- I wonder if the case of people getting the dreaded "slipped ship date" message and then suddenly finding the G5 has shipped is because of the cancellations we are now seeing.
- Has anyone had their order status report Open and receive a computer?
- Is there someone from Apple's shipping department that could anonymously tell us the thought process behind what is shipping and not? Is the head of the warehouse the famous "Soup Nazi"?
This is definitely the most funny story I have read here (apart from the nude (or with towel, but naked beneethmidwestshooter said:I placed an order (called the Apple Store) on 8-5-04. Shipping was scheduled for 9-17-04.
As a backup, I called all the Apple Stores within 300 miles of me on 8-18-04 (Wed), including Chicago and Minneapolis --I'm in Iowa and our Des Moines store has not opened yet.
Yesterday, Thursday, 8-19-04 I received a call late in the afternoon from the Apple Store in Minneapolis (Mall of America). They had a few dual 2.5 G5s come in and my name was on one. Only problem was that they could only hold it to closing time (9:30 PM) -- and they were 300 miles away.
So, I fired up the Porsche (there IS no substitute), and off I went.
I made it well before closing, purchased a dual 2.5 G5 and the new 23 inch monitor. Sweet! It is stock (160GB HD, 512 RAM, no airport, and with Apple Care). I had to take the boxes apart to get them into the Porsche and see out the window.
I checked into a nearby hotel and carried the stuff up to my room (3 people suggested that a laptop would be more convenient).
I set up the computer and 23 inch monitor and ran the Apple Hardware Test (AHT). Everything passed with flying colors. The 23 inch monitor is awesome!
Now I'm home in the studio where Crucial's Fed Ex box was waiting for me with six 512MB RAM sticks. I had ordered the RAM online as soon as I got the call from the Apple Store. I already purchased a second drive - Raptor 74GB 10,000 RPM. Installing the 6 RAM sticks and the second drive took about 15 minutes. I formatted the second drive and the computer now shows 3.5 GB of RAM.
The AHT has just finished running after installing the RAM and second drive. It took 1 hour and 45 minutes (biting my nails toward the end!)
I cancelled the original Apple Store order. You can only do that by phone and I was on hold for 27 minutes!
I do large format photography with a 16 megapixel back on a Hasselblad. My images are often 700 MB each, and working with them in Photoshop CS on my dual 1.4 GHz G4 has become a huge drain on my time. I'll make some comaprisons between the dual G4 and my new Dual 2.5 G5 using PS CS with large files -- and I'll post them in the forum when I get the results.
So, the word is: Call your nearest Apple Retail Store and get on the list. It worked for me.

fongyboy said:Thanks APPLE for delaying my order once again! I am VERY pissed now that I've just recieved another email pushing my order back until August 30th. I am a switcher... hmm... not anymore. I'm thinking of cancelling my order now. You see, the powermacs are rather lagging behind technology now. I was expecting pci-express, ddr2, built-in memory controller in the processor, blueray dvd or something of the likes. But.. there just merely add a faster processor into a last-year's design. On top of that, they only have 2 hdd bays. My current desktop has 780gb of hdd space. My purchase of the G5 (with 2x 250gb) is rather degrading myself. However, I thought despite all these cons, it was worth buying the PowerMac 2 months ago because I have no plans for my summer vacation and so it would be a good time for me to switch and learn the mac osx interface. Well.. my summer vacation is over now and my PM? No where to be found. It really bugs me that people can walk into a store and buy one... while I ordered one 2 months ago and I'm still waiting for it to be shipped.![]()

Apple Stores have been restocking before our pre-orders are even being shipped. Some people think that Apple is just treating their stores as "customers" as well. I think otherwise. Apple is just treating us like ****. Because all those who have pre-ordered already, Apple thinks they can take advantage of us.
In simple terms, those who have already ordered... we can wait because we already committed ourselfs to their product. Apple wants to sell more computers (hence more revenue).. so they send more computers to Apple store where their salesman can push those computers out the door. And those who cancel their order to buy from the store, Apple is still earning your money so they don't care. Well this is only my OPINION and it makes perfect sense to me.
Anyways.. I still want to ask for people's advice on whether it is a good idea to cancel my order now. Should I wait for the next revision... maybe when they switch to PCI-Express and duel core? School is starting for me and I'm in Engineering Physics so I wouldn't have much time to spend on the computer anyways so I'm hesitant. Maybe I should just get an AMD A64. What should I do? What should I do? Should I call apple up and ask for some compensation before I cancel? If i recieve some compensation I would stay on my order. Plz. help.. Plz. help!!

My DP 2.0 G5 was originally ordered 06/03/04. Slated for shipping on 06/14, I believe. Anywho, the very day it was to ship, I get this e-msail from Mother Apple asking if'n I'd care to upgrade to dual 2.5, liquid cooled w/8X Super Drive, all at no extra cost IF I'd wait another 30 days er no later than 07/30. Now everybody knows the chorus to this song. Now we're going to wait till 08/30/04 for the next installment. They know good an' darned well, we're not gonna tell 'em to stuff it, right?? I ordered the Power Mac 'cause I wanted the best! I still do, but..... when's it gonna get here Dood??
Robin Hood said:I also just got an e-mail from Apple saying that my G5 with the Nvidia 6800 card has been delayed from 08/31 to 09/13. Since I'm also getting a 30" display I saw no reason to get it with the 9600. Is anyone getting a G5 with the Nvidia card before mid-September?
