Duff-Man says....well, I feel sorry for all those getting hit with another delay...but it is only 10 days and it sounds like it won't even be that long - are some that received the email not phoning nd being told early next week? so hang in there - you've waited this long, don't let it get to you. As for me, well I just checked the tracking number my reseller sent me yesterday again and mine has made it to the west coast - now just a short hop over to this island....should be here Monday.....oh yeah!

Duff-Man says...the 9600xt is not exactly really "crappy." Consider it a gift from apple, and one that you can sell to someone else using an older card - ever heard of eBay? ;) ....oh yeah!

They know good an' darned well, we're not gonna tell 'em to stuff it, right?? I ordered the Power Mac 'cause I wanted the best! I still do, but..... when's it gonna get here Dood??

Hey, that gives me a great idea for a movie, we'll call it "Dude, Where's My PowerMac G5?". We'll get Solo to narrate. Ashton Kutcher could star. We could edit it on our on PowerMac G5's in Final Cut Pro. It would be a great comedy.

Ok check this out... you all know that my order status changed today to 8/30. Also, due to a letter I wrote days ago I was informed that my order was now being handled by Executive Relations (was supposed to get a call today, never did), so no more Sara. Then I went down to Tekserve in NYC, they had dual 2.5's in stock. So I figured I would check with Apple Soho, low and behold they have them too, all the while I dont. Then I call Sara again, to yell and scream, she then informs me that my order has shipped, complete with tracking number. So who knows. But I have to wait until Monday now, cuz Fedex and Apple do not deliver on Saturdays. So all I can say is that APPLE IS SO SCREWED UP!

Apple is so screwd up. I ordered 6/09 and I just got delayed to 8/30. WTF! I mean come on. I know its only 10 days, whats ten days after 90, right? They (apple) have broken me, I give up. I guess hope (and ordering early) doesn't go far.

Retail Redux

OK, I was "stopping by" the Apple Store in Salem, NH and, low and behold, two 2.5s were coming off the truck. I snatched one up (and saved the Mass. Sales tax that the Apple Online store would have charged me on my 9/20 order). The only thing I missed was Bluetooth, which I'm not really sure I need. Was only going to get the 9600 anyway (not a gamer, at this point).

Of course, I'm on vacation so I can't even hook her up for another week.. :)

I'm with you...

Ordered 6/09, and I just don't give a f*** anymore... :(

I honestly could almost care less if it comes or not, I'm just used to these delays, and used to seeing my order status as "open." I'm beginning to think it will continue to be delayed until next year. :(

I suppose on the upside I received $100 off my order, but, I'd rather just have a computer.

I'm calling tomorrow to see if I can get another $100 off... :(

Screw Apple..... screw computers in general... :(

Got one at Short Hills, NJ Apple Store

On a whim, I called my local Apple Store in Short Hills, NJ and asked if they had gotten any in. The girl said yes! I asked if they had just one or two or did they have ample stock and she said they had a bunch. I thought about it for a good five minutes, called them back and asked them to put my name on one. I figured it looked like MacMall was going to take a while to get down to the 200 level in their queue where my order is so I went for it. If I was early up in the queue, I wouldn't have cancelled my MacMall order, but I just had a bad feeling it would drag on and my sanity would suffer as a result. Coincidentally, when I got home, there was a letter from them saying that my G5 should ship within 30 days. Glad I made I right the decision.

Now here comes the fun part. I get the G5 home and open it up to find that it apparently had been hit by a truck on the assembly line. The bottom front "handle" was severely bent and the side panel didn't sit flush. I nearly cried. I packed it back up, raced back to the store and was fortunate enough to get another one. I presented the damage to the people at the store and they agreed that I was to get a replacement. As we were making the exchange, the guy at the store actually said that there would be a 10% re-stocking fee! I said "You're joking, right"? He stumbled and said no to which I replied "That isn't going to happen, this computer is DOA" and then someone else there took care of it and said that it was a mistake and I would not be charged. I also asked him how many they had and he said four or five so if you're near NJ, go grab one.

The new machine is nice and clean and has passed the hardware test.

I attached a few photos. Since I didn't have a FedEx person to take a photo of, my girlfriend took one of me unloading it out of the back of my truck. Little did I know then that heartache would be waiting for me inside that black box! I also included photos of the damage. The last photo is of the replacement I received.

