Yeah, bit the bullet today: decided this is the upgrade year to sit it out.

VirginMobile (Australia) had a three day deal with huge data for a SIM only 12 month contract, 20% off and bonus data. They've been pretty stringy with data for a while so may be testing the water.

Weighed up upgrading to an 8+ but don't see that much added value to lock me into a two year contract. Can't see X being available in a timely manner (who wants to get a two year contract 30% into the cycle?) and the price is very much "aspirational".

Figure next September Apple might have learned their lesson and ensured sufficient stock upon announcement and FaceID will be tested and working well and filtered down to all/more phones.

If today's reports are accurate and 7's are outselling 8's, then Apple might learn that having too many products causes issues. If they had ditched the 7 then maybe they'd be selling more 8's...

I like your logic here. And this year is going to be a real test for the iPhone X and this new technology. Aside from that, is when do most receive their iPhone X after they order? If you have some who upgrade annually and don't receive their iPhone until later, that would be a short time to own an iPhone for what the overall cost is. But I look forward to 2018 for the iPhone X and it's future.

I believe the market changed where competition and alternatives has gotten better. The hype for any new iPhone has started to wane. The first three years of Android was ugly at best.

From 2007-2012, iPhone conquered all. Had the best in pretty much everything. People were in search for the iPhone killer. Then Android started to hit its stride with KitKat in 2013. HTC One M7 brought out an amazing design that Apple copied from including BoomSound and Zoe. Samsung started to nail better design and camera by 2015.

What was the iPhone 5's competition back then? S3 (Trump phone)? Nexus 4? Note II? One X? It was even more pathetic competition for the 4 series. Now we have Note8, S8, V30, U11, Pixel 2 XL, OnePlus 5. It's like if you can't buy an iPhone X, a $200-$400 Android smartphone would be more than enough to keep you happy.

Smartphone boon barely started happening at the turn of the decade. Now it becomes even more difficult to impress us compared to 5-7 years ago when iPhone's competition was still immature in software and hardware. Most of these phones are disposal anyway.

Most of what locks us down are the apps, software, and our service provider. A smartphone is just a pretty paperweight without them. The most innovative thing Apple created the last 20 years wasn't really the iPod, iPhone, or iPad. It was iTunes and the App Store. That's what locked people down into their ecosystem.

I believe that part of that success back then was that there wasn't the amount of leaks that ruins any surprise for iPhone owners nowadays. Today, we already know what's coming.

I was initially very excited with the iPhone X announcement even telling people it will be spelled with the X but be pronounced as Ten. I followed the rumors for 18 months before 7 was ever released.

I already had an SE and wanted complete it with X. It was similar to when I first saw the Nintendo Switch trailer about a year ago. I was in awe initially...

Then I realized it is like buying the most recent Madden or NBA 2K game. Same exact stuff with a fresh new coat of paint and minor improvements here and there. Apple and Nintendo are also guilty of improved variants as time passes.

There is still some uncertainty with the X like Apple being stingy with RAM when iOS11 was really built for the iPad Pro w/ 4gb, the distracting notch, and the head and neck gymnastics using Face ID which is even more disruptive than a simple fingerprint.

The design isn't even that amazing to begin with. Note8 and V30 still look nicer. I prefer silver X by far thanks to less smudges and chrome edges but even that camera hump sticks out like a sore thumb. You can argue the more proven but now stale 8 (6sss) design looks better.

It will sell like crazy initially because many people need an upgrade or will scalp it. This is the Xbox 360/PS3 of this decade for eBay sellers. But the novelty can wear off just as fast like creating Animojis doo-doo and AR games that caters to preteens.

Demand after 24 hours is going to really drop off when people see they blowout date. You really want to wait 8-12 weeks?
When they see the date continue to slip, yes. I suspect people will continue to jump on it, out of fear of getting an even later date.

This year wasnt any different. people just seem to forget about previous years or weren't around to be involved in it.

I haven't seen a highly anticipated iPhone launch since the 5 or perhaps since the 4. Twelve years ago, Xbox 360 was all the rage. This was the birth of eBay scalpers which made the PS3 launch a year after chaotic because many people in line were getting a $600 console to flip on eBay.

Nowadays not many hyped when the Xbox One or PS4 were first released back in 2013 or the One X this year. People change. Launch day excitement for consoles are dead. I read an article that even Black Friday has gotten worse too. It's really just a waste of time to fight over a material thing that will be around for years and cheaper by then.

Every new design will get tiresome eventually especially when we are aware Apple can use the same look for 3-4 generations with added refinements. I guess we will see if the hype is real the closer we get to November 3. I expect sellouts for preorders for sure.

Perhaps some of the quietness is because potential buyers are worried about the new features and already content with what they have. Wait and see approach until all the reviews are in. And perhaps that price is too hard to swallow..

Listen, most people saying we can't afford it is probably 14-years old and lets their parents buy it for them. If we can afford a car or house, we can definitely afford an overpriced phone if we wanted it. All about our priorities. Hmm.. Another phone I don't really "need" or a vacation in Japan?

X will sellout better than the Nintendo Switch did earlier this year. I just believe like what happened to Black Friday the last two years with lesser participants, hedonism wore off on many buyers years ago. Go get the X and tell us how you love it or blah blah blah. Wash, rinse, repeat.

Remember you have 14 days to return them.

If anyone that could get 10 for launch day delivery declined to do so, they'd be silly (or rich... or both). It's essentially printing money. The odds of needing to return them are minimal, but even if you do, the only thing you're out is the time it takes to do so.

Any other investment you know of that has zero downside risk and upside potential of tripling your money in a week or so?

Even if you only make $200 each (which would be REALLY low), it's an easy $2K. Granted I would agree the effort involved in selling would probably only make it "worth" about half that to most people with jobs... Here's to hoping they hit $3000 on launch day. They certainly could!
