utility to stress-test), regardless of uptime.

This MDD right now has 1 extra fan in comparison to stock (it's a PCI slot cooler). I think Apple really did a poopy job in making these machines cool/quiet as it has much more potential than quicksilvers and earlier. Ah, I have a copper heatsink, also. Anyways, I like this machine more than my G5.