Yikes, that's horrible! Good to hear you were able to get a replacement so quickly, and good for you for not paying the restocking fee! Man, seeing that damaged PowerMac is gut-wrenching - it's like someone taking a spray paint can to a Monet! Something that "artistic" and aesthetically perfect should never have to endure such torture! ;)

The strange thing is, the box was basically unscathed. There were some minor dings in the cardboard, but nothing that could've caused the damage to the computer. It must have happend on the assembly line, but how something that glaring could've made it's way into the box unnoticed is beyond me. Perhaps they were in a rush to get it out the door?

MOSR WAS RIGHT!!!!!

Desperate, and willing to turn to any source, I emailed MOSR last night and asked if the dual 2.5s would be going out today, "8/20." I was surprised that they replied, and were right on the mark. This was posted late last night...

"MelkorOSX" (that's me) writes: Tomorrow is 8/20, the day which is slated by Apple to be the day in which a slew of 2.5GHz backorders will be fulfilled.

Will Apple make the date.....or will it be pushed back once again?

Do you know anything else about the Dual 2.5 fiasco?

Their Response:

Ongoing problems at IBM with reliable yields of the new 90-nanometer PowerPC 970FX processor, plus unexpectedly high numbers of systems which are DOA at the retailer (usually due to one or both of the CPUs failing), mean that Apple will probably not be able to stick to that ship date for the majority of those who were quoted it.

Apple billing seems confused as well as shipping

My machine shipped yesterday and is on the way to my place.

I have been watching my credit card to see when the actual charges are going to put on it. It is almost funny. At this point, the charge has not been posted. On my credit card web page, there is a section for pending charges.

On Monday Apple probed my card for the charges for the PM 2.5G.
Yesterday Apple probed my card for charges for the PM 2.5G
Just in the last hour or so, Apple probed my card for the PM 2.5G.

The pending charges from Apple now amount to 3x the cost of the computer. They really do not seem to have their act together.

At this point my machine is headed to my house and I have not actually paid for it yet. It must be total bedlam at the apple shipping facilities.

Duff-Man says....not too surprising...they seem to be shipping them from different locations, and the billing is probably done in one place (for USA anyway), they may have to wait until the shipping confirmations arrive before they process the final payment. I frequently do not see charges appear in my online credit card statements for a few days - sometimes takes a day or two to get from one bank to the other depending on what time of day stuff goes through - my G5 was shipped from my reseller yesterday and it does not appear on my card yet when I look online.....oh yeah!

Duff-Man says...hang in there, just a bit longer....you'll love the computer when it arrives - you've waited this long. It's not all Apple's fault (except the communication part, but I sometimes wonder if they don't get word of things late as well, what with stuff shipping from all over the place...it's like getting the planets all aligned...heheh). I know it's hard - I have been waiting too - but keep the hope up...and hell, if you can scoop an additional discount then go for it - buy some extra ram or something....oh yeah!

Yeah, maybe...

When I called today part of my conversation with a supervisor went something like this:

- Do you know why it is being delayed?
/ Yes.
- Why?
/ Parts.
- Which parts?
/ Multiple parts.
- Specifically which parts?
/ The video card. (9600XT)
- What other parts.......(no response)..... do you know?
/ Yes.
- Can you tell me?
/ No.

Overall the conversation went really well but that part was just weird. He was a nice guy and it's a pity that Apple isn't preparing the support staff and supervisors with necessary information to be able to be of help. He did give me the $100 off, though.

Why don't I ever get the nice ones! The woman I talked to was rude as hell. On top of that, she didn't tell me ANYTHING! (not a suprise at this point)

I have no way out.

OK, so here's my deal. We have this reseller who we have to go through who Don't Know Jack About Mac. :(
When I place the order with them on June 9th(exactly 1 hour after the announcement) I make it crystal clear that the machine HAS to be ordered directly from the Apple Store to get the configuration I want(Apple ROM ATI 9800XT). Plus I up the HD to 250GB and the RAM to 2GB. I also add the 23" Cinema Display that qualifies for the "Brilliant Savings" promo when ordered on the same invoice. I send them a PDF copy of my configuration directly from the Apple Store so they'll know exactly what to do AND send them a direct link to the Apple Store online. Pretty full-proof, right?

Let me pause here for some further backstory...

About a year and a half ago, I place an order with the same company(again which we have to order from) for a Dual Mac G4 with Radeon 9700 card and extra RAM. Because of the Custom order graphics card, the machine is only available from Apple direct. I state specifically in my email the configuration is only available directly from Apple because of the graphics card. They say no problem. We will order it right away. Days go by... Not worried because I knew that there was a delay in general with the Radeon 9700. Weeks go by... Still not too worried, graphics card and all. Call em just to check it. They say they are still waiting on the machine from Apple. Months go by... My blood pressure has slowly risen as the weeks have gone by. At the two and a half month mark. I call the vendor and ask what is going on.

After two days I hear back... Oooops! Gee, they never ordered the machine. But it's on order now and is set to ship out today. They(My Vendor) say sorry, their vendor thought the Powerbook we also ordered two months ago replaced the Dual G4. I say, "what vendor, you're ordering the machine directly from Apple like I told you you had to, right? " I continue by asking for a fax of the machine specs they are ordering. They send me the specs, which turns out to be a base system with extra ram. I call immediately and let them know what they are ordering is not what I asked for. They manage to stop the shipment from their vendor and promise to order the machine directly from Apple. A week and a day later, the machine finally comes in. After all the blood boiling I am finally relieved and happy the ordeal is finally over with. I set the box down in my office and get ready to open the box, savoring the anticipation, waiting for the smell of the new computer to fill the room. But then I happen to look at the little white sticker on the outside of the box. The one with the machine specs on it. I look where it says what graphics card comes with the machine. It says Nvidea Geforce4. SON OF A B*%CH! I sat there looking at the box for about 5 minutes before I could move. Nvidea Geforce4. A graphics card that was available the day the machines were announced. A graphics card I could have had right away without waiting nearly 3 months. A graphics card that at the time had numerous display issues with Maya and After Effects. A graphics card I didn't want.

So I pick up the phone and call our VAR(which of course means Value Added Reseller) and ask how they could have gotten it wrong again. They say, "Our vendor said this configuration was just as good as what I had asked for, plus it was cheaper." So once again they hadn't ordered from the Apple Store and willfully ignored my accurate expert advice. "Don't worry," they say, "we'll just order the graphics card seperately directly from Apple to make it right. I say, "you can't order the part seperately, you have to buy it with a machine. That's why I asked you to order it directly from Apple in the first place."

"No, no," they say, "we do this kind of thing all the time."

"OK," I say, "so I'm gonna open up this box. When I do it will no longer be new, and you will not be able to sell it to anyone as new. Go it?"

"No problem," they say, "we got it covered. We know what we are doing." :D

So I open the box, reformat and partition the hard drive and spend most of the day loading software on the new machine. I'm about halfway through loading my project files when I get a phonecall. It's the vendor.

"We can't order the part seperately. Apple doesn't sell it unless it comes with a new machine ordered directly from the Apple Store online" he says.

"Yeah," I say, "I know." Long silence.... Then I say, "So when the new machine comes in that you are ordering directly from Apple, what do you want me to do with this one that belongs to you?"

"I don't know," he says, "I guess we'll find something to do with it."

At this point, I'm grinning ear to ear. I'm thinking that this is a good lesson learned for the vendor. As horrible as the experience had been, the outcome would ensure that this would never happen again. Their mistake cost them. Obviously, I knew what I was talking about and they didn't. Next time they would heed my advice.

OK. Back to the current order. Remember how full proof I made it. Can't be screwed up. Can't be....

Or so you would think.....

So weeks ago(middle of July), I know the machines are supposed to start shipping at the end of the month after the initial delay. I call the vendor and ask for a time frame. Wait a few days and don't hear anything. I check again the next Monday. Our rep is now on vacation for a week. I leave a message on his voicemail. I hear back on July 22. The machine is set to ship 8/02. On 8/6, I leave a message and ask what the deal is? The following Monday I get an email from the vendor stating the ship date has changed to 9/2, no explanation. Tuesday I email back and ask to find out a further explanation from Apple. I hear nothing all week. The next Tuesday I call and get the vendor on the phone. The first thing they say is,"If your calling about that G5 again, I'm gonna have to hurt you." A joke, sure, but untimely. I say, "Well, if you would have responded to my email from a week and a half ago I wouldn't be calling you now." The vendor says,"Oh, didn't I call you back about that?" So I say, "How about this....Why don't you get the order number for the computer and the zip and email it to me and then you won't have to hear from me again. I can't look at the status on the Apple site with that information." "No problem," they say.

Well I still don't have the Apple Order number info, nor have I heard a thing from the vendor. A funny thing happened mid-week, though. The vendor dropped off my 23" Cinema Display at our office while I was at lunch. I was stoked. I hooked it up to my G4 right away and I must say that it is beautiful. Much brighter and much more screen real estate than my old monitors. So I have 3 happy days with the new monitor when I get a great idea this afternoon. The moniter was ordered on the same ticket as the computer, so the order number must be the same. Maybe I could look it up. So I grab the box and look at the little white shipping label to get the number. I look at the SHIP TO address. I ain't me. It is to a regional computer distribution company. I don't immediately panic. Maybe THIS company ordered directly from Apple. Then I look at the SHIP FROM address. I sit and stare in horror. It ain't Apple. It is from Ingram Micro. So once again MY VENDOR completely ignored my advice/warning about the computer. And here I am in a reoccurring horror that will never end.

So here I am, sitting here at midnight, not knowing if Ingram Micro somehow has someway of ordering custom configured systems directly from Apple and no way of finding out. Since my vendor didn't order directly from Apple like I asked, they aren't calling me back because they can't give me an Apple order number that they don't have and since Ingram Micro is so many vendors in between them and me, there is no way they can give me any information. I was so flabbergasted that I simply stared at my computer for the last few minutes of the work day. I knew that if I called the vendor right then, that what I would say would not be professional. I wonder if there is a time when it is ok with losing you temper with a vendor. Is this it?

Anyway, someone help me! I am of the opinion now that either my vendor ordered the moniter and computer seperately, which would disqualify the Brilliant Savings offer; or they ordered the computer from Ingram and I will not be getting what I asked for. AGAIN! :(

The order number on the monitor box is not an Ingram Micro order number by the way, it is an order number from the middle man company that my vendor ordered from.

Anyway, good luck to all of you. I apparently have no luck with this kind of thing. :(

Good Night.......

ps - it's late and I'm very tired and frustrated. It wouldn't surprise me if I have typos. Let em slide. Don't kick me when I'm down...

Man, I'm sorry! :( If it's any consolation, your story while depressing, was very well written. It's almost comical that so many of us are getting the shaft from so many different places.

managed to get wireless access in my hotel room, and my date slipped too (as expected). congrats to everyone who found one! i'm gonna wait it out, as i have both the EDU discount and no tax (my machine was actually ordered in the New Hampshire Apple Store and is being sent there). hope they ship next week...

Studio Dweller, what are the odds???

"Oh my Gawd this feels so good to type...

kgforce, I feel your pain, and that e-mail you got confirms how I just "squirreled" out here in my "fly over country" state.

On a whim I called a small reseller store, an hour away. The gal said yes, we have the 2.5. I made her go and get someone else, "Yep, we have it. Got two."

The nice sales gal proceeded to negotiate w/ me to compete w/ and so I could cancel my MacMall order (Gawd, those bastards p*ssed me off in the last couple of days, not to mention a different story every time you call. They will NOT tell you where you are in the Que., or even give you a ballpark. The sales manager gotta pretty smart *ssie w/ me, after I really questioned whether it's good business to be able to tell your customers your 208th on the list or 25th? So this feels extra good).

I had to laugh as she said, "Why am I negotiating w/ you on a computer than everybody is trying to get a hold of? Pretty funny, but i didn't want to agree too hard on that.

Anyway, headed out the door to go pick it up. When in hand the cell phone will be dialing MacMall w/ glee, telling them not to bother, after all.

"Studio Dweller" I strike a blow for us. I wish I wish I could take you w/ me. We've been comparing MacMall notes all along, BTW."

*You see this quoted post above, SD, a couple of pages back? What are the odds on the same day, we punt and go find our own? Yep good decision. Heck, I got this store to give a real nice discount to boot! Sure as hell glad minewasn't hit by a bus like yours (I felt sheepish after reading your account that I didn't even check). This small store was an hour away, one way. Congrats, man. I guess I did "take you w/ me", after all. Get this: The Fed Ex slip shows they've had these two units since the 13th. Who did MacMall piss off that their rep didn't give them squat? You know, over all, my experinece w/ them on this was pretty bad. Hmmmm. What else can explain even the mom and pop resellers are showing units? Apple must really put a priotity on the brick and mortar over the individuals and the internet resellers, eh? Seems damn obvious to me.

T, running hardware test right now.
